Fire breaks out Enchanted Tiki Room

I believe it's just the die hard fans that would like for the original show to be brought back. The original show never had a line and always had people walking out during it. I personally don't think it would be wise for the original show to return. What ever show does return it should also stick to the current length of the new management show (around 12 minutes).

Sounds like "Under New Management" to me.

The average guest at Disneyland is much more park savvy and knowledgeable than the average WDW guest. It's a shame, but it is what it is. Attractions that are more nostalgic or risk taking will be more successful in DL.

True. Its too bad we dont have the same sentiment here with both guests and management.
I dont think TDO has had or has any intentions of doing anything to the Tiki Room except running the same hideous show as it is. However maybe with this little incident they will quit sitting around picking their noses and counting their cash, and draw up a change, but unlikely.

I foresee NOTHING being done at all to the building. It will sit empty. They will not justify spending ANY money on it at all.

Unfortunately, I have a feeling you may be right. The management we know is more likely to shutter the attraction completely than give it a full refurb. But they may have a point...why drop a fair sum of money on a relatively out-of-the-way ride that receives poor attendance?

You have clearly never been to Disneyland.... lol there the show is usually full...the Tiki Garden where you wait is full... people in the crowd tend to sing, whistle, and get all into the show... Young & Old alike... the show works!

The reason the show was dying in the 90s is because Disney was letting it fall apart (sound familiar?) and who wants to sit and watch the birds lose their feathers (when they were not supposed to), birds whose mouths didnt work for months, roof leak damage, etc... the magic is lost with all that ....add to that the Offenbach number tended to put even ME to sleep (I love the Tiki Room!) and the craptacular situation is fully visualized!

WDW tried to fix it by updating it... and UNM was the result. The attraction is rarely full of people...and I have NEVER seen the crowd get into the show....not once! I am sure it has happened..but then again total solar eclipses happen too!

DLR tried to fix it by well FIXING the darn building...making Jose's flock gorgeous again....and the entire show building shine as it should! The story was shortened a bit including the removal of the Offenbach number. The result is a great timeless attraction that is probably as popular today (more perhaps even?) as it was in 1963.... DID YOU KNOW???? Disneyland has MERCHANDISE for their Tiki Room? Special Anniv events both on property and there are even some oraganized off property?

WDW's solution versus DLR's solution....its been close to 13 years now for UNM....the time has come to accept that DLR's solution was the better choice and it should have been the one WDW had chosen as well but they didnt. DLR's Tiki Room is a Plus for their park, can you say WDW's is so?

This fire is a Golden Opportunity for TDO to do whats right, and at the end of the day to look like Total Champs in the process....its a no brainer.... especially when you consider after 13 years the Original show (DLR's shortened version of it) will be new to so many people while being a returned love from so many other's pasts!

I think "Up" (South America) fits better than "Aladdin" (Agrabah).

I mean no disrespect to you. I just think Disney has a bit of confusion going on when it comes to Adventureland. But I don't think that it needs to have a geographical theme... I mean, it's ADVENTUREland so it should just focus on that. I feel "Up" is the perfect movie to embody adventure, but I'm still not sure about basing more things off of movies. I'd like to see something original but I highly doubt that will happen.

No disrespect taken. And I agree that Disney is confused on Adventureland. The flying carpets are just jamming up the whole area. I never saw the need for them and since they've been put in, I've never seen them busy.

Especially now with the FLE putting in more Dumbos, what's the point? I like Aladdin as a movie, I'd love a carpet themed Dark Ride through Agrahbah. But as it stands, it doesn't work.

I like the idea of Kevin in theory and in adventureland as a whole, Carl and the short mailman :)P) would be a great addition to that land. I just don't think in the actual Tiki Room.

As for the Tiki Room, if they won't go back to the original and insist on new, I'd prefer them to stick to the countries that the Tiki Room represents. Zazu and Iago never belonged there, with the exception of them being birds. By that logic, the singing flowers from Alice in Wonderland should be in there too.
Shoving characters in just for the sake of shoving characters in has got to stop.

God Bless them all if they somehow tie this into the 40th celebration... Walt Disney World: Where the memories of our past live in harmony with the memories we make today! Let the Memories Begin!"

I'll even hold the sign, for one month....FREE of charge!

Well if the rumors that the snow white dark ride is being closed, then an Aladdin ride would fit in at that location.

Agreed, a tiki plaza in front to get people in, it just needs a slightly smaller footprint than carpets. And as I said a couple of posts earlier, make it a drink stall that specializes in poly/tiki style drinks. The imagineers just need to look to the Polynesian for the inspiration of what to do.

The above photo is a rare example of a 'wienie' with a HUGE middle finger extended in front of it.
:fork:

Opinion:

You almost have to believe that among the (what has to be) millions of folks who've see the attraction, there is a small percentage who are huge fans.

Of those folks, some are at least somewhat technically oriented.

Of those, some even have access to production facilities/skills for production of relatively similar technologies.

With sufficient references + original audio.... the whole thing could be done reasonably fast, and reasonably inexpensively even by this small segment. Certainly in time for the 40th. Imagine what could be done with the original drawings + programming, and actually being able to see the attraction.

Bad Misquote:

All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for management (and imagineers) to do nothing (or add a strobe light).

Well if they want to remaster the original audio, yes it won't take that long for those that have the knowledge to do it. The same can be said for reworking the sequences with the AAs. At the most, it would take a month for a small team to do this and test it to make sure there aren't any problems.

Thank Eisner! According to cast he walked through Adventureland and wanted to know why there was so much open space and wallah, a spinner was born.

Awesome that is just what an open space needed, an off the shelf ride themed for a movie that was released a decade prior.

True. Its too bad we dont have the same sentiment here with both guests and management.

I think part of it has to do with the guests that come to wdw versus dlr. tdo can flip the bird to diehard disney fans and it won't affect the attendance. If team dlr did that, their attendance would suffer because their guest base is local.

Have you seen the Tokyo show? It's really not bad. YouTube videos really don't do it justice. Seeing it in person, it's not a bad show at all. IMHO, of course.

I'd definitely call it much better than either UNM, or SGE.

I've been visiting DLand quite a bit over the past year and have seen the original show there many many times.

It is in my opinion that converting the show to the original may not be that hard. Most of the stuff we hate about Under New Management was just additions and not changes/removals to the original show. All they would have to do is remove the Iago(s) and Zazu, and remove the Uh Oa (sp?) and replace her with a very basic fountain.
.

I wonder if it is possible that the original Enchanted Fountain exists in storage somewhere? Probably not, but then again Disney does keep a lot of things in storage! :)

I think in the majority of cases you would be hard pressed to find individuals who could tell you who Lady Tremain, Pongo, Anastasia, Horace, Drizella, Lucifer, Jasper, Bruno, Jaq, Gus, Suzy, Perla, maurice, Roger, Anita, Perdita, lefu, Sergeant Tibbs, Patch, Philippe, Lucky, Penny, Madame De la Grande Bouche Wardrobe, Babette, Monsieur D'Arque, Tiger Lilly, John, and Michael are.

Then thats up to Disney to fix...they have so many great characters in their bag...its a shame to neglect so many of them.... 101 Dalmations is a wonderful movie....just simply wonderful!

Generally I'm not one for adding characters into old attractions, but what if they incorporated "Up" into it?

The show at DLR works... its a timeless formula... keep the building in tip-top shape and the people will come.

I had read there were plans to redo The Enchanted Tiki Room and Carousel of Progress in time for the 40th, but I guess the plans were shelved. Seeing that the Tiki Room will now be closed for a month, I would hope they could do a refurb of the show, but I doubt it.

Have you seen what they can do in less than a month at DLR's Haunted Mansion converting from normal HM to Haunted Mansion Holiday? While it likely wouldnt be quite that easy, I imagine the conversion from UNM to the DLR's Tiki Room show could be completed in whatever timeframe Disney wanted...they have the money, the resources, and the people to do it.

Reports from Twitter saying cast members outside the attraction are telling guests the attraction won't reopen for a month.

If the AA is destroyed....I wonder how that could be replaced in such a short time....if that is even possible....since supposedly Iago was an A from another source that has long since disappeared.

Not to start an entire "Kill the Stitch" discussion, but in the Tiki Room would be a logical fit..

In Japan, Stitch is almost if not more popular than Mickey Mouse! Not true here. Ive seen the TDL Stitch tiki room show...even read the translations... imho it would be as popular (maybe less!) as UNM is...

There is a great article over at progress city on all the fallout and public distaste for the 'Under New Management' show surrounding the fire, it is interresting to note that the cries are not just from the fanboys, but the general public as well. Hopefully this will give Disney the opportunity to do the right thing and bring about a healthy new change.

Yes, many people seem to want to always ignore that this is a majority thing, not some small sector of people at all... Just Google this subject and see how many different places have discussed this dislike for UNM over the years...it seems to occur at some places I would have never known about if I had not googled it myself in the past.
Well said.

thank you

I did actually... lol

One idea that I truly wish Disney would embrace is using todays tech to set up the AA shows to have multiple show versions run concurrently with the ability to add new ones to rotate in.... Even give us Holiday overlays at the push of a button and a few quick addition of garland lol......
Expensive perhaps to initiate...but the longevity of the AA shows would be extensive since there would be more variety....

I love the Disney AA shows.... nothing beats seeing the character standing there rather than some TV screen lol

With what I have heard, the newer systems will store all of the movements and audio references like an audio loop file. Once all of the audio is mastered and movements are setup and tested, the file is just saved for when it is needed. If disney has a team in place, this would be an year long project but it would standardized every AA ride system. The same kind of park wide standardization could be done for the lighting using LEDs; disney could not only control the intensity of the lights but also the color.

Boathouse Row in Philadelphia received a system like this back in 2005, what is offered today and for the amount that disney would spend is going to be better.

The sad thing is what is likely is that it will just reopen within a month's time as the same show it was before it caught fire.

I don't get my hopes up until that sign out front changes.
