Last Minute "Relax" Trip - August 1-7

Who: Myself - Travel agent
Dh - Air Force Officer
Ds 14 - Teenage Boy
Dd 11 - Tweener girl

When: August 1st -7th – We haven’t been to Walt Disney World in almost 2 years. This past year we have lived in Rhode Island and our vacations here were spent on Disney cruises. :sohappy: We were in different parts of California for three years before that and we spent most of our vacation time there at Disneyland. So it’s been too long!!

Why: Well because it’s Disney of course. Also, we were moving from Newport, Rhode Island to Colorado Springs, Colorado this summer, and had some extra time. The Air Force has created a yearly tradition of moving us every summer. Dh has been having a harder time scheduling leave in recent years, and about 4 weeks before we were supposed to leave, when they told us they didn’t need us as early as expected in Colorado, we took advantage of our extra time. We also took advantage of our DVC points and the military salute program for tickets.

We have generally avoided Disney World like the plague during the summer crowds and heat, but hey, this was an unexpected opportunity, and we wanted to take advantage. We committed ourselves to a relaxing trip, we weren’t going to see everything and weren’t going to try. We wanted to enjoy our villa, and we wanted to take breaks. We knew we’d be back, we bought DVC on our last trip 22 months ago. We could catch the things we missed on our next trip. So that was our motto for the week. No commando style touring, this was the “Relax Trip”. (We also wore undergarments, in case something different came to mind when I said, “commando style”:D).

We called DVC to see what they had, and they only had Saratoga Springs left. We’ve never stayed there, so that was fine, but we waitlisted a one bedroom at Boardwalk, just in case. About 2 weeks later, our waitlist came through, Woo hoo!! We picked up our tickets on base, and we were set!

July 31st – Friday
Today was moving day. Well actually the whole week was full of movers, cleaning the house, saying goodbye to friends, etc., but today we actually left town. Dh finished at 1:30 so we were off. 5 days of driving doesn’t seem quite as bad when there’s a trip to Disney in the middle of it.

Unfortunately, leaving Rhode Island at 1:30 puts you in the biggest city in America during rush hour. On a Friday night. In the summer. In a rain storm. We tried to go around New York City, but it still took 11 hours to go less than 500 miles. Our first test for the “Relax Trip”, and we weren’t even at Disney!! We pulled into a Homewood Suites in Fredericksburg, VA at about 1:00 in the morning. I love Homewood Suites, I have never been disappointed in one. If you’ve never stayed in one, give them a try. All suites, hot breakfast in the morning, awesome.

August 1st – Saturday
We got the kids up after only about 6 hours of sleep, but hey, we were going to Disney and everyone was happy. We ate breakfast, and got back in the car. All this time in the car led me to try something new - scrapbooking in the car!! I’ve been dabbling in digital scrapbooking for my last trip, (Disney Cruise in May), and I’ve really enjoyed it. I downloaded a ton of elements before we left, and passed time in the car by scrapbooking. I made several pages. It was great! If you want to see some, come join us in the scrapbooking forum on wdwmagic. You’ll see a great collection of talent on this board.

Lunchtime was something I’d been anticipating for many days. We were finally, after a 4 year drought, back in the land of Chick Fil A!!!!! Hallelujah!! I had missed it so!! We found one for lunch. Best. Fast. Food. Ever.

We stopped later to fill up at South of the Border in South Carolina. There was a sign saying there was a great white shark next door. I wanted to go see, but dh was antsy. He reminded us that every minute we wasted was a minute not in Disney World. Okay. We were sold.

We had originally planned to spend another night on the road close to Orlando, but once we realized we could make it, we made reservations at Pop. I’ve stayed there before, dh has not, so it was fun showing him around. We arrived at 8:30, checked in (online check in was awesome) and then wandered around.

When we reached our room, we had a magical moments certificate!! We were the housekeeping family of the day!! Woo hoo!! We got a refrigerator magnet and this awesome little souvenir:

We were planning on an early morning, so we went to bed around 10:00. The real pictures tomorrow.:)

BLT is just gorgeous. We didn’t realize that some people were able to go up to the lounge that first day, so we didn’t ask, we just walked around. The pool was empty:

A few months ago, we bought enough BLT points to get a one bedroom Magic Kingdom view room every couple of years, and I cannot wait to use them!!

We went in the store after we walked around and the kids looked at all the pins and vinylmations. We didn’t see any BLT pins, but we weren’t surprised by that. Luckily ds asked before we left, and what do you know, she pulled out a small bag of them! We showed our member cards and bought two. Way cool. Those pins are selling for $80 each on ebay right now!!

They also had a plain white vinlymation there that was covered in character autographs. Dd absolutely loved that idea. I convinced her to wait until our next trip, because I thought it was too late in this trip to try to get a bunch of autographs. I would have loved it at the beginning, when I was begging the kids to stop for characters!! Although, I have since read that the characters aren't signing them right now.

We ate dinner at the Contempo Café, it was great.

We decided to end this night at Downtown Disney. We caught a bus there and wandered around. I saw some great artwork I’d like to get one day, and the kids bought pins and vinylmations. Did I mention they love those things?

Thanks, Jenn!

We'll only get to stay there every couple of years in a Magic Kingdom view, but I can't wait!!

August 5th – Wednesday

Today we went a little crazy with the whole “Relax” theme and decided to - gasp again – sleep in!! Wow, that goes against every efficient touring plan bone in my body. I have to admit, it was kind of nice though. The kids slept until 9, and we left by 9:30. Not too bad, actually.

Random lobby picture:

DisneyDay3080_filtered.jpg

We caught a bus to Magic Kingdom.

DisneyDay4002.jpg

We went straight to Buzz, got Fastpasses and rode it. Afterwards we did Stitch and the Laugh Floor. I wasn’t crazy about the Laugh Floor last time we were at WDW, but this time, it was quite funny. We rode Buzz again, and left Tomorrowland. We walked by Philharmagic which had no wait, and caught a show. Then we went to ride It’s a Small World. I convinced ds to ride it because it had been redone with some characters. Oops. My bad. That was Disneyland.

We ate lunch at Pinocchios. They had a meatball sub that was yum-my. After lunch we went to Fastpass Splash, and then we went to the Hall of Presidents. I’ll admit, there’s about 50 other things I’d rather do at Magic Kingdom:lookaroun, but I wanted to see Obama, our kids had never been to see it, and this was the “Relax” vacation. It was great. I’m not saying I’ll go back again for 4-8 years, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I even got a little teary once.

We rode Haunted Mansion next.

After we got off another one of those torrential downpours had started. We weren’t planning on leaving for a while so I decided to buy some ponchos. We ducked into the tiny store next to HM and I got in line. The store filled with people, as did the covered walkway outside it. Once we had our ponchos we made our way to Splash which was – closed. So was Big Thunder. We Fastpassed Big Thunder and got some snacks – Dole Whip Floats.:sohappy:

DisneyDay4007.jpg

DisneyDay4b015.jpg

We ended up going back to the room for a break. We took the monorail to Epcot and walked all the way through and back to the room. Walking off all those desserts, I guess.

DisneyDay4b018.jpg

After I checked my emails I went swimming with the kids, then dh and ds went to play ping pong in the community hall.

After we showered and changed, we headed out for Magic Kingdom. We had excellent luck with the busses all week until now. When we sat down, a bus for Downtown Disney and Typhoon Lagoon pulled up. It pulled out and 2 minutes later another bus for DD and TL pulled up. I thought, wow that’s strange, until 2 minutes later – another one!! When the 4th bus to DD and TL pulled up in a span of 9 minutes, we were all cracking up. What on earth?

Finally, a Magic Kingdom bus, and we were off. We ate dinner at the Noodle Company. It was delicious! And the best news – they had Mickey Bars for dessert! Perfect!! :sohappy: We walked over to Buzz since we were in the area. When we got on, we saw a camera and camera crew get on 2 cars ahead of us. We also overheard a cast member talking about the Jonas Brothers being on the ride.

Shut up!!

I admit it, I love the Jonas Brothers!! :lookaroun When we got off we saw some director’s chairs and makeup people set up to the side and behind Buzz. We (dd, ds and I, dh had no part in this one) sat down for a few minutes to see if we could catch a glimpse of them, but no luck. There was no Jo bro sighting.

We finally went and used our Splash and Big Thunder Fastpasses and then found a place to watch the parade. Well, we tried to find a place. It was pretty sad.

DisneyDay4c005_filtered.jpg

DisneyDay4b024.jpg

Afterwards we tried to relocate to a better place for Wishes. It’s been too long. We chose a horrible place. I had my tripod and everything. The fireworks were off to our left and behind a tree. :hammer: Sadness. Oh well – Relax! Next trip. We were expecting a huge line for the bus, but it wasn’t bad at all!

Back to bed. Last day tomorrow!

You almost got your trip report done before I leave! Pretty amazing! :sohappy:

It's so funny that you said you like the Jonas brothers. The kids mercilessly tease me about them. I'm not sure where they got the idea, I think it was when we were watching the Christmas parade and they were on it. I must have said that one of them was cute to tease one of the girls, and they never forgot it. Even Sam will say whenever they come on tv, oh, Jenn, there's the J-O-N-A-S brothers. I'm hoping once they are all legal all this teasing may stop. :lookaroun:lol:

Wow! I've enjoyed your trip report so much. We need to adopt your trip theme for our next journey. Each time we go there's always some reason we're trying to do as much as humanly possible which results in oober-intense commando-style touring. Our goal for January is to slow down, seek out stuff we usually pass up, and relax. My poor DH needs it. He's high-strung enough without me making it worse running him to death. LOL!

I hear ya on Expedition Everest. I try to stay in shape and all but that's one coaster I can only take once every few hours. I can't keep up with my kiddos running loops thru the lines. I generally ride once or twice at most then sit and let them go. The part that messes with my head is the backwards G's. After you zip around backwards thru the mountain my head is all goofy. The rest of the ride doesn't give it a chance to recover. I probably make it worse, too, because when the train rolls backwards thru the mountain in the dark, if I'm sitting on the left side of the train I look down to the left because you can see down thru the mountain which is pretty cool. I think that disorients me worse, tho. LOL! Mission:Space I can do only once on orange team. I love it and scream thru the whole thing. DH video'd it once just to show me how much I carry on. It's absolutely hysterical to watch.

I loooove your pics! DH mentioned over the weekend he'd like to get a good camera for Christmas to do some "real photography" as he put it. I guess I better start studying up on what's what so I know what to buy. :lookaroun

Thanks again for all the effort with the TR! I love love love it! :sohappy:

Tammy -

Great trip report - and wonderful pictures! We stayed at the Beach Club Villas for the first time the last week of July. Loved the location of BCV - but next on my list is going to have to be the Boardwalk!

Our trip was a "relax" trip as well - no detailed plans, no dining reservations (was on the quick service plan), and just did things as we wanted to even if it meant sitting pool side doing nothing! DS (13) and I also did KP visiting Norway and France. We loved it.

We went to the Hall of Presidents as well (had not seen it since probably our honeymoon in '87!) It was very well done and yes, I teary at one point as well. Our DD (who is 20) was sitting a couple seats away from me and I could hear her ask DH "Is mom crying yet?".... lol I grew up military (Dad was in the Navy for 35 years) - so anytime anything patriotic comes my way I get emotional.

Thanks Sweetpee! It was very hard for me to relax, but it was definitely worth it. I figured, if it's a once in a lifetime trip, then yes, see everything you can! But if you go back once or twice a year, then you know you'll have another chance to do everything.

There is no way I could look over the side of the car, but I would like to see that view you're talking about!

Disney has so many great opportunities for "real photography", it's part of the fun for me!:)

I will certainly try! :D

I'm so cranky right now though. You know what a terrible procrastinator I can be and now I have so much to do and I feel that I have no way to get it done before 3 am tomorrow.

You can!! And once you leave, it will all be behind you, and you'll be at Disney World!!
