The problem with him is that he is not versatile enough
That's a really valid point in the context of AI, but really, how many artists out there are successful in several genres? If Kenny Chesney put out a rap album, it would tank. Garth Brooks made that terrible Chris Gaines CD, and it was terrible, despite the fact he's the best selling artist ever (okay, before someone corrects me, that is not a quote, but a generalization).
That's an issue i have with AI - most successful artists today sing songs in their genre, and they put out a product that appeals to fans of that music. I actually think Randy and Simon were right on yesterday with their comments, it's not that Jason is a terrible performer, but he wasn't singing the songs he sings. They didn't tell him he stunk, but that he wasn't in the genre he belonged.
Now, some of you don't like Jason, and that's fine, too, as everyone has their favorites
.
I personally am
not the type of viewer who says "______is terrible!" I will usually say something along the lines of, "I don't like _______," because really, at this point in the game, we know they're all talented, or the judges wouldn't have put them there (okay, perhaps Sanjaya would be the exception
). Plus, who am I to say someone who is singing in front of tens of millions of people is terrible...all I know is whether I like or dislike the performance. Also, someone can have a bad performance and not be terrible, it happens all the time on Idol, and makes the competition much more interesting, IMO.
I have to say, though, that while I have one or two favorites, I am not really "gearing up" for the finale like I have in seasons past. I'm wondering if that has something to do with the contestants this year or if it is just the whole AI machine getting old to me.
