It'll probably have legs like the original, though I doubt it'll make as much.
As the saying goes, it's risky to bet against James Cameron. That said, so far the performance is a bit iffy and hard to read. It's outperforming the original's opening day levels of course. But the original's opening day numbers were fairly poor, it was positive word of mouth (and a lot of repeat viewings) that propelled it to success after the initial opening.

I'm not entirely sure if the same conditions that allowed Avatar 1 to continue climbing heavily after opening are going to be present for the sequel. The original had a slow burn due to being an unknown new IP that needed word of mouth to get it started. The sequel however is releasing with pre-existing public awareness and ability to ride a lot of the popularity of the original. So there's a chance it will follow the trends of other big name movies and make the bulk of its money in the early days and quickly dropping off after. It'll be interesting to see if lighting can strike twice though and keeps climbing as the original did.

Every article should bring up the fact that Iger was the one who decided to leave when he did, picked Chapek and was his mentor for a year.
It appears that Iger never wanted to leave. Instead, key shareholders, BOD members, and some senior leadership executives allegedly had been encouraging him to retire for years. Iger was pushed (but not forced) to step down.

I suspect Iger never wanted to go and felt no one was good enough to replace him. Ultimately, Chapek’s selection as CEO was about being in the right place at the right time. Iger never thought Chapek would be a great CEO. This is why Iger reportedly felt so strongly about mentoring Chapek.

Chapek made mistakes but Iger was always looming over him, making Chapek’s job that much more difficult.

As usual, Iger is trying to change the narrative and pass the blame onto someone else. It's one continuous legacy and mindset.

Every Chapek failure is an Iger failure.

I am starting to think I was drugged with some hallucinogens and imagined that Iger hand picked Chapek to succeed him.
Iger didn’t pick anyone….

He was gonna continue to play the “wha?…you want me to stay?” Nonsense game and woulda offed chapek…

But he got scared of the Vid…and a scenario where the stock would tank and he couldn’t dodge blame…so he quit like an absolute COWARD.

Full stop.

History is full of facts.

All the more reason that Iger is a horrible choice to again chose the next CEO.

Actually, I would not term it as "looming" but more like lurking in the shadows.

Had Covid not happened, I fully believe Iger never would have left. He stepped back for a brief time and let Chapek take the heat while he continued to lurk in the shadows continuing to dictate company policy (again the company was only actually Iger-less for about 11 months).

I also feel that as long as he doesn't sense another disaster incoming, Iger will attempt to remain on for as long as the board keeps voting him back in. I don't buy the "temporary" nature of his return, or that there's any actual succession plan in development.

So is Avatar 2 in trouble?

Sure it’s doing “fine” at the box office but considering it needs to make 2 billion it seems to be struggling.
It will have legs. Both Titanic and Avatar opened to middling box-office and we saw how that turned out. The reviews are good and the people who have seen it are raving (myself included) so good word of mouth. Never discount the WOM - look at Greatest Showman :)

It warms my heart that all my Padawans here have found the “true way”

There were fools in early covid on the threads adamantly defining their lord Bobby saying it was “planned”…
…the only way you couldn’t sniff that one out is if you didn’t have a nose.

It’s a lot to ask anything to have those kinds of legs these days
