Last Minute "Relax" Trip - August 1-7

Who: Myself - Travel agent
Dh - Air Force Officer
Ds 14 - Teenage Boy
Dd 11 - Tweener girl

When: August 1st -7th – We haven’t been to Walt Disney World in almost 2 years. This past year we have lived in Rhode Island and our vacations here were spent on Disney cruises. :sohappy: We were in different parts of California for three years before that and we spent most of our vacation time there at Disneyland. So it’s been too long!!

Why: Well because it’s Disney of course. Also, we were moving from Newport, Rhode Island to Colorado Springs, Colorado this summer, and had some extra time. The Air Force has created a yearly tradition of moving us every summer. Dh has been having a harder time scheduling leave in recent years, and about 4 weeks before we were supposed to leave, when they told us they didn’t need us as early as expected in Colorado, we took advantage of our extra time. We also took advantage of our DVC points and the military salute program for tickets.

We have generally avoided Disney World like the plague during the summer crowds and heat, but hey, this was an unexpected opportunity, and we wanted to take advantage. We committed ourselves to a relaxing trip, we weren’t going to see everything and weren’t going to try. We wanted to enjoy our villa, and we wanted to take breaks. We knew we’d be back, we bought DVC on our last trip 22 months ago. We could catch the things we missed on our next trip. So that was our motto for the week. No commando style touring, this was the “Relax Trip”. (We also wore undergarments, in case something different came to mind when I said, “commando style”:D).

We called DVC to see what they had, and they only had Saratoga Springs left. We’ve never stayed there, so that was fine, but we waitlisted a one bedroom at Boardwalk, just in case. About 2 weeks later, our waitlist came through, Woo hoo!! We picked up our tickets on base, and we were set!

July 31st – Friday
Today was moving day. Well actually the whole week was full of movers, cleaning the house, saying goodbye to friends, etc., but today we actually left town. Dh finished at 1:30 so we were off. 5 days of driving doesn’t seem quite as bad when there’s a trip to Disney in the middle of it.

Unfortunately, leaving Rhode Island at 1:30 puts you in the biggest city in America during rush hour. On a Friday night. In the summer. In a rain storm. We tried to go around New York City, but it still took 11 hours to go less than 500 miles. Our first test for the “Relax Trip”, and we weren’t even at Disney!! We pulled into a Homewood Suites in Fredericksburg, VA at about 1:00 in the morning. I love Homewood Suites, I have never been disappointed in one. If you’ve never stayed in one, give them a try. All suites, hot breakfast in the morning, awesome.

August 1st – Saturday
We got the kids up after only about 6 hours of sleep, but hey, we were going to Disney and everyone was happy. We ate breakfast, and got back in the car. All this time in the car led me to try something new - scrapbooking in the car!! I’ve been dabbling in digital scrapbooking for my last trip, (Disney Cruise in May), and I’ve really enjoyed it. I downloaded a ton of elements before we left, and passed time in the car by scrapbooking. I made several pages. It was great! If you want to see some, come join us in the scrapbooking forum on wdwmagic. You’ll see a great collection of talent on this board.

Lunchtime was something I’d been anticipating for many days. We were finally, after a 4 year drought, back in the land of Chick Fil A!!!!! Hallelujah!! I had missed it so!! We found one for lunch. Best. Fast. Food. Ever.

We stopped later to fill up at South of the Border in South Carolina. There was a sign saying there was a great white shark next door. I wanted to go see, but dh was antsy. He reminded us that every minute we wasted was a minute not in Disney World. Okay. We were sold.

We had originally planned to spend another night on the road close to Orlando, but once we realized we could make it, we made reservations at Pop. I’ve stayed there before, dh has not, so it was fun showing him around. We arrived at 8:30, checked in (online check in was awesome) and then wandered around.

When we reached our room, we had a magical moments certificate!! We were the housekeeping family of the day!! Woo hoo!! We got a refrigerator magnet and this awesome little souvenir:

We were planning on an early morning, so we went to bed around 10:00. The real pictures tomorrow.:)

Great TR so far! That's great you all were family of the day at the Pop Century, what a nice surprise.

I love your comment about Chick-Fil-A it is the best fast food ever. :)

I am so glad I'm not alone in my love of Chick Fil A!!

Am I the only one who hasn't heard of this Chick-fil-A? Apparantly it's awesome though!

I know eagles is happy with your words, but I think I need more pictures! :lookaroun :p

How exciting to check in and already get a little piece of the magic! I'm waiting to hear more! :sohappy:

Oh, and you mentioned that if we wanted to see your pages you scrapped on the trip we should check out the scrapbooking section. Have you posted those pages? :lookaroun

More pictures are coming!!

You Minnesotans are as deprived as Rhode Islanders!!

I haven't had internet, remember!! I will post pages soon!

Silly me, I already went looking for them!! Tammy must have something better to do, you know, like move into a new house or something. Excuses, excuses. :D

Off topic: you definitely need to find yourself a Chick-fil-A ASAP. We've got plenty to spare in our area, considering the chain originated right down the road in Atlanta.

See above.:D

We stopped later to fill up at South of the Border in South Carolina. There was a sign saying there was a great white shark next door. I wanted to go see, but dh was antsy. He reminded us that every minute we wasted was a minute not in Disney World. Okay. We were sold.

Hahaha that is so something Id be yelling to everyone...

You and my hubby would get along, blackthidot!:)

The things I take advantage of living in the South.

I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of your TR!

The South! Home of Chick Fil A!!:sohappy: Thank you, popsicletrees.

We're all busy...there are no good excuses.

I guess that's why I'd never heard of them. Not many of them up here in Minnesota. When I find myself near one, I guess I'll have to check it out. I'm guessing there is chicken there. Is it kind of like a KFC?

Bad excuse, good excuse - I still have to use it!

Great start to the report Tammy!!! Geese, I can not believe how quick the time flew by since your cruise report!! Feels like just yesterday! Can't wait till the next installment!

It wasn't long ago! My hubby keeps reminding me how lucky I am.

Nope... so much better than KFC. They do chicken sandwiches, breaded and grilled, along with other things like chicken strips and such. I thought of you this weekend as I gobbled up my chicken sandwich and waffle fries! I remember saying to Brett "Can you believe they don't have Chick-fil-A's in Minnesota?!"

Tammy, it's Tuesday! Is your internet working yet?!

Holly summed it up well. There is nothing bad. Their chicken mini's for breakfast are the best!!

And yes. Yes it is.:D

I'm glad you were thinking of me when you were eating your delicious chicken dinner!

And, silly me, when I saw this thread as new I thought yay!!! Tammy has gotten more of her trip report done! Once again I was dissappointed.

It's coming!! Mercy!!

Hmmm... maybe you should start writing trip reports so you can feel our pain! :D  I'll be looking for it the week after next.

Word. Holly.

Just popping in so I can get the rest of the TR!

Thank you nibbles!!

You may be waiting awhile with the rest of us.... :lookaroun:lol:

I'm just teasing you, Tammy!

Well, I'm in it for the long haul!

Okay, after a much ballyhooed delay - August 2nd – Sunday:sohappy:

Today we got to check in to Boardwalk! We had to go over before we went to the parks to get our keys with the dining plan on them. We decided to try the quick service plan this time. We were trying to make this trip fairly inexpensive because it was so last minute. DVC and the military salute helped immensely, so we decided even though the regular dining plan wasn’t much more, once we included tips, it was a decent difference. Having two kids over 9 now, makes a big difference too. We really liked the counter service plan. We definitely saved money, and we had plenty of food. The hardest thing to use was snack credits. I was a firm believer that if I had two snack credits a day, I was getting two Mickey bars a day. :D Unfortunately with all the desserts that were included with our meals, it was hard to be hungry enough for Mickey bars!! Sadness. In a not a bad problem to have kind of way.

We woke up at 7 again, got ready, and then got to Boardwalk around 7:45.

Great news, our room was ready!! We were staying in a one bedroom (our first time to use our DVC points at Disney) with a Boardwalk view. The kids and I went to drop some stuff off, and dh went to get the bags.

I cannot tell you how much we loved our room. I had seen the floorplans and I thought I knew what to expect, but it was just wonderful. It was so spacious. Pictures won’t do it justice. There was just so much room to relax (our word for the week!!) and spread out!!

See, spreading out:

DisneyWorldDay1098.jpg

I somehow neglected to take a picture of the huge tub and bathrooms. Seriously the split bathroom was bigger than some hotel rooms I've stayed in.

The view off the balconies, was amazing. I love the Boardwalk. I love the atmosphere, the lights, everything. I’m so glad we got to stay there.

Our view from our balcony:

Panorama2.jpg

I definitely have said in the past, “I don’t care about my room, I’m not going to spend much time there.” Well, here’s the rub. When your room is that nice, you want to spend time there. A lot of time!! It’s not like coming back to a room with two beds and nothing else, where everyone has to sit or lay on a bed and watch the same thing on TV. When you have all this space, we could sit on couches and chairs, watch two TV’s, surf the internet to catch up, get cold drinks from the fridge…Okay, that’s enough about that. We loved our room. Enough said.:D

After we loved our room, we went down to the bakery to get our refillable mugs and some breakfast. For some reason, everytime this week that we took our mugs down, they looked at the mugs, and then filled up regular cups for us. I haven’t had refillable mugs for a while, so maybe they all do that now? We just found it amusing.

Finally, we were off to our first park! We actually pulled up to the parking lot at 9:05 when the park opened at 9! Not too bad!! Not in the park at opening, but not too bad for the “Relax Trip”!

We had to activate our military tickets, and we’d decided to add park hoppers too. We haven’t gotten park hoppers our last couple of trips, we’ve always been able to make do without them. This time, since dh’s was free, and ours would only be $25 each, we thought they’d be fun.

As soon as we entered the park we went and ordered a picnic lunch for two. I knew the kids wouldn’t be too excited about the selections, so dh and I got it for ourselves. I realized as I was walking away that they had charged our key, and not deducted credits from the dining plan, so dh went back to fix it. Oops. “Relax”…:D

DisneyWorldDay1022.jpg

The kids and I walked to Everest to get Fastpasses. Silly us, we walked right by the new centralized Fastpass location Animal Kingdom is testing. Complete brain freeze. After Fastpassing we went to the Safari to meet dh. On the way, we passed Flik in his picturesque location by the tree of life, with NO line, but I couldn’t convince the kids to stop. They had been in Orlando for too long without a ride at this point.

The Safari was great as always:

Then we took a walk down the Pagani Trail.

Afterwards, we walked back to Everest and Fastpassed Kali River Rapids on the way. We rode Everest which is an awesome ride. I have to tell you though, that ride makes me nauseous!! I am good on most roller coasters, but every time I ride Everest, I get off not feeling well. Old age? Maybe. Dh felt similar and ds wanted to look at the pins and vinlymations in the shop. Dd desperately wanted to ride again, so we sent her through the single rider line. One thing I noticed while waiting for dd to get off. I was standing right by the exit and could see most people right as they get off. People LOVE that ride. People are high fiving, kids are laughing and begging to go back on, adults are saying “Wow!”, etc. It’s so fun to watch them all.

Of course it concerns me all the more that I may be getting to old to enjoy it.

I did take pictures of course:

After we got dd back, I went to pick up our lunch while dh took the kids to Pizzafari. We realized that we’d thrown away our receipt! Oops!! (His bad this time!! :D) There was no one in line, when I went up and asked if I could still get it. She was telling me know, when I pleaded with her to look, and I could describe exactly what was in the bag, which sides, desserts, etc. She smiled and went and found it. Phew!! I did not want to pay for another lunch!

I took the bag to Pizzafari where they were still in line. I sat down and unpacked our lunch. Wow! What a great deal. It was delicious, too! This began our first of many meals with way too much food.

I was also surprised to see the kids with straws!! At Animal Kingdom!! When did that happen? Man it’s been too long since I’ve been to WDW.

After lunch we went to the centralized Fastpass location and Fastpassed Dino, then we went to Kali, to try to shake some of this “melt your face off heat” as Hollybelle called it. We’ve been in Rhode Island for a year. We were wimps!

We got completely soaked on Kali. Dripping, wring your clothes out, soaked.

We strolled through the jungle trek to dry off for a while. Afterwards, dd got some delicious soft serve ice cream and we went to ride Dino.

Then we decided to go back to the room to relax and change soaked shoes. When we got in the car, dh announced he was not paying for milk at the Boardwalk, and we were – gasp – leaving the property to get some groceries!!

I was not a happy camper. I do not like to leave the property. At. All. Not. Happy.

He drove to a grocery store, bought a gallon of milk and a case of Diet Pepsi. I sulked in the car, and try to ignore the non magical things happening around me. I would go back to our motto (relax!!), once we got back on property.

Thankfully the trip, didn’t last long, and we drove back to the Boardwalk. Did I mention how nice our room was?:D

We unpacked while the kids relaxed then we all went swimming, in the “scary clown” pool, which was actually a lot of fun. The slide was great!

After changing, we took a boat to Epcot for dinner. Since this was the “relax trip” we decided to try some things in the World Showcase we haven’t tried in years. We watched both 360 movies and even the kids enjoyed them.

We ate in China, and watched the acrobats for a while.

When we circled back to the World Showcase entrance, we walked back to our room. We passed lots of street entertainment which dh and ds stopped to enjoy. I wanted to get back to the room and get the camera set up for Illuminations.

After that we did something crazy. The kids and I went to Magic Kingdom for extra magic hours. From 10 to 1!! The family that's normally too cheap to buy park hoppers went to three parks in one day!! Okay, we didn’t stay until 1, but we did go for a little while. We rode, Buzz, Pirates, and Aladdin, and shopped a little. We were tired hombres on the way home.

Wow... what a view!!! With a view like that I'm starting to think Boardwalk might have something up on the Beach Club, considering all of BCV is on the backside near the parking lot. Tell me, can you hear the musical score while watching Illuminations? If you say, yes, I'm sold!

I have a feeling you won't be able to go back now that you've "park hopped." It just gives you so much freedom both when planning and when you want to throw those plans out the window.

And I'm with you 100% on the non magical-ness of any and everything off property. I absolutely hate it!

As always, your pictures are fabulous. Can't wait for more! :sohappy:

Love those night time pics!!!!!

Thank you! It was so nice to set up my tripod on the balcony and not worry about being in anyone's way!

Thanks for sharing your trip!
BEAUTIFUL pictures.
Everest makes me queasy afterwards sometimes too :)

Good, I'm not alone.:)

We could not hear the music. We had to guess at which parts it was on. At Disneyland you can pipe the music into your room through a dedicated TV channel. Boardwalk should do that!

I did thoroughly enjoy the park hopping. We probably will do it again next time.

Thanks, Holly!

If they don't have the self serve for the drinks, they have to hand you a clean cup for health reasons. They can't give you back a cup that you have touched, if you spill a little out of a normal cup and ask for it to be topped off they are supposed to throw out that old cup and give you a new one. Good health = bad for the planet?!?!?

I was also surprised to see the kids with straws!! At Animal Kingdom!! When did that happen? Man it’s been too long since I’ve been to WDW.

They are paper straws, zoos and AK started getting them a couple of years ago. They are not harmful to the animals at all, but they only last a short amount of time before they start to turn into pulp in your drink.

Great pics and loving the update!!!
