They're arancini — balls of rice fried in bread crumbs.
I think thats the key.
People look at them and start thinking along the lines of fried cheese, or fried dough, or even just fried breadcrumbs (thats what you do with the leftover breading, make breadcrumb pies)
But, they are rice. They are going to have an entirely different mouthfeel than any of the above dishes.
Me, I think I would like them, I have had similar things in a Oriental vein. (Onigiri) They are not deep fried, but they are pretty much plain rice (leftovers) shaped into a ball, with a filling in the middle (finding a cold chicken nugget with catsup in the middle of the rice was a new one by me)
They are pretty bland as well, but I like them.
