Fire breaks out Enchanted Tiki Room

Some visitor reports that I read a few months ago indicated the attraction was in pretty bad shape and that there were broken show elements and dust everywhere. Let's hope they give the attraction a good fixing!

True, keep it closed for however long it takes to fix it and just change the awful thing, but guess its just repairs for now. Wake up call for TDO.

Have you seen the Tokyo show? It's really not bad. YouTube videos really don't do it justice. Seeing it in person, it's not a bad show at all. IMHO, of course.

I'd definitely call it much better than either UNM, or SGE.

In person? No. On Youtube? Yes. I don't aspire to "really not bad". I want the original back. It exists in California and it's terrific. It's classy. The music is timeless. It's a template for what Disney attractions should be.

I was there when it went down - was actually in Pecos Bill's at the time when we were evactuated (and man was I mad - I was at the counter waiting for my burger....but that's another story). So everything was evacuated from Tiki down to Pecos Bill's. We hung outside awhile to see if it would be something quick. Saw a few firemen go by, and lots of suits with earpieces. The CM that evacuated us came out to talk to us after awhile, apologized for the disruption, mentioned the incident was in another area. We went by Tiki right after, and activity was very quiet over there, you really would have never known.

We were back at the MK the next day. Heard grumblings from a few people that there was "significant" water damage to the attraction.

We never made it to the Tiki room this trip. I was more upset that I didn't get my burger that night!

The idea of putting Kevin in there is interesting but she's native to the South American rainforests (right? Definitely not Hawaii/Polynesia?). I hate to say it but the only Disney movie that takes place in a Polynesian atmosphere is Lilo and Stitch.

Not to start an entire "Kill the Stitch" discussion, but in the Tiki Room would be a logical fit. Throw in some Elvis and it may not be what it originally was but it's certainly better than 'New Management". Have Stitch and Lilo do meet and greets outside also.

I know Stitch isn't popular. I'm not his biggest fan either. But TDO seems insistant on shoving movie characters into rides, this would at least fit and make sense.

Did they at least give you a refund? That would be horrible if not!

Regarding the fire itself, although "Iago 1" is my least favorite character in the show, it saddens me to hear of ANY property damaged due to fire, especially something like a Disney Audio-Animatronic figure. I am glad no one was hurt or injured in the fire.

Regarding the idea being discussed by others about bringing back the original show - that would be great!

I do prefer the original and if they change the show, I would definitely prefer a triumphant return of the original rather then the current Japanese version.

On the other hand, I will say the UNM version doesn't annoy me nearly as much as it did when it was new. The only part that makes me cringe is when Iago first shows up and interupts the classic Tiki Room theme song and starts insulting it. (This wouldn't be as bad if the birdies could have AT LEAST finished the song first!)

But then Iago gets "zapped" for disrespecting the original show, so he gets his "just rewards" and punished for insulting the original.

So the rest of the show from there - from when he gets zapped to the end of the show - has really grown on me in a Country Bear Vacation Hoedown sort of way, in that it is not as good or iconic as the original, and the songs don't fit the genre or the time period as well, but I still find them catchy and enjoyable and not disrespectful to the original like the lyrics to Iago's song are.

So, due to the fact that UNM at least gives me a chance to spend time with beloved Disney favorites from the original show such as Jose, Michael, Pierre, Fritz, the "Cockatoo Chorus", the singing flowers, and the chanting tikis (all of which still retain their considerable cuteness and charm), the current Tiki Room is still my favorite attraction in Adventureland and in my MK Top 12.

Of course, if the original show ever comes back, it would be in my MK Top 5!

Here is an interesting essay from Passport To Dreams about Under New Management (the part about UNM begins in Part III):

If they ever do get the Stitch version I hope they'd keep it like it is in Tokyo but add the theme song. I've seen videos of it & it's really weird seeing the Tiki Room but not hear the song

l

Better than a refund, we got a coupon for 2 free meals at a different location within the MK for the inconvenience! So it was worth sticking around - got to be nosy, and got free food out of the deal.

Now if we can only get the original show back.....

There is a great article over at progress city on all the fallout and public distaste for the 'Under New Management' show surrounding the fire, it is interresting to note that the cries are not just from the fanboys, but the general public as well. Hopefully this will give Disney the opportunity to do the right thing and bring about a healthy new change.

Was a show going on when it happened? Have pictures been posted anywhere? I'd like to see how damaged everything really is.
To my knowledge only one small group of guest saw Iago 1 on fire. A CM was loading an ECV and upon reentering the theater saw drips of fire falling from Iago. The guest in the ECV was ushered through the exit and the guest being hold to enter where sent back out the main entrance of the attraction.

Ohh...That would have been an interesting sight. I wonder if anyone was brave enough to get any pictures. I would really like to see how everything looks now.

Now is such a great time to reinvent the the Tiki room. The only song that should return is the original Tiki Tiki Tiki room song but redone to give it a more contemporary classic feel. The rest of the show should be the birds along with the help of the tiki gods telling a traditional Hawaiian legend through dialog and song. The show should be classic in feel with music with a distinct Polynesian and Hawaiian feel. It should be authentic and accurate with no "pop culture", "referential", or "stereotyping" humor that the original and UNM rely on. The charm and humor in the show would need to be organic and relevant to story. The preshow area should also be changed to more of the garden setting that DL and Tokyo have and we should be introduced to the tiki gods for the preshow as it sets up the feeling of rich history and disbelief one must have when entering the main show. And then if we have to justify it all some how I don't care if they set up a giant promotional sign or booth at the exit to promote the Aluni DVC resort.

Im willing to bet it would be very easy to find a traditional Hawaiian tale that involves tiki gods, birds, and water. This just seems like a no-brainer to me.
