I don't understand the Value hotel bashing. We stayed at All Star Music mid-Dec and not only are the hotels on-site, but they were the cheapest option for at least 10 miles around Disney. We paid roughly 80 per night for the week.

I agree that they are Motel 6 / Super 8 style rooms and they get insanely beat up during their use. We were there during two different student competitions and the amount of inside and outside painting, cleaning and maintenance that had to happen (and was completed within 24 hours) due to abuse was shocking.

Those hotels serve a specific purpose and are priced in line with competition (and sometimes better).

I don't know why folks try to propagate this myth that there are tons of quality options near and around property that are cheaper / better than the values. (Now the moderates and deluxes are a different story entirely).

The hotel prices in the area have increased mainly in the last 3 years. I've booked hotels for our High School Band 4 times in the last 9 years and this is the first year that finding a hotel in the area for less than $50 was almost impossible. 2007, 20010 and 2013 were in the $40 with many options to choose from but this time there was only one. Well, one that I'd actually stay at. I wasn't about to choose just any hotel.

Just extrapolating the trendline at WDW, WHAT entertainment has been ADDED recently at the MK, We all have lots of examples of what was taken away...
MK hasn't lost that much...DHS lost their parade AND Disney Channel Rocks without any replacement. Say what you will about Disney Channel Rocks but it was a show that employed four equity singers, 10-12 dancers, high production values, and replaced with nothing. They also lost Mulch, Sweat, and Shears. The only replacement for these three major entertainment offerings were two dance parties...

Absolutely agree, My point was that Disney at WDW keeps removing entertainment offerings and replacing them with nothing at all, Last year the ball got really rolling on entertainment cuts and shows no sign of slowing down.

I make a point of complaining about EVERY entertainment cut because even if it's not something I personally enjoy someone else DOES. The entertainment cuts really degrade the experience. The waiters in France always put on a good show even if the whistle was a bit annoying at times. What has replaced them?. To me at least a theme park is about more than rides.

2014 to 2015 have been boon years for Orlando tourism.

Most hotels, onsite and offsite, have seen their occupancy rates climb.

Offsite hotels have used this opportunity to increase rack rates, in many cases at rates faster than onsite hotels.

This works in Disney's favor, allowing them to offer less dramatic discounts while seeing their occupancy rates rebound to pre-recession levels.

You like to complain about everything. It's your thing.

I will agree that a lot has been removed from the studios recently but the same cannot be said for all of WDW. Things have been removed at EPCOT but there have been new acts brought in to replace them.

The waiters in France have not been removed. Serveur Amusant is still there performing 6 shows a day 5 days a week. Your arguments are weakened by your misinformation.

I think you will find that DIS is capitalizing as they go rather than on a attraction basis because if they were they would push the projects much faster so as to maximize the depreciation schedules. With a project taking 5 years and a 7 year depreciation schedule well...
What are you talking about, seven year depreciation schedule? Buildings and attractions depreciate over either 25 or 40 years.

Kind of a separate question, but intended to relate:

Recently while domestic development has come along, TWDC sank a TON of money into FP+/new generation technology. Independent of our opinion of how useful this technology has been, do we think that money can flow more freely now that that siphon has gone (and as a corollary, one they don't have to futz with Shanghai either, though it sounds like that may be a while)?
Since we're talking about a ten-year window, don't forget the Dream, Fantasy, and DCA. Most of the people in this community equate "investing in the parks" with "E-ticket rides that add to the list of attractions at Walt Disney World." CapEx has been happening in the Parks & Resorts segment, just not on the priorities that people would like to see money spent on.

Most industrial machinery depreciates over a 7 year schedule, Is it a building or is it a machine or are they capitalized separately ?
In their financial reports, Disney discloses that typical Parks & Resorts capital expenditures are depreciated over 25 to 40 years using the straight line method.

There might be capex from DHS's original opening (1989) that are still being depreciated. Star Tours and Tower of Terror (which opened a bit later) are examples of attractions where at least some of their costs might still be being depreciated.

MyMagic+ was unusual because Disney warned that these expenditures would depreciate much more rapidly.

Guys, fifth gate confirmed on The Onion!

http://www.theonion.com/article/disney-world-opens-new-ordeal-kingdom-family-meltd-52230

BAY LAKE, FL—Touting the new property’s wide variety of unique and imaginative attractions, representatives from the Walt Disney World Resort announced Monday the opening of Ordeal Kingdom, a new theme park specifically designed for full-scale family meltdowns.

Situated between Epcot and the Magic Kingdom, the 350-acre property reportedly incorporates many of the most aggravating elements of Disney’s other parks and expands them into a creative and fully immersive world of irritation, which is said to include the longest lines in the entire resort, a convoluted layout that is only depicted in indecipherable cartoon maps that are not to scale, and 150 percent higher prices. According to park director Jacob Bartlett, Ordeal Kingdom’s specialized combination of features will ensure a slowly building resentment among visiting families, eventually resulting in a dramatic public outburst followed by a silent walk back to the car.

“We’ve considered every detail to ensure parents and their kids have the heated argument of a lifetime,” said Bartlett, explaining that the park was split into five themed “lands,” including Fatigue Island and Hunger Lagoon, each of which can be reached by Mickey’s Congestion Junction Railway. “Whether it’s the sheer distance between rides or the unspecified bathroom locations, every aspect of the experience is guaranteed to ratchet up the tension until you and your family are screaming at each other and saying you should never have come in the first place.”

“No trip to Disney is complete without everyone in your party losing all emotional self-control,” Bartlett continued. “And at Ordeal Kingdom, we promise that all your wildest family blowups will come to life!”

According to Bartlett, considerable effort was devoted to crafting the park’s overall aesthetic, which emphasizes open, unshaded stretches of asphalt without any benches for resting. Additionally, no lockers have been provided anywhere on the grounds, encouraging guests to carry their bags and souvenirs around with them all day, often over stretches of quaint, uneven cobblestone.

Bartlett went on to add that the Disney FastPass service will be available in the new park, giving irritable visitors the opportunity to squabble over whether they wasted their no-wait ride selection too early in the day.

One of Ordeal Kingdom’s most popular attractions is expected to be Tarzan Adventure, a kid-friendly obstacle course that provides dozens of opportunities for parents to lose track of their children among twists and turns as they struggle to make their voices heard over loud jungle sound effects. Park officials explained that the design is intended to sow seeds of resentment toward whichever parent insisted that the attraction’s deliberately vague age requirements could be ignored, contributing to the eventual fiery altercation that officials expect to boil over at an understocked gift shop or a snack stand selling $11 soft pretzels.

“We provide the rides, games, and entertainment, and you do the rest—whether you opt to loudly belittle your spouse on the teacups ride or wait until you’re in your hotel room later that night to call your 8-year-old son an ungrateful little , Ordeal Kingdom is perfect for families of all kinds,” said Bartlett, raising his voice over the park’s theme song, which blares on a continuous loop from loudspeakers throughout the entire property. “Who knows? Maybe your family will have that special Disney shouting match as soon as you enter the park, right after you shell out 75 bucks for your daughter’s ticket only to have her scream right in your face that she hates you.”

Officials noted that Ordeal Kingdom also features live shows on five different stages, each one tailored to appeal exclusively to one gender and age group, with all shows occurring simultaneously once per day during lunchtime. In addition, the property hosts a number of three-hour-long parades throughout the day that can be viewed from designated obstructed viewpoints.

Furthermore, sources confirmed that numerous Disney characters, all from the 1985 movie The Black Cauldron, would be wandering the park for visitors to meet and take photos with.

“We want your family to have a one-of-a-kind experience while you’re here, which is why Disney employees will be on hand throughout the park to wish you ‘a magical day,’” said Bartlett, referring to the greeting that will begin to sound more and more like a taunt as the afternoon wears on. “Plus, as one final treat, you’ll find the parking lots completely unmarked, providing one last special opportunity for family members to cry, yell, and pitch a hysterical fit—regardless of how young or old they are—when it takes more than an hour to find the car!”

Added Bartlett, “Our goal is to leave every one of our guests with memories that will last a lifetime.”
