Another Disney Parks "New Years Eve Announcement" 2012

Announcing some kind of a contest seems to make a lot of sense for the "big" announcement, as it should be able to give a choice between east coast and west coast parks.

Is TWDC smart enough to prepare for the coming "fiscal cliff" or will they just REact to any reductions in park attendance? Contests are nice, but real savings on trips, as mentioned previously on this thread, would be met with more interest...

It's sad that Disney apparently recognizes that they are so outrageously priced for the average family that they have to broadcast their Wal-Mart style deal on national television during one of the most watched events. This tells me Disney is concerned the average family will not consider looking into a Disney vacation unless the company screams "You can come for 30% off this year!"

It had been previously announced. No one seemed to pick up on it, but it was officially announced. Here's an article on USAToday from last December (including official Disney PR): http://travel.usatoday.com/alliance...loridian-Villas-to-open-in-late-2013/581715/1
Sure but one thing to consider is there is a difference between being announced and being announced on national television. For us who regularly post on these threads, it's easy to forget that most other people's lives don't revolve around Disney.;)

The "New" Fantasyland was announced years ago and has been open for months. Yet I suspect the majority of people watching the Disney Christmas Day Parade had no idea. To them, it was news.

The New Year's Eve announcement could be "real" news or simply something that will be news to the majority watching the show. Either way, it's fun to speculate!

That irks me... just about every single print, online, or TV ad always promotes some sort of discount.

Walt Discount World...this is good for your brand?

This. There is something terribly wrong when the general public has been conditioned to only go to Disney during free dining or when some weird discount promotion is released. The problem being that Disney continues to raise prices - to a point that even 30% off is still 30% too much for the average family to afford. I am just tickled that Disney finds themselves to be such a sophisticated and premium product while stooping to the Wal-Mart/flea market business model of discounting and begging for business.

Did everyone already forget that "Limited Time Magic" already had a big announcement with a castle made from ice in Times Square?

I think this counts as a proper "announcement" and not just "already being known by the fans on discussion boards"

I know that Disney always managed to even stay below the lowest expectation possible with these announcements (yes, I actually thought they would announce some entertainment changes at the studios that were rumored at the "What's Next/Around the World" presentation in December), but I can't imagine that they would really announce something twice!

So announcing a discount for next year is a bad thing...is it better to have to pay full price??? Wouldn't people be pretty outraged if they just cancelled all of the free dining and room discounts? This place confuses me sometimes.

The vast discounting and free dining has led to a lot of the decline you see in WDW now. Free dining dilutes menus and higher quality foods.

It's conditioning guests to expect a lower quality product than Disney parks should be

I really think the announcement will be for Fastpass +. Limited Time Magic has already been announced. If FP+ goes live in May or June, they need to announce it in January so people can start planning. For all we have discussed it, it really has not been talked about much by the company.

I agree that I hate the free dining thing. It results in a lot of issues getting ADRs and generally has reduced the quality of food IMHO. That being said, if they announced they were stopping free dining on New Years Eve there would be a half dozen threads on here with outraged people talking about never going back and blaming TDO for being cheap. If they announce that they are extending or adding to discounts a large group of people on here will be ed that it's just more discounts and complaining about what a let down the announcement is.

Perhaps that's the catch 22 the company has placed themselves in now. And the hole they've dug keeps getting deeper. The longer they wait to climb out the harder it'll be.

I actually watched the parade (as per holiday ritual, hot chocolate in hand, gingerbread in the other) and when one of the many adverts for New Fantasyland came on, my roomie looked and said "wow, so that's what you've been talking about" then without batting another eyelash, turned and walked out of the room.

That's how exciting the expansion is to a non-Disney fan. :\

Is this the type of people they're trying to sell vacations to?

Yes, they just don't quite have the goods to do it with yet.

A 30% off offer was released to Disney Visa card holders today. And like the good little Pavlovian dog Disney has trained me to be, I instantly became excited. It hits the consumerist nature inside most of us right in the solar plexus. I eventually calmed down and realized that even at 30% off ( or 20 % off for a value resort) it still wasn't that good of a deal for us. The park hopper tickets really are the deal breaker at over $550 per person. And an annual pass would be great if I could guarantee a second trip within the year.

For now we have decided to wait and see where this fiscal cliff thingy is headed before we commit to a $2k trip.

Oh, I understand this. But I doubt even that they would be foolish enough to use NYE telecast as a platform to announce a DVC that not only has already been announced, but just had a spot on the Christmas Day Parade. They may make mention of it, but there will almost surely be something else.

They very much care. I've read two quotes from Iger saying the discounts have to end. I'm sure one of TWDC's top business objectives is to figure out a way to greatly cut back on the "Free Dining" and "Room Only" discounts.
Certainly eliminating discounts like those you mentioned are a good thing (Hopefully we'll get improved food across property over time), but have either Iger or Staggs recently taken their wife and kids on vacation at WDW? Those discounts are obvious drag on the bottom line and hurt the quality of the product, but do the care about quality? Have they seen the ECV littered pathways of the MK? Have they seen the countless show issues and poor upkeep because maintenance has been cut way, way back?

A better question, do they know how to measure quality? Have they taken their kids to TDR or BG or WDW and DL of ole(Pre Pressler and '94)?
And you certainly know skipper john, the pixarians and the imagineers have.
