I can't stand the abbreviations

While I cannot stand when people use 'u' 'r' 'ur' (that one really bugs me) I do use Disney abbreviations quite a bit.

Using WDW short hand becomes second nature over time.
Agreed. I still use proper English, but there's very little reason to write out Walt Disney World over and over when you're on a Disney board and everyone knows what WDW means.

Thank you for bringing this up, I'm glad someone else feels this way too. While we're talking about this, there is one that I keep seeing that isn't on the acronym page and I would really like to know what it means - TDO. Anyone have any idea what this stands for?

Sometimes we would use WDW short-hand when we put that name on tape labels.

What really bothers me is that people abuse the short-hand typing too much, at least online. I deliberately avoid "LOL" and always type out "by the way" rather than "BTW".

Whoops, you're right. Screwed up there. I should have just said "the wrs".

Oh, and you are obviously an abbreviator.

At the bottom of your posts:
Parks Visited: MK - EPCOT - DHS - DAK - DL - DCA - HKDL - TDL - TDS

I think that may be one of the cases where abbreviating is appropriate, because if I remember correctly, there is actually a character limit on your signature. You actually set that "signature" at the bottom of your posts so that it automatically shows up everytime you post something, and in the process of doing my signature one time, I ran into a character limit and had to find a way to shorten what I was including, without leaving anything out.

But like I said, I'm not deadset against abbreviating altogether. Usually, when posting here, I will say DHS, rather than typing out Disney's Hollywood Studios. Sometimes I'll type out Magic Kingdom or Animal Kingdom, but I often say MK and AK, too. But I definitely do think many people take abbreviating to the extreme.

Initialisms are are part of virtually every discussion board and industry. Go to a computer forum and you will see things like BSOD, FSB and OC thrown around. Start talking about the space shuttle and you will see thins like ETU, OMS and EVA. Disney is no different. There is nothing lazy about initialisms they are just part of culture of being knowledgeable about any topic. Take the time to learn the language and you won't even notice them anymore.

So who's lazy? The abbreviators who won't type out words or the newbies who won't make the effort to learn? :p

Maybe it's because I work in telecom. I think telecom is second only to the military in it's use of appreviations. We even have nested ones.

Using WDW short hand becomes second nature over time.

The whole DD, DS, DH thing annoys the hell out of me. I can pretty much decipher what people are talking about with the other abbreviations, but those just annoy me to no end.

Is it faster? Yes. But I also think it is a sign of the times. I'm surrounded by this "teen talk" crap and text language almost on a daily basis and it really is becoming too pervasive in society. One of my students I help at my alma mater actually used abbreviated words. The minute I saw that I went to his professor and he failed the kid automatically on the paper. No second chance, nothing. Why? Had I not been there to check it that paper would have reached the professor's desk.

The DD, DS, etc did not originate here, but were brought over by people who post on another forum. Most people who started their Disney posting here do not use them.

And I tend to fall in the middle. I've been posting here for a decade, so don't notice the old abbreviations, and even use some myself, such as WDW and US/IOA rather than writing them out.

I pick up most of the new ones through context, but that's easier to do if you know the majority of the old ones.

And if you think these are hard, try being in the medical field where the abbreviations are based on words that are from different languages.

Acronyms are part of our daily lives and have been for a very long time, being an old soldier maybe I’m just more accustom to them.
Totally off subject but my favorite acronym story is one I heard as a cadet at West Point.
During operation Market Garden, during the Second World War, American paratroopers fought with British infantry and armored units in Holland. A unit of paratroopers was pinned down under heavy fire and called for reinforcements. The British said they would send 2DCLI to assist. The Americans had no idea what DCLI were or how only 2 of them would help.
A short time later the 2 DCLI arrived as in 2nd battalion of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, about 900 men strong.

Word. lol

One thing to remember, like a PP(previous poster) said, many people visit other forums. I used to frequent a board for SN parents. We shorthand EVERYTHING. That's where I learned about DH, DW, DS, DD, DSS, etc.

When i first got here, I had to do alot of thinking with the Disney Abbreviations. It's like learning a new language. If I couldn't figure out what something meant, I asked or googled. Sometimes, it's just funny, like MILF (Monsters Inc Laugh Floor). Yes, sometimes it is a PITA(pain in the butt) to type things out. Sorry, it's a chat forum. I use both long hand, shorthand and abbr. I'm also military. You wanna talk about PITA abbr.! lol In the military, we don't use only the first letters. Seriously, our abbr. could be the first letter, first 3, last 3, or middle three letters. lol.

Seriously, abbr. can turn a post from a full page thing to a half page. It does make a difference. Put forth an effort to learn them. It's not difficult. Everyone has to start somewhere. Sometimes, it's simply context. In the medical world, there's an abbr ASD. now, ASD could be a heart condition or autism spectrum disorders. If someone is talking about a kid that won't shut up, it's probably autism. lol. Just like DS can also mean Down Syndrome. Use Context Clues. If someone says I got soaked on SM, well, you know it wasn't splash mountain.

And I can tell you the CMs (cast members) use abbr. HEAVILY. I have a few friends that are CMs who talk Disney to me. Sometimes they use abbr. that are different from the boards or are abbr when I wasn't abbr them. I have to ask what is that. lol.

Now, on the flipside, while I use abbr., I HATE chatspeak when it's just misspelled english. My cousin is horrible about that (she's 17). I hate u, ur, tlk, 2mrrw, etc. Seriously, that stuff started when texting was on the old Nokia phones when you had to press 7 4 times to get to "S." Most cells, now, have T9 or a full keyboard. It's not necessary anymore. I chastise people on my facebook page who do it. YOU'RE USING A FULL KEYBOARD ON A COMPUTER! lol.

Good one Monty!

Edit: But the only problem is that the "newbies" may get perturbed with not knowing all the lingo and just stop coming. I'm pretty sure that the goal of most forums is to accumulate members. Also, the more people here, the more great tips and stories.

Are there really that many Disney abbreviations to learn? Im a big fan of MILF.

As for spelling I'm sure I read somewhere that the accuracy of the spelling reflects the writers regard for the audience reading it.

I was going to say the really lazy ones are the ones who don't even bother to respond.

. . . but for that to work best, I shouldn't respond . . .

. . . but then nobody would know about what I was thinking . . .:lookaroun

. . . so you'll have to pretend this isn't actually here . . . :lookaroun

For those saying that we need to get used to it because abbreviating is now part of everyday life, well, you may be right, but I come here (like most) trying to get away from everyday life and receive a little magic.

And I totally understand that in the medical field, their abbreviations are a lot harder to learn, but here's the thing, I'm not a nurse or a doctor, and I sure as heck don't get paid to frequent this forum. If it were my job, I would probably take the time to learn it. Just my opinion.
