I bought a house in August and then lost my job right before Christmas. I had a one year teaching contract (graduated just last year). The teacher I was replacing was on leave for a year to travel. When the economy collapsed, he decided to return ... 7 months early. My contract was worded "one year or return of the teacher" so I was out of a job.

I had just taken my December trip, Christmas was on the way, and I had to take two subbing jobs plus I went back to work at the law firm where I had worked my way through school. I am pretty much living paycheck to paycheck, and robbing Peter to pay Paul, if you know what I mean. On top of that, my ex-husand is refusing to pay child support, "due the economy." Doh!

I know I could scrounge and save for another trip in 2009, but my head and good old common sense is telling me otherwise. Instead, I come to WDWMagic to get my fix, and plan my late August 2010 trip so I'll have something to look forward to.

What's killing is me is that I am the WDW-go-to-gal in the office and I have 3 co-workers who I am helping to plan their WDW vacations.

Anyway, I have banned myself from WDW until August 2010. I just had to share this with people who would understand, commiserate and help me get through this.

I feel your pain. Imagine what it's like for us Brits who love WDW - not only are we dealing with the worse recession in decades with job losses being announced every day, we've also seen the value of the pound decrease by 35% against the dollar which means when we do finally get over, everything is costing 35% more than it did last time.

Times may be bad but we will return.....

I feel your pain! I think that you're being sensible by waiting though. And your ex should know that while the economy may be making it hard to pay his child support, it is also making it harder for you to raise your son. Men.

Hey, don't go lumping us all into one pile. As I sit here wrapping up a work day from home, watching my two girls because they are off from school, my ex-wife is not off from school, her new husband is working,(honestly, I am glad to have the girls, we each try to get as much time as possible) and you really don't want to know how much I pay - like clockwork - in child support as well as "other" things for the kids (softball, tae kwon do, 1/2 of the communion dress, etc etc. Not complaining because it's the right thing to do, but there are men out there who do the right thing and get dumped into the pot anyway. [/rant]

Anyway. I kind of know what H2O is going through, but not to the same extent. I really can't complain as I still have a job, and I have a WDW cruise/trip with the kids comming up in August. However, I have seen the layoffs time and time again. I have also seen the increase in prices. We would normaly be going somtime before August, but I don't know if thats in the cards right now (I may go the end of March, because I may end up down there for business, but the kids miss out)

I know it's really nothing to complain about, as there are people that are barely getting by, and I am talking about not being able to take a second trip in a year to WDW, but i have been not doing a lot of things (like buying a house) because I wonder if one day I am going to get that call to come into my boss' office.

It's scary out there.

Just to clarify, I had thought after I posted that some men may take offense at my comment. I was not refering to all men, just the OP's ex. And I guess some men who don't take responsibility for their children.

Ah, I was not offended. It's just that there IS a very real stigma attached to divorced men with children. In many many cases it is deserved. But in many many cases it is not. In this case, most assuredly not.

I'm so sorry for the run of bad luck you seem to have hit, H20Babie. What do you teach? It seems that math, science, and English are more high demand than other areas. I'll keep you in my prayers.

My wife and I also know what your going thru. I had shoulder surgery in Sept of last year, was out on disability and everything that could go wrong did. First my dis checks didn't start till 6 weeks after, that screwed up the bills, my wife has a school loan got behind on that so they garnished her check to the tune of 400 before taxes for 3 pay periods, (she only pays 85 a month) it would take her 2 years to pay the 1200 they took out. Our electricity was turned off once, cable 3 times, cells 3 times, the last 3 dis checks were terminated, appealed that. Had to put down one of our 2 dogs couldn't afford what was wrong with her, then my step father passed away. At this point I'm waiting for the big rock to fall out of the sky and hit me. :hammer:

Well, when it rains, it pours, right?

Got a call from my son's school this morning. They want to have him tested for ADHD. The school division has a 3-4 year wait, so they want me to have him evaluated privately ... anywhere from $1200-1800.

My son is very active, and has been since the day he was born. I'm not sold on the fact that he has ADHD, but better safe than sorry. And, no, neither me or his dad have any type of health care coverage at this time that would supplement the psych eval. Argh!

My Gosh, what's next? I think I need to go watch Chicken Little :)

I feel your pain....

Between the Lexus and Porsche payments as well as the Yacht payment, we barely have enough left over to eat out 5 nights a week.

Let alone go to Disney World........:ROFLOL::ROFLOL:

A little humor........very little

I know how you feel. We were able to afford 5 whole days in October, which was the first time we had been there as a couple. It looks like it's going to be awhile until we return.

Two weeks ago I was let go from a company where I worked for 18 years. One difficult task, among many, was telling my daughter that vacation is “up in the air” for now.

She asked me how long I can be out of work… I told her, “Years, if you get a college scholarship.” Okay, the last part was a joke.

I am so sorry to hear that. You would think 18 years of loyalty would mean something in these times. :fork:

Perhaps planning for August 2010 would cheer you up

Don't let them do that to you! There's no excuse for them being 3-4 years behind. If your son is school age he is entitled to a free and appropriate education. It's the school district's responsibility to have him evaluated. If he's pre-school age he should fall in the category of your local (city/county) early intervention program. Call your school district, your pediatrician, your local social services division before forking over money for a private evaluation.

Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your bad luck while I hate to say it or even think it we may be in the same boat. We are buying a house that needs a little work and with the cost of the repairs plus football schedules I just don't know if we are going to make it work this year. The bad thing is that I have to decide by the 26th whether to book or not under the free dining code. (it saves us so much money) The sensible grown up me says not to book, wait and see what happens and how much we have to spend but the 3 year old me says book it anyway and make it work. :brick:

Something tells me that the sensible me is going to win....:(

You are 100% correct (Went though all of that with my kid), with one small problem

She lives in Canada.

What you are saying is correct in the US (or more specificaly in NJ - it may vary slightly from State to State. In Canada, I don't know what the law is there.

However H20, it can't hurt to look into it. I don't have the "book" in front of me right now, but if I remember correctly, once a child is referred to the child study team, they have a 90 day window to evaluate that child. Either using school district resources, or external private resources contracted by the school district. If the parents want to conduct their own testing, then that is the parents cost.

Also, again I don't know about in Canada, but no matter what your child is tested as, YOU as the parent have the final say as to how that child is schooled, be it in a seperate classroom, extracted for remedial reinforcement, or no treatments at all. As long as the child is not a disruption to the class.

That stinks (substitute your own word there)

18 is tough. Too short to consider retirement, but long enough that you have built a career, made connections, and are starting to get some of the perks of seniority.

I have 12 where I am now, and hope that ax stays away from my neck.

Sorry, my bad:(. But definitely look into your rights, even here they'll try to get away with not giving you what you're legally entitled to. Do ask your pediatrician for a referral if you do need to find someone on your own. The way the person conducts the eval greatly affects the score/outcome. Best of luck!
