All about the awaited Soarin' Over the World movie

To quote me

Major (OK semi-major) problems

And I would put it up there in the same class of problems. Soarin' is about the feeling of flight, the suspension of belief that you are in a ride mechanisim, and that you are NOT watching a film. When you see quite noticeable defects in the film, it kills that suspension of belief.

When I am on JII for example, I KNOW I am on a ride, and I don't expect to feel otherwise. If I see some chipped paint it does not make me all of a sudden feel like I am no longer in the Imagination Institute.

-dave

Not to nitpick, but the term is "the willing suspension of DISbelief." If you suspend belief, you're not believing.

Sorry, but I'm an English major and therefore stuff like this drives me insane, like the people at my job who say "Libary", "exxetera", "Exxpresso", and tell me someone's point is "mute".

Soarin' Over the World would be nice and fit well at Epcot, but they better be able to theme it well to California Adventure.
Do all Disney Resorts need the same attractions?

DCA's california theme is slowly going bye bye. Soarin' over the world would fit nice when the park retheming is done.

Soarin has problems. Major (OK semi-major) problems. The film and clear transparancy in front of it is full of defects. You can see them a black spots on the attraction. It's been that way for ages.

It's really only that way at WDW. The DCA version of the film is much clearer and cleaner. I noticed it when I first rode the WDW version in 2007, after riding the DCA version regularly since 2001.

I was talking about this topic with a manager in the pre-show queue of the DCA version after my WDW trip, and she said that WDW didn't invest in the deluxe version of the "Clean Room" they use to house the projectors at the top of the building and they have a "different" setup when it comes to routine maintenance there.

The result is that the WDW print of the film has specks and dirt that seem to float across the screen as they get into the projector lenses. The difference in maintenance also keeps the DCA film crisper looking and clearer overall. I just rode DCA's Soarin' a few weeks ago and it looked great; very crisp and clear without any specks or dirt on the screen.

What about Soarin' over old Scottish castles (Eilean Donan, Dunollie and Stalker), swooping down on the banks of Loch Ness or Loch Lomond and then taking in the myriad of Scottish Islands.

Considering the part that Scottish migrants played in the founding and continuing success of the USA, it would be a welcome nod to the old country.

Sounds great!

That's pretty...

I feel like they'd only do the home state (Florida) or the whole world, just because they don't want to exclude anyone. But as a segment, those Scottish castles would be PERFECT!

When you guys talk about changing things up (randomized or just changing 30 seconds out at will, etc.), I think something you might be forgetting is the music. It's a huge part of Soarin' and it is synch'ed prefectly with the video. It would take more than "oh, just pull out that 30 seconds and put in this 30 seconds" to retain the quality if the attraction.

I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but I AM saying that it's more than just a quick splice.

On the other hand, it does seem like they could go digital with the "film", and then updating it would just mean loading a new routine for the movement, scents, etc.. The only really physical thing to be switched out at that point would be the scents. Except for the scents, why couldn't you have 12 different films to show, if you wanted to, and let them be randomly shown? Well, this sort of goes to another thread where we were discussing a similar ride system in Pixar place... Why couldn't you have a digital setup that randomly shows: a flight through Bug's Life, The World of UP, Flying with Buzz Light Year, A Helicopter Flight with Mater, etc.?

Anywhoo, back to the original point, I could see switching out entire movies to be easier than just switching parts because you'd need those parts to "flow" with the other parts from a music, movement, and possibly scent standpoint... seems that might be more difficult than just creating a whole new film... I don't know...

I do have to join in with the "natural wonders" people... I would still ride it, but I don't care so much to fly over cities, etc.. One of my favorite parts of the current show is the canoeing scene. It's great flying down that river...

Yes, editing the film would require reprogramming the ride and rerecording the soundtrack.

The soundtrack may be the easiest part of it however. It would just be a matter of rewriting the score to fit the film. Same score just rewritten. I think that is what most people are hoping for even with a new film.

As long as it were to sound the same and evoke the same feelings...

...Otherwise...Another EPCOT Score...Gone.

I swear, EPCOT has bad luck with Scores and Classic rides...:(

I would love this if it would happen. I think it would fit perfect because Epcot has the WS. They could even add the countries from the WS into the film.

Because no one gives two hoots about Scotland.

We all know that if the UK is shown, it is England and not the cold, rainy landscape of the north :D

All for a new Soarin film but the Land is really about Earth and the environment not world showcase. Unless they are going to maybe retheme everything?

But they need to finish what they started like Spaceship Earth, and redo Imagination before spending money on Soarin already. Unless maybe a new sponsor might come on board?

This is perfect for EPCOT.. but please - keep it out of DCA!!! The California theme isn't going anywhere so it doesn't make sense to get rid of a California-themed ride.

Completely agree. When I first rode Soarin' in any form it was at Epcot in January this year. I thought it was nice and everything but it just didn't make sense that it was all California. The link to "The Land" was tenuous at best. Then I rode it at DCA in February and it made a lot more sense. Plus the queue is themed so much better at DCA.

The DCA version could use a new movie of California or at least clean it up a bit. There were noticeable marks even on the screen which was distracting to say the least.

I would really love to see this, although I think WDW & DCA both have a lot to fix before they start messing with tried and true attractions. In any case, I'll believe it when I see it or when there is confirmation from a more reliable source (no offense, but some blog written in broken english isn't exactly a reliable source in my book).

ALOT of precise information has come out of this blog (most concerning Eurodisney, however). The only reason the English is broken is because its his second language (that's only judging by his accent in one of his videos, though).

Look around its archives. Its got a lot of old concept art and WDI interviews. Verrry cool.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Soarin' won't get a new movie unless the attraction's appeal significantly dies down - which it's not doing anytime soon.
