Another Disney Parks "New Years Eve Announcement" 2012

It is true that Disney will most likely never "reduce" their prices at this point. I think a massive economic collapse would have to happen before we saw something like that take place. But it does frustrate me to know that I will probably never have the opportunity to stay at the Polynesian due to its high price. $405 per night in a standard room during value season ( week nights only..weekends are higher) is just too rich for my blood. That is $2,025 for five nights. And that's just the room. Add another $1,500 for park hoppers and dining and you see where the theory that Disney is focused on the once in a lifetime vacationers comes in to play.

I'm not saying that there aren't people out there who can afford to pay $4-5k each year for an amazing Disney trip. I'm just unfortunately not one of them. I am one of those folks who watches and hopes for a good discount so that I can rationalize another trip. But, even with the current discounts being offered to Disney Visa card members, a four night stay (Monday to Friday) at the Pop with park hoppers and dining came in at $1,800.00 for two people. That is before travel expenses. Maybe it's just me, but I think that is still too high for four nights. So unless Disney announces deeper discounts than what is currently out there, I don't expect the announcement will be for anything I can enjoy. But I will still watch. I'm a Disney loyalist that way.

My point, I suppose, is that if I could go more often, I absolutely would. And isn't that ultimately the best kind of customer to court? Even if it means keeping your ticket and room prices stagnate for a few years? Disney has raised their prices faster than my household income has increased. I simply can't keep up. And that is quickly going to turn me from a very loyal, annual visitor in to a less loyal and less frequent visitor.

Even adjusted for inflation, tickets used to cost a lot less.

It will kill you to know that a Magic Kingdom view room in the Contemporary Tower was about $50/night in 1971 or about $280/night today. Now a similar room is well over $600/night. Of course, you could get a room for as low as $22/night in the annex buildings, about $125/night today.

It's the main reason I jump all over today's WDW management. They used to do so much more for so much less and with such better quality.

I used to stay at the Poly on a regular basis in the 80's and 90's. By the late 90's the rates were getting too high and now I don't even look at it. Hard to believe I once had four nights at Grand Floridian at $99/night in 1989.

This. There is something terribly wrong when the general public has been conditioned to only go to Disney during free dining or when some weird discount promotion is released. The problem being that Disney continues to raise prices - to a point that even 30% off is still 30% too much for the average family to afford. I am just tickled that Disney finds themselves to be such a sophisticated and premium product while stooping to the Wal-Mart/flea market business model of discounting and begging for business.

Nothing to add. Just wanted to make sure no one missed the point as you nailed it (OK, I get it, no fanboi/Imagineer jokes until 2013 ... Ok ...)

Not really. Eliminating my CM rates when friends would book me and sticking with AP/FL resident rates, I regularly stayed at DAK Lodge and WL for between $100-150 as recently as 2005 and rooms at the moderates for as low as $89 as recently as 2008 (had $99 rooms booked 2-3 times in 2009-2010 and wound up staying off-site for half that at better resorts).

The rooms have only gotten crazy pricey in the recent past. ... When I look at 40-60% off and say 'Ahm ... uh ... no thanks, I can do better', I KNOW the prices are too damn high.

Actually THAT particular promotion was pretty awesome... Watching the Tiki Room at 5AM and the M,M,&Y Castle show at 5:30AM was PRICELESS! My entire family had a Blast!
Help me understand the attraction-lack of crowds at that hour? Or the marketing buzz of doing something "special"?

I seriously want to know since there are things I would consider priceless ive experienced on property, but nothing done on leap day was one of them. The only thing that sounded cool was the retired menu items, but those were at DL

It was a personal experience of remaining IN the Magic Kingdom from before sundown and leaving after the sun rises.... if you do not see the appeal in that I cannot help you.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
All I know is if they take away free dining, then they'd better replace it with something that will save me just as much money (and I know that some will argue that free dining isn't free - but I've done the math and it saves DH and I approx. $300/trip). TDO has just about priced us out of our annual trips. :(
I guess that I too, am part of the problem, as we only travel during Free Dining.
Driving from SW Ontario to Buffalo airport (only a fool flies out of Pearson) plus Free Dining (in off season) is the only way our family can afford to go to Disney anymore.
Disney is so clever in selling their Free Dining Packages. All you do is call up your agent, give the dates, the resort, the number of people and what kind of passes, and they quote you one "all in" price. Nowhere do they give you a break down of what each element costs. If they did, I think people would balk at the park passes price and the room price in particular. Free Dining distracts you from how much you are getting hosed on tickets and room rates.

2013...The year of running water in the Ladies' Room sinks!

I joke, of course. They can't afford THAT! Running water is just a dream.

Actually Walt would say "". "DVC what the F is that?" "We have how many hotel rooms?' "Why is TSI not being used and why do I know everything in tomorrow land?" "Oh nice double Dumbo." Don't think the guy was a Saint I bet he would have something to say very quickly.
Actually, I think he'd be wondering how his plans for an entire city turned into 4 theme parks and a shopping district.

I hate the "Limited Time" Magic promo!:( I guess they were thinking "limited time engagement" or "offer good for only a limited time". Are we all supposed to "hurry in" for this promo? It didn't sound so wonderful when 1st announced!:( Perhaps it's the new 2013 Logo that everyone seems to hate!;) I don't see it being anything big or even news worthy for that matter.:( Time for a new theme? I'm not sure if they introduced a new theme yet. The Magic, the memories, and you is getting old. Time to change the parades too. No biggie. Just sayin.:D 2014 is what I'm looking forward to. Like so many others have said here, we simply can not afford to go every year.:(

I'm really not sure what to think of the phrase "limited time". It doesn't really have a positive sound- but for a company who wants people to book vacations months in advance, this is kind of confusing. Limited time! Act now! Going, going, gone! Moving fast! Hurry! LIMITED!

It doesn't make sense.
