All about the awaited Soarin' Over the World movie

That's my concern, Sir.

But it should also concern Disney because pins aren't selling ... the local outlet dropped all pins to $3.99 three months ago, then $2.99, then last week $1.99 and a CM pal there told me they have plans to drop them to 99 cents if they can't move them.

People may still be visiting WDW, but they aren't pl__________g down $12.99 for a pin that cost a dime.

Maybe that will inspire Disney to actually do something for the 40th!

Good news for me on all ends.:lookaroun I guess I'll be hitting up the mall soon...

My guess would be a bigger Fireworks show or a promotional 15% discount for anything in the Disney stores. Probably nothing very exciting for the 40th.

Hey I'm in the same boat. Of course I'm a college kid who can't find a job back home...so I may be going back to the World in a few weeks to work.

Hey, you're on the east coast of the US, me too.

Sorry, I know waste of a post.:lookaroun

Sadly we don't have a Disney park here, but I still love Cedar Point. At Disney I relax and go away but Cedar Point which is in Sandusky, I'm in Youngstown OH so it's like 3 hr's away or somethin which is fun. (I've only been there twice though)

I don't think they want to ignore it...But I don't see them doing as big of a deal as usual. Be that TDO being TDO and cheap, or just the Economy, I don't know.

As usual as what?

When they ignored the 30th and 35th anniversaries utterly and completely? When they had fanbois shame them into one day celebs of EPCOT's 25th and DAK's 10th?

I was at WDW for the amazing Tencennial (a decade before you were born as scary a thought as that may be!) ... and can still hear 'Walt Disney World is Your World' in my head even if the theater where it played is now paved over so Phil Holmes can get to his Escalade faster. I was there for the 15th when they gave away a car a day as well as other gifts. I was there for the 20th when they debutted two new parades just at MK! ... I was also at DL for its amazing 35th, 40th, 45th (ok, that one wasn't great but they still didn't ignore it) and the spectacular 50th.

Disney has done NOTHING at all to mark ANY significant milestone at its Florida parks since 1996 (or actually early 98 since the 25th never ended!) and that wasn't very much of substance.

So again ... I'm trying to figure out why in the current recession/depression with the current management's mindset of doing as little as they can, why anyone would think things will be better.

I want them to be. I just don't see the basis for believing it.

God bless the "Ignore" button.
When you guys talk about changing things up (randomized or just changing 30 seconds out at will, etc.), I think something you might be forgetting is the music. It's a huge part of Soarin' and it is synch'ed prefectly with the video. It would take more than "oh, just pull out that 30 seconds and put in this 30 seconds" to retain the quality if the attraction.

I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but I AM saying that it's more than just a quick splice.

Anywhoo, back to the original point, I could see switching out entire movies to be easier than just switching parts because you'd need those parts to "flow" with the other parts from a music, movement, and possibly scent standpoint... seems that might be more difficult than just creating a whole new film... I don't know...

Yes, editing the film would require reprogramming the ride and rerecording the soundtrack.

The soundtrack may be the easiest part of it however. It would just be a matter of rewriting the score to fit the film. Same score just rewritten. I think that is what most people are hoping for even with a new film.
I think you're missing what GettingSmaller is saying. (S)He's talking about how if the video has different combinations, the music would have to do so as well, which would be a nightmare to score. Either that, or there could be one score, where each 30(?) seconds fits multiple scenes, but that would just cheapen the effect of the score anyways...

Each scene in the original is pretty much a seperate movement. There is a definate transistion in the music at the transistion of each scene. Just like having an opening and close ride position for each new scene, you have and opening and closing musical score.

I love, love, love the current Soarin' score. But I see no way that it would work with an international film. Maybe an American film, but the music is definitely all about Soarin' over California.

As much as I hate to say it, I would hope that WDI would have the sense to not keep the score the same. Maybe, the main theme could be kept, but it would have to be drastically re-written. IMO.

Edit: Strike that last sentence. I don't see any way it would work at all in an international film.

I know it's not going to happen, but wouldn't it be nice if they at least cranked out Soarin' Over the World by the 40th? Maybe for nothing more than a "Hey! Look over here!" diversion so that they could work on JII, HISTA, and WoL. I mean, it's not like any of those are going to hinder much ride time. I would rather them announce major refurbs of the aforementioned this October, but it seems unlikely. I can vividly picture JII and HISTA overgrown with weeds and covered in ivy before they get around to it.:brick:

Agreeing with you...But seriously, I think WDW has waited too long to do something like this. Believing that they DO read these boards AND others, there's the possibility that they see us incessantly talking about it and actually might meet these claims. This is me being optimistic. ;) I know there's a HUGE possibility for it to not happen. However, looking at the rumors we have, and estimating how long and how easy or hard it would be to instal some things (Soarin, RFID tech) they might THEORETICALLY do something small.

*whew!*:king::lol:

I could see it being reused now...It just works for the attraction.

I'm not saying I would be dissapointed if it was re-used. Just that I would expect WDI, from an artistic perspective, not to re-use it. Now if they're in cheapwad mode, then it'll be back, heck yeah.

To me it would be like re-using the Star Wars score, because it's great, in an Indiana Jones film.

But on the flip side, I can agree with what you're saying in that, while it may have been originally composed to fit the film footage, it has grown to be synonomous with the attraction itself. So I see it both ways.

Alrighty...Gotcha. Hope WDI is in cheapwad mode, if you don't mind...:lookaroun:lol:

Anyone else think that a simple fix would be to just incorporate musical instruments and rhythms from the respective countries being shown into the score? In this way, it remains the same theme we all know and love, but with the mixing of regional instruments into the score helping to broaden and relate the score to the new film.

Too bad Jerry Goldsmith wouldn't be around to give his input.

In know it's from Wiki, but here's an interesting quote:

"Both versions of the ride use the same orchestral score by film composer Jerry Goldsmith, who is said to have come down from his first ride in tears. In addition to finding the ride visually beautiful and magical, he said that his father was a pilot who loved all things Californian. "I'd do anything to be part of this project," Goldsmith said. "I'd even score the film for free."

:o

OK, now they just need to keep the score for his memory. It would be disrespectful
