And with one post, Disney Daddy was burned...
not need to mock him and stirr trouble man.
I just don't "get" Hello Kitty. Some of the people I've seen with cars slathered in the mouthless cat's image, steering wheel covers, seat covers, license plate covers, never mind the purses, bracelets and pendants are driven by adults who I just worry about when I see them.
Hello kitty is huge in japan.. like pikachu and others.. theres even full cars designed to look after the chars.

even the airline planes!

As the soon to be gone trolls in Maelstrom say, DISAPPEAR DISAPPEAR. Thank you, that is all.

so why do you and others want me to disappear? Because I have a different opinion on things and don't salivate at the thought of Uni?

Some of you don't realize I am critical of Disney as well...(lord knows they have things they need to do and improve on) and there are parts of Uni I do like...(and they have their own problems as well) I just don't buy into all the hype that Uni is the best theme park in the world and is gonna put WDW out of business

Disney didn't just buy Star Wars so they could make a few movies. Nearly 40 years after it's original release, Star Wars is still one of the largest and most lucrative IP's in the world.

Avatar, Frozen and Harry Potter are all great IP's, and in 30 years we can have the discussion about which is the best (assuming any of them are still around).

I can only assume that Avatar is 11 and Harry Potter is 12?

This is a great list, thanks for sharing this with us.

Absolutely, I was going to follow up the photos with some thoughts (dealing with unending jet leg sleep requirements) and this was the first one I had jotted down.

It's easily the best arrival of any Disney resort (sorry WDW but a Highway arrival isn't the same), helped in part by the sub tropical climate and lushness that transports you somewhere decidedly un-North American. The subway system here is top notch and gets you to SunnyBay within about 30 minutes from anywhere in HK. The resort line transports you and you really come off feeling like you are secluded. And all for only about 2.50$, and it's not even a Monorail!

Checked out the Disney hotels as well, but given availability of some many great hotels that are "on rail access" simply by virtue of the MTR system, it doesn't make sense to pay Disney prices.

A 2 day ticket is only 75USD and can be used for any two days (don't even have to be consecutive) within 7 days of one another.

At the current rate of expansion and with a second park inevitable there may be a time in the not too distant future that some will consider this the best Disney resort (even above TDR).
anyone can explain to me what is TDR?

is that disney land tokyo? or what? I know the other acronyms but this one baffles me.

Please, I'm not seriously telling you to leave the site... I'm not that much of a jackass. I just wanted to get one Maelstrom quote in here and that was the perfect opportunity.:)

I know they might sell the 3d movies, 3d kits, some shirts.. but action figures for kids? and other stuff?

That I knew, but those sales figures were USA and Canada. Most plane decoration I've seen in these parts was Shamu.

They can cram in more people, it's just that once those people are in the gate - there isn't enough for them to do. Either get in a huge standby line or wander the streets waiting for your next FP. The only way to fix the MK is by adding in more capacity

Or get on an attraction that is under utilized... which is what the old 'surprise' FP tempted, and what Disney's FP+ model is helping drive. Increased utilization of what you already have. Your pretense keeps assuming MK's attraction capacity is saturated... it's not. Your pretense keeps assuming the RESORTS attraction capacity is saturated.. it's not. Which is why balancing demand can be so lucrative.

Balancing demand and improving utilization is something you want to do REGARDLESS of adding attractions or not. That's why this is not an 'either or' situation. The money spent on FP+ NOW is not going to stop Disney from building attractions in the future.. which is why this whole 'either or' argument is stupid. The short term spending is of course impacted, but building a model to differentiate your product and improve utlization of your product is not a message that says "we think building attractions is a dead model". It's why you see Disney adding entertainment and other options at DAK. Keeping people in DAK longer is a way to reduce crowding at MK and balance your demand better.

The demand shaping is a large part of the value that FP+ offers to the operations side of the company. But it is just one of many aspects of the larger NextGen initiatives.

"just keep building attractions" is not a sustainable business model (ask six flags) and Disney is wise to avoid getting into a 'attractions arms race'. The challenge right now for fans is Disney has a huge backlog of stale it needs to address and needs to 'get fit' when it comes to balancing out their current parks.

From the Forbes article...

The Licensing Letter’s Top-20 List:
1. Disney Princess (Disney) $1.60 billion
2. Star Wars (Lucasfilm) $1.50 billion
3. Pooh (Disney) $1.09 billion
4. Cars (Disney) $1.05 billion
5. Hello Kitty (Sanrio) $800 million
6. Mickey & Friends (Disney) $750 million
7. WWE (WWE) $700 million
8. Toy Story (Disney) $685 million
9. Peanuts (Iconix, Peanuts Worldwide) $600 million
10. Sesame Street (Sesame Workshop) $515 million
11. Disney Fairies (Disney) $435 million
12. Thomas the Tank Engine (Hit Entertainment) $390 million
13. Garfield (Paws Inc.) $370 million
14. Dora the Explorer (Nickelodeon) $330 million
15. SpongeBob (Nickelodeon) $330 million
16. Spiderman (Marvel/Disney) $325 million
17. Ben 10 (Cartoon Network) $295 million
18. Angry Birds (Rovio) $250 million
19. Batman (DC/Warner) $245 million
20. Barbie (Mattel) $242 million

As both sides can see neither Harry Potter or Avatar is in the top 20. Now, we all know that licensing value in the retail market has little to do with theme parks. Both sides have a good amount of quality IP and are capable of providing high quality attractions and entertainment.

When looking specifically at IP in the retail space you would most likely prefer Disney as they sell princesses (#1), Star Wars (#2), Pooh (#3), Cars (#4), Mickey (#6), Toy Story (#8), or Fairies (#11) while at Universal their #1 IP for their parks in this list is Spongebob (#15) and Spiderman (#16) which combined don't even add up to Toy Story's take.

Very interesting article in many ways.

And not only goes with the fandom (yes, things like the Orange Bird obviously come to mind), but also with a lot of what Disney designs today. They seem to have fallen in their own trap of nostalgia overkill by becoming more and more self-referential in so many things they put out.
The way people eat up self reference is quite bizarre, especially as it is what now counts for detail. Why does Paris worship rats? Why would early 20th century New York have an amusement park filled with mid-century toys? Why is Walt Disney an intellectual property thief?

Tokyo Disney Resort, meaning the whole resort that consists of Tokyo Disneyland (TDL), Tokyo Disney Sea (TDS) and the three hotels (and I guess the shopping complex?)
The shopping complex is Ikspiari. There are also the Official Hotels (four or five of them) that are part of the Resort that are sort of like the Swan and Dolphin (in affiliation, not aesthetics), but with a convenient nearby monorail stop.

The beauty of WWoHP is that the merch is more or less exclusive. Excepting the airport store, you can't buy a chocolate frog or a Hufflepuff scarf and gloves anywhere else. You're not going to find a knock-off version at Target or Wally World. So in the grand scheme of things, not a lot of Potter merch is sold (there is some licensed stuff but nowhere near the level of a Disney Princesses or Peanuts), but a large amount of what is sold goes for top dollar from a few acres in the middle of IoA.

They did, they sucked and most of it ended up in the clearance aisle but so did a lot of Harry Potter toy merchandise from broom sticks, wands and action figures and even Lego sets. Retail sales at Target, Wal Mart and Toys R Us don't add up to a good theme park environment.

I see more Dr. Who stuff in stores lately than I do Harry Potter and Avatar combined. (Would love to see Dr. Who in a theme park, especially a TARDIS.)
