Hollywood Studios entertainment overhaul

Yuck and double yuck.

Agreed. It's a cute show, but in a few years it will be DOA and will need to be replaced . . . again.

I'm quite sorry to see Mermaid go if this is true. It was one of the better shows on property, and has some of the best music around.

Can't say the same for BATB. Saw it a few times. First time was awful, but decided to give it a few more goes just to see if it was a cast issue. Just blah all the way around. Personally, I would love to see them replace this with a show somewhat along the lines of what they have on the cruise ships - those are still Broadway style, but have much more variety. Then you can still get all your favorite songs from your favorite films wrapped up in a nice, new, more original package. And, with a little luck, they can throw "Brazzle Dazzle Day" or "Candleo n the Water" into that mix (that's a total pipe dream I know).

Or - just bring back Hunchback. That would make me happy too.

WDAS was located in the park. Not really sure where you get and idea like this.

Yes. But at the time, the park could pull the working studio aspect and the "Hollywood that never was" aspect. Both of which are long lost today.

Now the only thing holding the park together is that almost all attractions are from properties somehow owned by Disney that aren't from WDAS. Either way, Ariel and Belle should have always been in Fantasyland.

It's possible I missed it, but is there a time frame for these changes? Are we talking 2012 or 2013 sometime?

???? Timeframe???

Hollywood Studios will be receiving a major overhaul of several long running shows.

Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage will be closing in the near future to be replaced with the rumored "Tangled" show.

Voyage of the Little Mermaid will also be closing to be replaced with a new show.

The orginal post (above) said that BatB was "closing in the near future" What is the near future? End of the month? End of the year?

A nw stage show could be up and running fairly quickly after the new one is done with its run. Assuming the cast is rehearsing the new show and sets are built prior to BatB closing, the new show could start right on the heals of the closing.

VotLM, I imagine will take a bit more time to overhaul the underwater theme of the current attraction, but some of the other things (cast and sets) fit with the above model.

The real question will be when will these attractions close?

Only half of the songs in PatF are even memorable. I can honestly say everyone I knew was singing the Tangled songs when it came out but no one was singing anything from PatF. Don't get me wrong PatF is a good movie but it fell short (I blame the bayou scenes) and Tangled pretty much blew it out of the water.

I agree that as a movie Tangled is probably a little bit better, but I do not think the songs are. "I have a dream" is catchy, but very short, "Mother Knows Best" is gawdawful (as is the whole villian character herself, IMHO), "I see the light" is good but made truly amazing by the fantastic animation, and "When will my life begin" is meh.

I admit that maybe my love of PatF has a little bit to do with my love of New Orleans in general, but I REALLY like the songs from PatF probably more so than any other Disney movie since The Lion King. In my mind it really brought back the animated musical as an art form. Prior to PatF, all the acclaimed animated features of the late '90s-2000's were usually Pixar (no musicals there) or Shrek and other Dreamworks fare, usually not musicals, with the exception of Happy Feet (and one could debate whether Happy Feet was critically acclaimed).

Since PatF, we've had Tangled, Winnie the Pooh, Happy Feet Two, Rio, and the Lorax (which is an excellent movie, btw, and the songs are really good).

And no, I am not counting South Park in any of these lists. :)

So while box office numbers may not have been what Tangled's were, and the quality of the film as a whole was maybe just under Tangled, I still give PatF major props for resurrecting the animated musical as well as hand-drawn animation, and I think it has earned its spot in the Disney pantheon for again saving Disney Animation in the way that LM, BatB and Aladdin did in the late-80s/early 90s. Will it become a classic as those films did? Probably not, but it should always be remembered in the same vein.

That's all I'll say about this any more as this is getting into major thread drift.

It's not just you. I also think PatF is better than Tangled in pretty much every way; characters, story, villain and music. I wish they'd use the material and build an attraction in New Orleans Square at Disneyland.

While I love both of these shows I am kinda ready for something new. I wish they would also do something new with Indiana Jones. I would love to see some kind of Pixar show with some new characters. Hey Disney, give us something new for the boys in our family please.:)

Wouldn't that be P&F? Or do you not have young children?

No my babies are not babies anymore, my youngest is 11. Even my girls (19 & 14) have been asking for something like a Toy Story show or something cute and fun at DHS. At this point we will take just about anything though just to have something new.

I will not miss either one of these shows. They were good back in the day but should have never ran as long as they did. If this is part of the alleged makeover of the park I am all for it.

Both VOTLM and BATB were tremendous shows when they first started. Over time each show was cut back in time and in their use of special effects. Now each show is just a pale shadow of what they were like in the beginning. It's time to put both shows out of their misery and replace them with something new. Same thing is true for IJSS except that they really need to totally purge Indy from WDW. The franchise lost its glow a long time age.

A quick summation to hinder repeat posts and catch everyone up ...

VotLM to be replaced by Phineas and Ferb
BatB to be replaced by Tangled

Correct?

Additionally, any plans for the old Hunchback Theater that they enclosed? Or is it essentially going to be like WoL in EPCOT and be show space?

I actually have... But still not a fan of his music. Sorry. I hear the same old same old in the majority of his songs, including the toy story movies. Just find him boring.

Regarding phineas and ferb...not surprising. It's a cute and popular show though as someone else fought up, really not sure of its staying power beyond a few 5 years. I'd rather have a classic Disney film replacing mermaid so it's a little disappointing

But apparently there's a P&F movie coming out in 2013 (in theatres)... so, if the movie is good and the franchise remains popular, will it then having staying power beyond 5 years!?!

I'm happy to hear this. If this show is done right it could be a great attraction regardless of what happens to the franchise/show in future years.

BatB and VotLM are both great shows, but I am not sad that they are (allegedly) being replaced by Tangled and P&F. Tangled was great - the whole family loved, loved, loved it. We thought it was the best Disney (non-Pixar) animated feature in quite some time. And P&F are awesome and I think will have staying power. One of the best things done on the TV side in a long time.
