AVATAR breaks ground

On a serious(serious? it is a theme park after all) note. @sshindel I agree whole heartedly with your overall point. Disney has seriously mismanaged this from go. First they announced it WAY too early. They had nothing to show us, nothing to get us excited. Now, they are breaking ground, and we still have no idea what they are up to. 2 years have gone by with no new info. Why would anyone be happy and or excited about the groundbreaking now?

Some people where upset about loosing the nice quite part of the part that was CMM. Based on the reaction to this project, it sounds like this will still be a nice quite part of the park since no one will likely go there. ;)
Ya I don't get it CMM was terrible. I'd understand if people were upset or angry about FOTLK if it was leaving for good.

I agree that it would be nice to have some details on what they plan to actually build, but they are building something, that is what people should be happy about. Now, I'm not saying they shouldn't be upset that it's not Star Wars @ DHS or something else, however, it is something. It's not because Avatarland is being built that Star Wars is on hold or cancelled or was never real at all, who knows. As far as we on the outside know, based on hearsay and speculation, any other great thing planned or otherwise that was put on hold may or may not have been held because of cost overruns of NextGen implementation, not because of this. That is why I'm excited. I couldn't stand the movie, but I'm still excited that something is being added to the AK. Yes, Camp Minnie Mickey is being removed, but this is not just a direct replacement for that, it should be much, much larger in scale and scope, so even the most negative Nancy out there cannot call this a replacement, it is a true addition.

What is the addition though? We don't know. We have inklings of info from our trusted insiders. But nothing from Disney.

I don't just get excited by construction. They could be adding crap. I don't know.

This has been seriously mismanaged. You only have to scroll through the Facebook post to see that. When Uni announced HP2, what was the response like?

And once it opens up all of those people saying negative things about Avatar will still end up going due to curiosity. You just can't walk by Avatarland and not be interested to see what it looks like

Maybe, but the questions are:

1.) Will they plan an extra trip to WDW for it? (doubtful)
2.) Will they plan an extra day at AK for it and not sabotage another park visit at WDW?
3.) Will they buy any Avatar merchandise?

The answers to these questions won't be as positive as Disney is hoping I don't think.

Agreed. If I go back to WDW, I will visit Avatarland, but there's no way I'd make a special trip to see it.

I truly hope this project ends up being a spectacular success, but I think that Disney backed the wrong horse. People say that Harry Potter is a flash in the pan, and it may well be, but in every day life, I know many people who feel a deep connection to properties like Harry Potter and Star Wars. I have never see anybody get worked up about Avatar except for Disney fans who are angry that Disney is chose this franchise as the elusive Potter Swatter.

Ok, I understand your point. But, if you were one of those companies, and people were screaming hate for something they've never actually seen or experienced? Something they actually have NO concept about, would you automatically cancel the project? If Coke came out and said, hey, we have a new offering in the works, something that we're really excited about, and it's going to be bacon-flavored soda. Bad example, everyone loves bacon. Ok, your example, licorice flavored. Not that they are replacing their formula, because that is not what Disney is doing here. It's an addition. So, a new flavor. They're going to put out a new soda. I doubt they'd cancel this new flavor because of 50% of their Facebook comments were negative. They'd likely still try and put it out, if they believed it was going to be a good product, and have it's own fanbase.
And this is where we probably agree. This has been a massive failure, so far, in the information. IF Disney believes in this project as strongly as they do, they should be showing the online community why they have no reason to worry. A few pieces of concept art, released to some super-fans (I dont think those hit the actual media), and a little video from J. Cam at D23 (again, it's target - superfans). That's all they have thrown out. This had better be a wakeup call for them. They had better realize they have some major PR to do here. If they believe in this project, and I think they do, then they had better get out and show us why they do.

Anyone forget about the 'new' Coke and the bite back from consumers or is that lost in this day and age....

I think Avatar isn't going to bring more people into the park like Disney is hoping, but it does have the possibility of keeping current people in the park longer. The big question is does Avatarland does enough to keep people at AK to night time since Disney wants AK to have longer hours?

Avatar made a lot of money at the box office, but it is not what we call a classic movie. Avatar is already being forgotten about. That means it wouldn't draw more people into AK, but it will only try to stop the bleeding.

All I think Avatarland is going to do is turn AK into something DHS is currently. That is a park with a night show, but doesn't have enough attractions for doing a whole and day.

1) Yup, I'll plan a special trip to see Pandora. I've got to do something with my 28 days of unused tickets.;)
2) Do I really need to ride RnRC a 40th time or TSM a 25th time? I guess DHS is out-of-luck.
3) What's an Avatar? If they're as adorable as a Minion, I just might. :D

I'm hoping Pandora is the most awesome addition to WDW since Expedition Everest in 2006. (I really do feel sorry for the millions of WDW vacationers who have never seen a working Yeti.)

But 2017? :jawdrop:

Disney use to build entire theme parks in less time.

"Exciting set of attractions unlike anything our guests have ever experienced." Tom Staggs. This makes me excited. Sounds like they are really gonna bring it
