AVATAR breaks ground

The Epcot Manifesto
Of the 36 comments showing on my last load at Facebook(there are several hundred more, but I'm not counting that many), only 7 were positive. What separates Disney from Uni? I'll give you a hint, Iger -- it ain't Avatar. Great themed lands is not enough... Uni can do that as well (and these days better). It needs to have Disney magic, which is something corporate Disney can't understand because they don't care for the product. I think Disney has two major flops on their hands. First MM+, and then Avatar. Both will cost considerable sums of money, but do little to boost attendance. I guess time will tell...
Why is it not possible for Avatar to have Disney Magic?

I'm striking that question out because we all have arrived at an impass in the (how many years?) 2 1/2 years that Disney has been sitting on this thing. There are those that think this will fail no matter what. There are those that are willing to give it a try. There are even a few folks that think it'll be a home-run no matter what. The main point is, at this moment, with the tiny bit of information we know about this project, Side A is not going to budge, Side B is not going to budge, and Side C is just happy to be here.

I'm glad to see ground breaking. I'm glad to finally get to watch something happen here. Slowly. Very slowly. Glacially slowly. But at least something tangible. Even if it's just a mound of dirt and trailers, or seed and mulch. Something. The day is now coming when Side A and Side B will eventually be able to see the results for themselves and judge them based on what is actually built.

Are the negative comments on other sites mostly directed at the concept of Avatar or the placement of it or the length of the time Disney is taking with the project? Do you think Disney will take notice and begin a major PR thing?

I am neutral on the Avatar issue, but after reading some of those Facebook comments I am now rooting for imagineers to create a gorgeous immersive environment that makes people eat their words. It doesn't have to be a great movie to translate into an amazing physical environment.
You know, I had that same reaction. I want the folks in charge of this thing to pull the old sports coach. Print out those comments. Plaster them all over the walls of the design areas. Print up a big, Office Space inspired banner that says "Lets show them".
Of course, I'm expecting they will either ignore it completely, or brush it off in some fashion, and continue on whatever course they were going to go anyway.

Wow Facebook is getting pretty nasty. Anyone who follows it, how was it during the initial announcement?
Michelle brought it to my attention. The official WDW page was surprisingly plentiful (more than half) with negatives that weren't being deleted. Unless they couldn't keep up.

Other fan site FB groups seem to more 75% negative.

Interesting straw pole. Obviously the demographic is still slanted to those with some prior interest but not as dedicated as members of this site are.

I will go on a limb and say Pandora will not flop in the least. Ready for construction photos!!!

There is no Wow because the build up has been 3 years...people will be wowed when it opens. Even then people will be saying "It is beautiful and the boat ride is awesome BUT they should have used a Disney IP or built Beatly Kingdomme" Waa Waa

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
Let me be the first to say, WOW!

I am super excited to get anything new at my least favourite park. I actually have no doubt that it will turn out to be pretty spectacular. Cameron is too much of an egotist to let it fail, and Rohde does a great job with immersive environments.

Don't stop now Disney, DHS and Epcot need major improvements as well.

No offense, but that is dumb. OK, I admit, that was offensive. But you can't just spend $500 million (conservative budget for Avatarland) and see what happens. You better have a darn-good idea what will happen. I.e., I spend this and attendance will go up, or at the very least stop going down, or hotel stays will increase, or something...

Yes, some people are cheering it -- but the overwheliming majority of people are against it. That means something. Yes, there will always be naysayers on the internet. But if Disney broke ground on Carsland at DHS, do you think only 7 out of 36 comments would be positive? I think those numbers would be inverted.

So, we can take your suggestion of just spending money and seeing what happens, or maybe, just maybe, try to understand why so many people are against this and whether there might be a better use of (increasingly) limited funds.

They really run the gamut.
People hating the movie
People hating the idea of Avatar in the parks
People hating how long it will take
People hating that they are removing the Tree of Life for this. Really. Multiple people saying they are never visiting again because they are destroying the Tree of Life.
People hating pretty much every single of the above mentioned things.

I didn't realize we worked for Disney! I better tell my wife and kids!

What do WE have anything to do with it? We are people on internet message boards talking about a project being run by a different company. We have nothing to do but wait and see! Unless you are on the project yourself, I'd guess you have the same option!

I didn't say Disney should just kind of crap this thing out and see what happens. I said, us, we, the internet community at large. The people that have spent millions of posts fighting over and over, through many threads, on if this is a success or failure, based on nothing more than a few rumors, some concept art, and now a pile of dirt.

No, they are not removing the Tree of Life. Shows how little Disney has really got out in front of this message. They announced it, basically ignored it in the media for years, let speculation run wild, and then threw out a picture of big shovels.

50% seems generous based on what I am seeing.
