Last Minute "Relax" Trip - August 1-7

Who: Myself - Travel agent
Dh - Air Force Officer
Ds 14 - Teenage Boy
Dd 11 - Tweener girl

When: August 1st -7th – We haven’t been to Walt Disney World in almost 2 years. This past year we have lived in Rhode Island and our vacations here were spent on Disney cruises. :sohappy: We were in different parts of California for three years before that and we spent most of our vacation time there at Disneyland. So it’s been too long!!

Why: Well because it’s Disney of course. Also, we were moving from Newport, Rhode Island to Colorado Springs, Colorado this summer, and had some extra time. The Air Force has created a yearly tradition of moving us every summer. Dh has been having a harder time scheduling leave in recent years, and about 4 weeks before we were supposed to leave, when they told us they didn’t need us as early as expected in Colorado, we took advantage of our extra time. We also took advantage of our DVC points and the military salute program for tickets.

We have generally avoided Disney World like the plague during the summer crowds and heat, but hey, this was an unexpected opportunity, and we wanted to take advantage. We committed ourselves to a relaxing trip, we weren’t going to see everything and weren’t going to try. We wanted to enjoy our villa, and we wanted to take breaks. We knew we’d be back, we bought DVC on our last trip 22 months ago. We could catch the things we missed on our next trip. So that was our motto for the week. No commando style touring, this was the “Relax Trip”. (We also wore undergarments, in case something different came to mind when I said, “commando style”:D).

We called DVC to see what they had, and they only had Saratoga Springs left. We’ve never stayed there, so that was fine, but we waitlisted a one bedroom at Boardwalk, just in case. About 2 weeks later, our waitlist came through, Woo hoo!! We picked up our tickets on base, and we were set!

July 31st – Friday
Today was moving day. Well actually the whole week was full of movers, cleaning the house, saying goodbye to friends, etc., but today we actually left town. Dh finished at 1:30 so we were off. 5 days of driving doesn’t seem quite as bad when there’s a trip to Disney in the middle of it.

Unfortunately, leaving Rhode Island at 1:30 puts you in the biggest city in America during rush hour. On a Friday night. In the summer. In a rain storm. We tried to go around New York City, but it still took 11 hours to go less than 500 miles. Our first test for the “Relax Trip”, and we weren’t even at Disney!! We pulled into a Homewood Suites in Fredericksburg, VA at about 1:00 in the morning. I love Homewood Suites, I have never been disappointed in one. If you’ve never stayed in one, give them a try. All suites, hot breakfast in the morning, awesome.

August 1st – Saturday
We got the kids up after only about 6 hours of sleep, but hey, we were going to Disney and everyone was happy. We ate breakfast, and got back in the car. All this time in the car led me to try something new - scrapbooking in the car!! I’ve been dabbling in digital scrapbooking for my last trip, (Disney Cruise in May), and I’ve really enjoyed it. I downloaded a ton of elements before we left, and passed time in the car by scrapbooking. I made several pages. It was great! If you want to see some, come join us in the scrapbooking forum on wdwmagic. You’ll see a great collection of talent on this board.

Lunchtime was something I’d been anticipating for many days. We were finally, after a 4 year drought, back in the land of Chick Fil A!!!!! Hallelujah!! I had missed it so!! We found one for lunch. Best. Fast. Food. Ever.

We stopped later to fill up at South of the Border in South Carolina. There was a sign saying there was a great white shark next door. I wanted to go see, but dh was antsy. He reminded us that every minute we wasted was a minute not in Disney World. Okay. We were sold.

We had originally planned to spend another night on the road close to Orlando, but once we realized we could make it, we made reservations at Pop. I’ve stayed there before, dh has not, so it was fun showing him around. We arrived at 8:30, checked in (online check in was awesome) and then wandered around.

When we reached our room, we had a magical moments certificate!! We were the housekeeping family of the day!! Woo hoo!! We got a refrigerator magnet and this awesome little souvenir:

We were planning on an early morning, so we went to bed around 10:00. The real pictures tomorrow.:)

August 6th – Thursday

Today was our last day. Sadness. When we came out of the stairwell near our room, we noticed we just missed a boat. We decided we could probably beat it to the Swan, so we hoofed it over there and caught it. We were there at opening. :sohappy:

I warned everyone how long the line for Fastpasses would get at Toy Story, so we gave ds our tickets and he weaved his way through the crowd when they released us. He weaved well, and was one of the first people there. When we arrived, the Fastpass line was already back to Little Mermaid. We were excited when we saw him about 4 people back from one of the machines. We were sad, however, when we go to the front and saw that his machine was broken. We stood and waited as patiently as we could while they fixed it, and people flooded in the line. Then the person in front of ds got 23 (!) Fastpasses!! Good grief!! Finally he was out of line, and we all got in the then 40 minute standby line. Crazy.

When we got out, we did the Backlot Tours, then we got some frozen cokes and popcorn while we waited for our Fastpass time. We rode TSM one last time, and agreed we could have ridden it multiple more times and not been tired of it.

Afterwards we started walking towards Indy. I went to Fastpass Star Tours, while they went to get seats. When I turned around they were behind me, Indy was full. We decided to get lunch at the commissary. Actually, I took ds to Pizza Planet, grabbed him a pizza and then we met dh and dd at the commissary.

Dh decided to go back to the room to pack and gas up the car after lunch. We stayed to watch American Idol one more time, our favorite didn’t win:cry:, still enjoyed it though. The kids rode Star Tours while I waited. Afterwards, we shopped a little and then went back to the room.

We packed while the kids went to the ESPN club arcade, and to the candy store to spend the rest of our snack credits (minus enough for us to use that night). They came back with arms full of giant lollipops and rice crispy treats.

After we finished we walked to Epcot for the last time.

We wanted the boys to try Kim Possible, so we got a time right when we went in. On our way in we stopped to watch the French performers. Those chairs are so high!! I almost can’t even stand to watch.

DisneyDay5033.jpg

This time our Kim Possible mission was in China. Dh and ds were as impressed as we were. The ending to this mission was just wonderful. We all were so suprised, we were cracking up.

We ate dinner in Mexico tonight. We had churros to spare.

DisneyDay5046.jpg

Dd had been asking to do the Universe of Engery so we went there and caught the last show of the evening. Afterwards we went to visit Figment.

There was a beautiful sunset when we headed back to the World Showcase. I tried to wait for a monorail, but to no avail. Next time!!

We went back to the soft serve ice cream stand for our last snack, and walked around to find a spot for Illuminations. We found a decent spot for viewing, although not a good spot for pictures, so we just enjoyed it.

We walked back to our room, the long way around the Boardwalk. At one point, I did think it was possible my feet would fall off before we got there.
We climbed into bed, exhausted. I snapped a couple of pictures from our bed. Oh how I would miss this Villa, but it was a great relaxing trip. We saw more than I ever dreamed we would with summer crowds, and afternoon breaks.

I shot this from my bed:

August 7th – Friday
We had to get up early to finish our journey to Colorado. I snapped some pics as the sun was rising. Here's my favorite:

I don't think the profile pic had humidity hair at all! It's really beautiful! But I suppose your new one is better anyway!

Yay for your last day! Lovely pics as always! I love the early morning sunrise one! Did you use a tripod for that one? It looks so crisp! I've been debating whether or not I want to lug a tripod around this time.

So that's how you got the whole thing done so fast! I should take a lesson. You managed to finish before Jenn's trip... I can't say I'll be doing the same so don't hold your breath, Jenn!

Great report, as always, Tammy! :sohappy: Love the "weaving" ds did to get to TSMM, it's just too bad it didn't pay off.

Am I the only one that thinks about new profile pictures whenever I see a picture of myself?

Ooh, wavy frizzy humidity hair. Uh uh!!! Good thing for the ball this weekend so I could get another picture!!

I did use a tripod for that one. That was from my balcony, so no lugging it around! The Epcot night ones were all handheld. I kept meaning to carry my tripod to the Beach Club to take some pictures in the other direction, but I never got around to it. Next time!!:D

Yes! I had it all written by the time we finished our eternal drive across the country. I just had to take a little time to process the pictures once we got here, or I would have put it all up immediately!:)

Wow! I've enjoyed your trip report so much. We need to adopt your trip theme for our next journey. Each time we go there's always some reason we're trying to do as much as humanly possible which results in oober-intense commando-style touring. Our goal for January is to slow down, seek out stuff we usually pass up, and relax. My poor DH needs it. He's high-strung enough without me making it worse running him to death. LOL!

I just had to comment on your comment sweetpea!! This paragraph sounds exactly like what I'd say-LOL Dh also works way too hard. I guess that is why I let him drink all he wants at World Showcase-lol

Well there are much worse ways to spend your drive time! :) Have a safe trip! Trip report was awesome, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Good luck at DH's new duty station!

Then it was time for Toy Story! That, my friends, is an excellent ride. It definitely lived up to the hype. The kids loved it, and wanted to go right back on. There was a 90 minute wait, so that was a no go. As a side note, this is one ride that would benefit from a single rider’s line. There were so many cars going out with empty seats, it was a bit painful to watch.

Tammy,

Funny you should say that because it opened with a single rider line and had one I want to say for the first few months. It was great, but at times the single rider line would be up to an hour because of the abuse (not really abuse but everyone thought it would be faster) then they would get guest concerns about how long the line was and when one weighed out the other, they did away with it.

Love your trip report!!!!
