I don't want to mean at all, but why are we discussing Ivan if it is not a threat to Florida yet? It is not expected to be anywhere NEAR the States at all for at least a few days. Calm down, and pray for the stregnth to make it thru Fances before you start flipping on Ivan. Remember Ivan could just dissolve before it hits Fla. So relax everyone, and pray!

Well, for one, it is a threat to Florida. We don't know when/where/if it'll hit, but that doesn't make it not a threat.

Also, there are probably a few people who have plans to visit WDW in the next few days/week, and they might, just might, be interested.

Call me crazy.

Well then I'll certainly stop discussing it if it bothers you.

Sorry.

For a little light reading, might I suggest looking up "Threat" and "Jeopardy" in the dictionary?

If people do not want the possibility of a hurrincane ruining their WDW vacation, they should plan a bit better and not travel here between August and November.

Ivan is just the NEXT storm out there....there will be several more hurricanes this year, most will be either blown to sea, or hit the coast somewhere between MEXICO and GREENLAND.

The fact that Florida has been hit by 3 already this year (Bonnie, Charley, Frances) is quite rare....let's not blow the next several hurricanes out of proportion.....when they start to pose a threat, we can get concerned.

again though, just in CASE ivan comes here,

I'm still searching for a Midwest, West-Coast, or Canadian WDWMagic member to give me a lift from whatever airport I end up at :D

I'm not too picky as to where I will go to avoid this little drizzle

 If you end up in Kentucky I'll give you a ride.

Welcome to the boards Shrike!

It doesn't bother me to discuss this topic. I say feel free to talk about it. Apparently many people do feel it's appropriate to discuss Ivan and his threat to Florida because this thread is 8 pages long.

I do feel that Ivan is a threat to the area. We don't really know where he'll strike or really if he'll strike. We do know that he is trying to threaten the area and that he should be watched. Any storm that could potentially harm Florida should be treated as a threat, imo.

Has anyone checked the latest NOAA 5-day track for Ivan? It's been shifted to the west a little more than earlier predictions so that more of Cuba gets hit. I think I'm happy about that. Maybe it will miss most of Florida that way. One can only hope.

I think the speck is just a little burned out on the hurricane talk. I am as well. Previous hurricane seasons have not been this bad, so discussions here (at least last year :) were under control. Now, since 2 storms have hit, everyone wants to keep insanely up-to-date on a hurricane that *might* pose a threat. After living through two of them, the hurricane discussions get tiring. Just look at the thread for Frances.. over 1000 posts. IMO that is slightly absurd, but there really isn't anything wrong about it.

Everyone understands that hurricanes are a concern. This year has been out of the ordinary, but that doesn't mean that we need (or want!) to pull out hair out at every hurricane that forms. Its just too much stress, especially for those of us that live in Florida. That being said, I suppose there's nothing wrong with wanting to discuss Ivan.. just don't get carried away with it. Especially with regards to posting every update on the storm track when the storm is almost a week out. IMO thats just overkill, but thats just me :)

Ok

For all of those coming to Orlando in September, on the attached map you will see the current Atlantic picture. You will see Frances, Ivan, and 4 more waves behind Ivan, all of which could become a hurricane.

I, for one, am thankful for all updates. As you can see, I live in New York and get tired of watching news channels replay the same storm footage. I've gotten much more info from these boards, from people like you in the thick of it. I'm sure that you're sick of this and I'm sorry that we can't get back to more fun topics. I hope that you and all you cherish stay safe.

I think a lot of the concern over Ivan is being brought about by the media. If I were in Florida, I would certainly be checking it out periodically. But many of the news outlets practically have it making landfall in Miami already.

For example, I was watching Fox about an hour ago and their graphic had it pointed directly at the tip of the Florida penninsula. On our local news about ten minutes ago, our local weather man had it pointed considerably further west, and the predicted track did not extent beyond Cuba. The forecasters at the National Hurricane Center have steadfastly refused to predict anything about its effects on United States so far, especially when Frances is still causing problems here. (They almost seem to be annoyed by the questions about Ivan.)

While those of you in Florida have every right to be concerned, the bottom line is that the news outlets' continued alarm about Ivan is simply an effort to keep you watching and buying newspapers as often as possible. Apparently, covering the continued suffering of those victimized by Charley no longer brings in ratings.

Sorry for my cinical veiw of this. I really do hope that Ivan misses everybody.

Three posible routes

I just watched the news here in Mexico, and they said that there are three possible routes: one going straight to South Florida, another one hitting Bahamas and then upper Florida, and another one going through Cuba, then the Peninsula of Yucatán *gulp* and then Texas.

Hopefully, it will weaken in the next days, but it´s already category 2 as I recall... :(

I think the 'straight to South Florida' route has just about been ruled out as of tonite. The straight to Yucatan, unfortunately, can't be ruled out. The latest track puts it south of Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic and curving towards Havana, then over the Keys. At this point, there aren't any troughs to buffer New Orleans from a direct hit. We'll just have to wait and see about this one; but folks my age know we're due for the 'big one'. Florida does not need any more of these things. Let's hope they are done for a few years.

I've decided to personally outlaw the local and national news outlets. They make their money on scaring people, plain and simple and while some of it is useful, the truth is that you really cannot predict with any certainty what any storm is going to do.

It's good to be prepared but causing a panic is a completly different thing and that is what the media has succeeded with their constant hurricane coverage.

I too hope that no one has to live through such a terrifying event ever again - especially so soon.

I for the life of me don't understand why it's so unfathomable that some people might be interested, but I'll not belabor the point.

Sorry to have intruded.

Take care.

Doesn't sharing a name with a hurricane stink?

My name's Ivan and for some reason I feel partially responsible;)

Anyways, I hope that this one dies down before too much.

Sincerely,

Ivan (-I-99-)

How about mine
