Just kidding, we've all been there; bloody nips are not pleasant.

Just a little over 11 miles just now. Nice thin set of snow on the ground.

So I don't forget this weekend, my ultra plan consists of:
20 miles saturday
20 miles sunday
4-6 hour night-run sunday
Through the connections of a friend/teacher, I started working with a veteran ultrarunner, who actually has a PhD in ultrarunning physiology and teaches graduate health studies at my old undergraduate school. Intense stuff.
Cheers everyone.
It is Friday so I just thought Id throw that out there and be a little crazy non reserved. It is 100% true though. We are back to normal today... since I know everyone was wondering. LOL.

That is quite a weekend. Good luck on it. That would be a very interesting class to take.

Today the calendar said 19 miles

16 rolled around and I was feeling fine and dandy, and then my LEFT knee (the one I never have any problems with - my right was doing great) decided it did not want to play anymore.

I walked a bit, ran, walked, ran, and said this is not happening. 16.88 miles

I got back to my car and stretched for a bit and ran back and forth in the parking lot and it felt fine then. I decided not to push my luck and maybe injure something 3 weeks before the marathon.

If it was indeed the marathon, I do think I could have taken 5 minutes or so to give it a rest and stretch and I could have gone on. I had a weird pull, not painful, just weird, on my left leg, way up high in my glute. Maybe it caused me to run wacky. The pain was all in the BACK of my left knee (ACL area - scary) Who knows ?

Oh, and honey stingers? --> :D

Today I did 8.81 at 10:33 pace....Easily the longest run since I began just over 2 months ago.

I do think I am going to run the Tallahassee 1/2 on Super Bowl Sunday. I figure if I almost did 9 now (and certainly was not completely out of gas), that barring injury, 13.1 in 7 weeks shouldn't be too much of a stretch. Plus this is the one with virtually no sweep, so even walking some, I can finish.

Easy 5 miles this AM. I've decided 40F is my favorite running temp. Hard to believe only 3 weeks left! Have to do my 14 miler next week. :xmas:

Excellent

Weird indeed Dave. I have those times. I have had this pain right in the center of my right butt cheek. *snickers* Anyway, I gave it an extra days rest and ran this am instead of pushing it yesterday. 2 full days rest. It is fine on flat, but once I hit the hills in my route, it starts to probably get worked. Around mile 6 today, it started throbbing. Uphill pain only turns into downhill too, then anything including flats starts to hurt. I guess it will be another night of ice packs on my butt.

14 miles today!
Go getum tiger.... or donkey I quess I should say.

This morning, 15 miles in 1:57:08. I think I ran way too fast, but it is SO hard for me to downshift and run slower. It is about my normal pace for that distance. I will have to slow down next Saturday morning since Im sure this butt cheek thing will still be plaguing me.

EDIT: Well damn. I just figured out on mapmyrun.com I had a little section in mile 3 that was a double back for about 2.1 tenths of a mile. So, 15 miles was actually 14.79. Man, that is irritating. Now, I have to go and check all my routes that I have extended off this one. I have a bad feeling about this. Luckily, it is only .21 tenths and not 2 miles or something.

Iced butt cheeks, bleeding nipples. Man you are just a treat to be around :D

Glad I could assist in some funny comments. :D

Dave, after a long run of say, 15 miles (or in my case 14.79 since I thought it was 15) that day if you had run in the morning, how sore are you? Is your knee hurting a bit all day? Im wondering if my shoes are the cause of this soreness. Granted, I have not cataloged this amount of mileage weekly in my short running career so I cant compare it to anything. This week was 31 miles. My calves are a bit sore and my knees are a little achy. Lets not forget my butt cheek. I wonder if this is just wear and tear?

I have been subject to think that these Mizuno's are just not my perfect fit. I am trying t make them last as long as possible so my wife doesnt kill me for getting another pair since these were purchased on Sept 1.

Thoughts. Anyone else can chime in too.

Big milestone (wokka wokka) ...20 miles today!

I'll just copy and paste my DM post for this run:

20 mi 03:57 11:50 pace

This wasn't awful! Longest training run of the whole program. I kept a pretty steady pace, and had no sign of the dreaded Wall™ that's supposed to set in around Mile 20. I do have one GIANT blister on my left big toe that I find both fascinating and kinda freaky (think I might have forgot to Vaseline that toe because I had it taped to protect an earlier blister), but otherwise no real issues. Nutrition: 5 GU packets, 1 Snickers Marathon energy bar, and 45 ounces of Gatorade (minus whatever I gave back to Nature during 3 pit stops). In 3 weeks, it'll be this plus a 10K. Bring it!

Seriously, this blister is massive. It stretches down half the left side of the toe. Doesn't hurt to walk on though, thankfully.

Nice job on the run.

Holy cow. If you had hit the wall with that amount of stuff going down, we would need to talk.

I know what happens to me.

I run 15+ miles, and then stretch/cool down for 15 minutes in the parking lot, I drive 10 minutes home, and fall on my face. Seriously. I tighten up like nobody's business in the car - especially in the groin area - really, I don't know why.

After I stumble into the house and walk around a bit, i feel good. A hot shower then works wonders.

My legs are tired the rest of the day. I wouldn't want to do jumping jacks or some Tae Kwon Do for example, but there is no pain. My knees will yell at me if I do squats for the rest of the day. No getting stuff from a bottom shelf for example. My right knee especially does that. I think it has to do with the tendons. If I fold my leg so my knee is bent 180 degrees (my calf touching my thigh) the side of my knees hurt. The next day they are OK again. Aside from the paintball knee accident I don't have any real pain after I run, just some general tired muscles.

Nice job, but holy food. For the 16.88 I did this weekend - a quart of water and 2 honey stinger packs. Maybe I should be eating & drinking more.

I consumed a stage 1 gatorade 4 oz pouch, then 1 honey stinger about mile 6 and sipped on my 8 ounce water bottle the whole run.

That is it for me. 1704 calories spent in 1:57:08. I treated myself to a big, fat cheeseburger for lunch. :D

Thanks, guys. On the amount of consumables...I just pack enough GU to suck one back every 45 minutes, which they suggest on the pouch. I don't know if they undercut that to sell more, but that's why I had so many.

The liquid is a *tad* more fact-based. I think I read somewhere that 2 oz/mile is a good ratio. Today I carried a 20-oz. bottle in my hand, and packed a hip belt with another 20-ouncer + 5 oz. flask. Basically as much liquid as I can manage to carry.

The energy bar was just for the heck of it...since I'd never gone this distance.

But...I wasn't feeling ravenous when I got done, so there's that.

Wow, 3 weeks until marathon...I signed up back in April, so I am getting so anxious!

Lots o' miles this past week, I didn't even get to log everything down from my 305 I have been so busy. Totals coming soon...

I was reading previous posts about the food consumption for runs; for my ultra training the whole mantra is "eat early, eat often." Based on my pace, height and weight, for my 30-40 mile training runs, I am supposed to be consuming 200 calories every 15-20 minutes.(Honey Stinger is loving my purchases) That's just a base-guidline though. I have my g-shock timer set to go off every 20 mins, and then I down a couple honey stingers. Still trying to figure out my sodium/electrolyte formula with the salt sticks and honey stingers so I don't drop dead at mile 50.

This week should certainly be about 100mi.

Anough writing, time to run...

Just want to say to everyone who has hit their peak of marathon training this past week, congrats! You've put in the time, now enjoy your taper.

Joel, regarding your question about soreness, as my mileage increased way beyond what I was used to, I found my knees would be sore after my long runs (not painful or injured, but quite sore) so I'd ice them and they'd be fine the next day. I also had a fair bit of quad soreness after those long runs, but that worked itself out within about 48 hours. I'd say soreness is pretty normal at this point.

Donald Duck - You're just a monster with that mileage! All I can say is WOW!

Thanks Jill. I figured this, but it is always nice to hear others say that they have experienced similar things and it is normal. It is noon here and just over 24 hours since that 15, and most of the soreness is digressing, but my butt cheek is still hurting pretty badly. I think my shoes are affecting my shock absorbency which is going to my knees and then into my buttock muscles on that right leg.

My right foot lands a little different than my left and you can see that on my wear of my soles.

Thanks Jill...monster-mode. Good luck to you as well!

13.15 this morning. Wearing calf-compression sleeves now to "speed recovery and prevent blood-clots" due to the high mileage. We'll see if they help...

Cheers!
