I’ve got a Valentine’s Date at Disney!

When – February 14-18, 2013

What – Valentine’s Day Trip

Who – Just me and the hubs!

Why – We had actually planned on going with the kids this weekend since they had a 4 day weekend. We booked it quite a while ago and then the kids ended up having all kinds of conflicts. So we cancelled and went at Thanksgiving instead! So while their lovely faces were in that trip report, this one is adult only!

Around the middle of January, Stephen remembered that his favorite soccer team, DC United, was going to be playing at Wide World of Sports over President’s Day Weekend.

He said, “Man I wish we could still go to Disney in a few weeks.”

I was like, “Um, honey? WE can still go to Disney!”

Oh yeah!!

So we bought some plane tickets, scrambled to find some places to stay on points and we were booked!

As a bonus, good friends and fellow KK agents Heather (@DisneyHeather) and Missy (@polymissy) were going to be there at the same time. And Richard (@Master Yoda) was coming up for the day on Saturday! Woo hoo! Friends everywhere! What fun this was going to be!

I was woefully neglectful on toes pictures. Missy and Heather, however, were awesome. They were texting me constant streams of toe pictures.

After we ate, we continued around to the front.

We stopped in the Art of Disney because we both love that store!

We decided to go Find Nemo next and it was a walk on. Although walking through the line takes a good 5 minutes.

When we walked out, we walked smack into Missy and family! We chatted for a while then said goodnight. We started walking back towards the room and then we ran into Heather and her family! We chatted some more and then said goodnight again!

We were going to see everyone at Animal Kingdom the next day!

It's pretty amazing to me still that in such a big park full of people we managed to run right into you guys. Disney Magic?

Where were we off to next you ask? To the Wide World of Sports to see DC United play! What’s DC United you ask? It’s our local professional soccer team! Come on! Any soccer fans out there?

Stephen is a blogger for their fan site and he got us media passes for the game. He was sitting in the press booth and I was going to be on the field taking pictures. Yay!

We walked outside Animal Kingdom and found a waiting cab to take us to the Wide World of Sports.

I’ve been on the outside looking in, but I’ve never actually been in the gates of Wide World of Sports. Man was it packed! There was a twirl championship, softball tournament, baseball, soccer, etc.! It was a zoo!

But a fun kind of zoo!

We picked up our tickets and started back towards the field.

We were seriously starving at this point. Did we even eat breakfast? I’m not really sure now that I think about it. We definitely didn’t have lunch. So after figuring out where to go, that was first on our agenda.

We grabbed some wraps and went inside the gates. It may have had something to do with the fact that I was weak from hunger, but this wrap was amazing. Stephen said it was actually kind of dry. Who noticed?

After eating Stephen made his way to the press box. They told me I could be inside the fence line of the field, just to stick near the fence.

I have had the opportunity to be down on the field once before for DC United at RFK stadium, but this field was so different. It was a little surreal to be right next to them:

The fence was actually amusing. At some point a ball hit the fence and I noticed the top of the rail flew off.

Then I looked around and noticed the tops had flown off a lot of rails!

At this point this trip report is going to devolve into a few soccer pictures. I am no soccer commentator (although I do know EVERYTHING about the game when one of my kids are playing ) so just skip ahead if soccer bores you to tears!

I soon noticed the professionals didn’t feel the need to stay anywhere near the fence, but I'm a rule follower, so I stuck to that fence like glue!

Time for some soccer! DC United is in white.

This is Chris Corb. He cracks me up! Look at his socks! Where are his shin guards? Well apparently these are the same shin guards he has worn since he was 8. And you can tell! They must be like 6 inches high!

Almost half time! We were down 1-0. The first goal was a beauty. It was a bicycle kick, but unfortunately it was on the other side of the field so I missed it.

Not being a professional sports photographer, I often find myself watching the game and forgetting to take pictures! Shoot!

At halftime we went inside the field house for a moment and it was overrun by baton twirlers! Wow!

This happened right in front of me. I could only see it from behind though and so I wasn’t sure if this was anger that was making De Rosarrio hold the other player -or fun. This "hug" went on for like 10 seconds? A long time! I decided it was just fun though.

More action:

A couple of minutes later, there almost was a throw down! And I saw what caused this one! From an unbiased fan, it was the other team’s fault.

The players were very friendly and even stopped to talk to fans after the game.

Stephen went into the locker room to catch some players and I roamed around.

The coach called a practice after the game so we watched for a little while. The coach joined in too! I texted my son and said, “I’m watching Ben Olsen play soccer. U mad bro?”

Chris Pontius stood next to us for a few minutes eating a piece of pizza. I didn’t take his picture. I wanted to! But I didn’t!

I also would have liked a picture with him, but I still had the giant lens on, so Stephen would have to stand awkwardly far away to take it.

It was great fun all in all. So glad we got to do it. I was blown away by the size of Wide World of Sports. It was just massive!

When we were walking towards the cabs, we noticed some Disney busses on their way to All Start Sports. That would work!

Soccer...not gonna lie, lost on me. Soccer reminds me of elementary school PE, the part I refused to have any part of. Running around in the hot Florida sun chasing a pack of wild kicking kids was just not my deal. I think I was the only 5th grader who got anything less than an 'A' in PE. If only I could've gotten points for style sitting in the shade. LOL! I'm not sure I could even follow a soccer game if I tried. Even knowing nothing about the game, your pics you shared were really great! Definitely some good action stuff going on.

The Pop Warner plaque was...well...interesting. Having been at WDW w/that group before I wouldn't use those words to describe the lot but it's a nice sentiment for someone to try to pitch.

Still following even if kinda on the quiet side.
