They need to be stopped.

Are they releasing every Disney animation in live action format?

Agreed.

Due to film competition, it seems comcast wants to get into the animation game now potentially adding a third animated studio to their mix under Universal (Laika, Illuminations, potentially Dreamworks). Will this affect Disney too much at the moment? Probably not but just noting while Disney may go into Live action these next few years, other studios are picking up animation.

Universal/Focus Features doesn't own Laika. Also, this is the third time Jeffrey has tried to sell DWA in as many years, let's not count the chickens before they hatch.

There is no way this deal makes sense, unless they are rid of Katz the minute the deal closes. Illumination can turn out quality movies at a fraction of the cost. Why add the fat that Katz brings. Is there really 3B worth of IP to mine?

Wonder if this has Speilberg's fingerprints on it.

Probably and Comcast probably also wants to get their hands on the Classic media library owned by Dreamworks(Rudolph, Frosty, Santa is coming to Town, etc are in that library)

Do you know what that would mean for Universal during Xmas time potentially having all those characters plus grinchmas? Money.

I wouldn't mind if Disney picked a few movies to remake and did a great job like Jungle Book but this is really too much. What really gets me is they have the gall to do a Genie movie which was talked about a while ago. I'm sorry, but it can't be done without Robin Williams and they shouldn't dare even try.

If Spielberg want DWA so badly, couldn't he ask his patrons at Reliance to buy it for him?

Their strategy is throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. They've made at least six of these "BRAND deposit" films and only two of them have been good/great. I understand the financial desire to remake these films and the creative opportunities they can present as show by Jungle Book or Pete's Dragon, but so many of these projects lack thoughtfulness or a worthwhile perspective from the creative teams involved.

Because Reliance is now under Amblin Partners (Dreamworks, Reliance, Eone, Participant. etc) who have a deal with Universal already. It would redundant. It would just be smarter for Universal to acquire it and now everything is where it should be.

Classic hasn't proved super valuable so far. But I can see the collection of IP being valuable...but 3B? I guess that would put them out of the running for TW and/or VIA. In that sense DWA has the most IP for the lowest price.

I still feel like Iger has one more acquisition left in him as well.

Dreamworks Animation is valued already at 2.3 billlion USD. So 3B would just be a little bonus to block competition.

Something about this whole leaking of the proposed acquisition seems fishy. Comcast doesn't really need DWA, especially at the price they're demanding. It's something of an open secret now in the LA animation community that Paramount Animation has become a dumpster fire operation that just can't get a film out the door. DWA may be using Comcast acquisition talks to extract a better deal from another suitor like Paramount.

(I agree that Bob would like to make another big deal, but Shanghai and ESPN have likely put the kibosh on anything at or above the magnitude of Pixar/Marvel/Lucas happening before he leaves.)

Paramount is having bigger problems than getting DWA.

Comcast needs another animation studio as it lacks kid friendly IPs and Illuminations can only do some much. DWA also already has a chinese animation show set up which Universal is trying to get into already which makes sense. We will know tomorrow as Comcast first quarter shareholders meeting is being held and I'm sure this will come up.

Comcast wants Dreamworks Animation so they can go Mano-e-Mano with Disney & Pixar.

Steve Burke was once being groomed for Eisner's replacement, was forced out, later got suckered into the Comcast bid for Disney has been hell bent on taking down the mouse since 2003/4.

This is about advancing NBC Universal/Comcast As a player and a giant "screw you" to Iger.
