Lodge-hopping... from the Pacific Northwest to an African Savannah: A July 2009 TR!

Last week we returned from our summer Disney fix so it’s time again for another monster trip report!! This one is sure to dwarf my previous reports in sheer size alone considering it was a 9 night/10 day stay at WDW and all our past trips have ranged from 3-5 night stays. I must say it’s a bit daunting, but I took detailed notes and am ready to relive our adventures (and possibly bore you with all the details)!!

The cast includes myself, Holly; the birthday boy, Brett; his parents, Kathy and Danny; and brother, Derek. Here’s one of the few pictures I have of us all from our December 2008 trip:

The planning stages of this trip went through many variations. So let’s start at the beginning… ever since the “Celebrate” theme was released I wanted to plan a trip for Brett’s birthday. We started putting it into action sometime in early April and not long after we settled on dates and made reservations, Brett’s parents invited us to join them on their summer trip to the Wilderness Lodge Villas. It just so happened to be close to the dates we were already looking at, so we talked about it and decided if we budgeted right we could do a super trip. Woohoo for super trips :sohappy:.

We changed our dates slightly to line up with theirs, and then I cancelled our ADRs and made some new ones. Since we were on a budget we decided a value resort was a must (and we should forego signature dining)… no ifs, ands or buts about it. Or at least that’s what Brett thought… I, however, had other plans! I got it into my head that it would be so cool to surprise him with a deluxe resort so we wouldn’t, you know, be slumming when we left the WL . Once I had my mind set I practically took up a vigil waiting for the AP resort rates to be released. And when they were I snagged a pool view room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge for our four night stay! Oh yeah… and we couldn’t possibly celebrate his birthday without some wine and signature dining so I made reservations for Jiko!

To make a long story even longer, Brett called me at work one day and told me his parents had to make a slight change to their dates, which meant we would either have to do the same or lose some days of “our” trip. I was freaking out (and couldn’t tell him) because I just knew the AP rate would no longer be available… and it wasn’t. So I started calling once or twice a day, every day. I can still recite the confirmation number! I was in luck though, because after three weeks of calling the AP rate magically reappeared!!! I guess I’m sharing all this basically to say sometimes it pays to be persistent. Let me just tell you… keeping this secret nearly killed me, but it was totally worth it!

Okay, so now that we've gotten all of that out of the way… let us finally begin.

We trudged back to the car and headed to the Animal Kingdom Lodge to pick up our luggage and say our final goodbyes to the animals. The sun was coming out as we drove across property... looks like it was going to be a beautiful day! When we got there, we ran in Zawadi Marketplace quickly enough to buy an AKL pin and take a few pictures.

Trying to prolong the inevitable, we went back out to Arusha Rock to see the animals one last time. Chip and Dale didn’t want to leave either:

Once we wrangled up the chipmunks it was go-time. Soon enough we were in the car and leaving the magic behind. Reality quickly set in when we hit I-4. You know how, as much as you don’t want to leave, once you do, you just want to get home?! Well…we weren’t even on the way home yet. We actually had to stop in Charleston, SC because I had some work-related meetings to take care of the next day. So off we were to another hotel, one much less magical. Vacation officially OVER!

Reflections:

Usually I do a little section reflecting on our whole trip… not this time. I really just have two quick things to say.

First off, my most favorite thing ever about this trip was surprising Brett and celebrating his birthday with him at the World. He’s the reason Disney is so magical for me, and I loved being able to give this to him. This was hands down one of the best trip experiences we’ve ever had!

Second…. I HEART SUPER TRIPS!!! And can’t wait for the opportunity to do another one! For those of you who have stuck with me for the past month… thank you so much. I’m sorry it took me so long!

Countdown to a Disney Christmas: 105 sleeps. Woohoo!

Thanks for sharing your SUPER TRIP-I enjoyed every minute of it! Your pics are great. The two of you make an adorable couple. I can't wait to see your scrapbook pages with them (I lurk around over there) because they are always great as well. Your birthday surprise was awesome! Part of me has always wished to have a WDW surprise trip but the control freak in me says "ARE YOU CRAZY??? GO ON A TRIP I'M NOT READY FOR???? WITH ABSOLUTELY NOTHING PLANNED???? AND WORST OF ALL - MY HUSBAND PICKING OUT WHAT HE THINKS I WOULD WEAR FOR THE WHOLE WEEK????AAAAAGGGGHHHH! NO WAY!" But...a secret upgrade like you did.....PERFECT! I think we will keep our next trip a surprise from our son (almost 5 now). It sounds so fun! I also think we will have to take pics like your Chip and Dale pics with whoever he takes (Mickey or Figment probably). That is such a cute idea. Glad you had a fun and safe trip!

“I’m late! I’m late! For a very important date. No time to say ‘Hello.’ Goodbye. I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!”

First off, Brian (my youngest, 11 years old) was sitting here with me looking at your last day pics. He took one look at this picture and said basically the same thing I was thinking right when I was thinking it but in his own words: "Uh...that Alice is a dude."

Your trip report was awesome from start to finish as always. I love that you're counting sleeps again. And how stinkin' awesome is it that you are going back to da' World *and* doing another report before me?! Yaaaayyyy!!!! :sohappy: "Super Trips" rock. Our 1st family trip in 2004 was 7 nights with every trip since being no less than 9 nights. It's never enough, tho. I hope you guys get to do lots more long trips. I love 'em!

Thanks for taking us on the adventure with you. I'll be counting the sleeps until next time!

loved the TR! thankyou for taking the time to write it!!!

You're welcome... thank you for sticking with me through the whole thing!

Thank you, clee687, for all the nice things you said about the report and Brett and I! You should totally come out of lurkdom and post with us in the scrapbook thread... I promise, we don't bite! I, too, would have lots-o-trouble giving up the OCD planner in myself and letting someone else plan it ALL. Being the planner and keeper of surprises though... perfect for our type! :D I love the idea of surprising your son and can't wait to surprise my kids one day.

First off, Brian (my youngest, 11 years old) was sitting here with me looking at your last day pics. He took one look at this picture and said basically the same thing I was thinking right when I was thinking it but in his own words: "Uh...that Alice is a dude."

Too funny about Alice... I guess because we met her and talked to her I didn't get that impression at all. Looking back at the picture though, I see where you and Brian are coming from. I'm hoping to either turn our 5 day Christmas trip into a 7 or 8 day trip.... or... follow it up with a cruise!! Super vacations are the way to go. I'm already anxiously awaiting your AKL adventure/report.

AMAZING trip report! thank you for sharing. it really did help the time go by before my trip...which is now 18 days away! :D sounds like you all had an amazing time on your super trip. i need to go on a super trip! i keep saying i should quit my job so i have more time to go on disney vacations :ROFLOL: probably not the best idea, but i can dream, can't i?! thanks again for sharing such a great trip report.

I have to agree... stupid work keeps getting in the way for us, too! I'm glad my report helped pass the time for you... you'll certainly be there before long! You should consider writing up a report for us!! :D

Awesome report! Love the super trip!! I was so sad for Chip and Dale on your last day!

Thanks for writing it, Holly! Can't wait to see the pages!:sohappy:

Thanks, Tammy. I think I'm gonna get right on those pages now. No, really... I am. As I've been writing this I keep thinking about different ideas for pages. Only thing is, I really need to focus on the cruise ones first.

We draw the line at taking the plush to the actual parks... but I bet we'd have come back with some really fun pictures if Chip and Dale would have accompanied us on attractions! Although, I just might have to do that on a future trip: a day in the life... Hmmm.... I'm getting ideas already! I can see the report now.

Thanks, Angie. Hah... I'm so glad it's over. The dang thing took me forever this time! As for topping myself next year, I don't think it's going to happen. Last year I surprised him with a concert and reservations at one of the Top Chef cheftestants' restaurants. I thought I couldn't top that though... so who knows. I need to put my thinking cap on now!

Ahhh I had when trips are over!. But you sound like you guys had a blast....Loved every minute of it.

Thanks so much foreverbelle. I, too, hate when trips are over... the last picture in your trip report says it all.

Holly thanks so much for sharing... Have been following since day 1 and have learned so many interesting things from your report!!! Yay! I'm glad it was somewhat of a learning experience. You'll be there soon enough! My favorite time of year is fall (October to be more precise), so I am a little sad to miss out on that this year... but you're right, the holidays are simply beautiful at WDW.

Fabulous trip report, it's set me up for going to BC 3 weeks tomorrow

Woohoo... Beach Club here you come. That's actually where we're headed next, too. Thanks, sueuk!

Wait a second... I don't think I remember this scrapbook sketch you're referring to. Maybe that was before I joined you all. Hmmm.

And yay for character magic... both at the restaurants and in the form of the chipmunks.

Ooooohhh... I'm so glad to hear you're doing a marathon trip! Woohoo and you signed up for the 5K. AWESOME! So tell me, is hubby carrying a camera for character sightings or is he going all out for a great finish time?! I'd love to see pictures, I'm already sad we won't be participating ourselves. As for upgrading resorts... I would suggest at least bumping up to a moderate. Your husband will appreciate the hot tub after he runs. :D

no hubby will just be trying to finish the marathon period. LOL he thinks i am trying to kill him. but he sees this run as just a run, not a DISNEY run. i keep trying to explain it to him but well its no use. he doesn't understand why i signed him up for a disney run when i could sign him up for something a whole lot closer. (hey any excuse i get will due) hehehe

and yeah i signed myself and my son up. we have a loop over here that is 3.1 miles long and i have to say i was over the 15 min mile. lol so i have to work on this. i just hope there will be a character or two for this run. and i am practicing carrying the small camera (just in case).

i'll see if i can find that sketch, maybe it was tammy that made fun of it. tammy was that you?
