Cant this be abused by Marriot? aka "trying hard not to get" and force them to bid higher..
I mean, noone wants to take a 450 Million hit for getting nothing.
Marriott wants the deal to go through. The $450M is a consolation prize if it doesn't. In major deals like this there are usually break up fees for both sides. If Marriott walked away they would owe something to Starwood too. If the deal fell through for some uncontrollable reason like failed regulatory approvals then both sides walk away without paying anything.

I really have to wonder what fans were begging for Orange Bird to come back?
Same reason why Americans got Duffy and Tsum-Tsums, the Japanese.

Orange Bird somehow ended up getting big in Japan and became a staple of Tokyo Disney's Orange Day merchandise. Add the fact that Orange Bird's a historical curiosity in Florida and it was easy to put him back here as a gesture to die-hards

You know what's funny?
Orange Bird is one character who needs to remain in the dustbin of history, All I'm gonna say is it was associated with a loathsome anti-LGBT advocate.

As to it's use in Japan well ok the bird does not come with the cultural loading it has in the US.

Just say her name....Anita Bryant. She appeared in ads with Orange Bird, until she was dropped in the late 1970's right around the time she started her "campaign"..

Which should make the good old Orange Bird, innocent of any evil doing shouldn't it! Some hang onto things for a very long time completely without sufficient knowledge of the situation. Anita was a very well liked celebrity until she started her "campaign". She lost it all after that. The punishment has been dealt out, no need to involve others that didn't have any knowledge of her standings on the topic until it was to late.

If you recall the Orange Bird was 'retired' at the same time because it was created FOR Anita's campaign.

Just ask LGBT folks especially those who were around for that campaign how they feel about the 'Orange Bird'. Some symbols just need to remain in the dustbin of history. In Japan the Orange Bird is simply a cute bird and has no cultural loading, the same is not true in the US.

Orange Bird didn't fall off until around 1987 when the relationship between Disney and the Florida Citrus Commission ended.

The relationship between Anita Bryant and the FCC ended before the 80's. This was ended due to her controversies and a call to boycott Florida OJ.
