That's a rather personal disagreement. Was the 3D working? Turtle Trek was not Falcon's Treehouse's first time using this technology and they've been pretty well regarded shows that will likely only increase in number over the years as attractions seek to differentiate from technologies available for consumers.

Yes it is a personal disagreement... And that's why I said 'IMHO'...

I should say that if they keep Soarin' Over California, it will likely be deemed obsolete. If Avatar is a higher resolution, 3D and 60 frames per second, they will have no choice but to upgrade Soarin'.

I think the way TDO operates The Land Pavilion could burn to the ground and they still wouldn't say they "have no choice but to replace it ..."

Just thinking, too bad they can't pull this off . . . .

History (of the Tiki Room specifically) would seem to indicate otherwise.

Yes but ... History (of Soarin' specifically) would add credence to my point ... have you seen that ride film lately? It's embarrassing and to upgrade that to digital projection would cost what ... 3-5 million maybe? It's inexcusable.

The key to keeping this ride fresh is having the alternate storylines. I think in the end, this will help in re-rideability.

Then again, I love the Simpson ride at Universal. That one has been fun for me every time and it doesn't change.

You sound like 3-5 million is lying in the couch cushions. (If it is, I should check my couch! lol)

Maybe I need to get my eyes checked. I didn't think it was that deplorable last time I rode.

Last time I checked a billion dollar company like TWDC - $3-5million is coppers, and they could easily move money between the divisions quite easily, if they wanted to. They chose not to though!

Eisner's bonuses were regularly measured in the hundreds on millions of dollars. Everyone he fired in his time got huge payouts too. Maybe that's why they have no money left for basic maintenance. Plus still paying for John Carter;)

Saw it for the first time a week ago and the dirt and other contaminants swirling about onscreen was instantly noticeable, in my opinion to a show-ruining degree. The eye is constantly drawn to the man-sized black blobs, rotating and dancing around, especially in any scene that shows clouds or sky. That's in addition to the normal film grain. I can see how this was probably once a spectacular experience, but in its current condition it's screaming for digital projection, or at the very, very least a new film. Maybe once Test Track is open they'll be able to take it offline for a while, but seeing as how it still routinely has 2-hour waits, it will probably be a very long time before it's fixed.

How are they still recovering from John Carter when Avengers made all their money back to cover both films budgets and more left over???

Yeah, Avengers was definitely a home run for them. They still have to give Paramount a cut due to their deal to distribute Marvel movies that pre-dates the Disney buyout, but it's still a ton of cash. People question Iger as a CEO, but buying Marvel for around $4B seems like a real nice deal for Disney right now.

It would be nice to see the new high end projectors mentioned earlier in this thread added to Soarin' as well. You would think they could get deal ordering six instead of 4.

I'm curious as to why there isn't a second thread for the leaked docs discussion. It is very tedious trying to find where that topic starts in this thread.
There was a thread that had the blueprints....the blueprints were pulled and the thread was merged with this one....I think!

I know that when I clicked that thread it redirected me to this thread.

I agree, Soarin's screen quality is absolutely terrible. I could easily imagine how much better the video would look if it went digital, especially after seeing the newly digital France movie. Both theaters have tons of large black specs throughout as you said, Concourse B especially has it to such an extent that it actually becomes extremely annoying and distracting to watch. I agree that it ruins the experience. Concourse A may have worsened since I last rode that side as well, most recently rode B though and that's when I noticed how bad it is. Picture was already fuzzy on both theaters and in serious need of upgrading, the black specs are absolutely horrible looking though. I'd honestly be surprised if even the majority of regular guests didn't notice it, not to mention somewhat concerned for their eyesight if they couldn't see them. My mom and I both noticed, and I heard several other people talking to one another about the black specs as we walked out of the theater.

Definitely needs an upgrade to digital. I'm assuming that's possible. It can do wonders to an old and worn out piece of film, was stunning seeing how amazing the France movie looked after its recent digital conversion (there are a couple of parts that still look somewhat dirty for some reason though, specifically the flight over the sea to the hilltop church wedding). There are a number of films around WDW that seriously need a digital update. Philharmagic for example. But Soarin remains the worst due to those horrible black spots everywhere.

I'm going to assume that the Avatar Soarin attraction will be digital right from the start. I hope so anyways. Will prevent quality loss later on at least. They'd be stupid not to design it with digital projectors.

Is California Adventure's Soarin digital? Or is it at least in better visual condition than Epcot's?

You can't just 'convert to digital..' - there is no digital system that can do what Soarin' has in it's full IMAX glory. Digital is still inferior to IMAX -- even 4k resolution. IMAX is still roughly 10x the resolution of 4k and you still get the benefit of color depth in film that you don't get in digital.

To even get close, they would require using a matrix of projectors with digital processing to get greater resolution from the digital system. (basically how they make video walls).

So sure, they could just convert to digital - and it would suck compared to what the current system could do.
