The Force Awakens - spoiler thread

My biggest disappointment was Captain Phasma. Such a great buildup with an excellent, underrated actor in the part - and then she gets maybe 4 minutes of screen time with no moments of badassery. I agree with a prior poster for suggesting she take on Finn in the raid on the cantina. Supposedly she will be back for Episode VIII - I imagine they'll amp up her presence now that she has some tangible bones to pick.

I really, really enjoyed the film and thought most everything worked. A few too many New Hope callbacks and I thought the tentacled aliens were way too obviously CGI, and that entire sequence felt like it was out of a different film (i.e. one of Abrams' Star Trek pictures).

Kylo Ren is an excellent villain, and anyone who complains that he isn't "threatening" or is "too whiny" maybe don't understand great character construction...

I also like the idea of Phasma fighting Finn and it probably wouldn't have been a problem for Gwendolen Christie since she has fight training from her time in Game of Thrones.

Kylo Ren getting his handed to him by an inexperienced Rey, added to the fact he acted like a spoiled child throughout the movie, made him a very weak villain in my eyes. Also, why would Han Solo's son be so unattractive? No resemblance at all!

Oh, you mean Kylo Ren maybe wasn't fighting at top condition after being shot by an explosive round to the hip?

Many are already theorizing that the people who don't like Kylo Ren's supposed "wimpiness" are generally men with similar insecurities.

If you don't think Adam Driver at all resembles a child born of Harrison Ford or Carrie Fischer, I don't know what to tell you. But I will say there's plenty of women who would disagree with your attractiveness assessment.

A comment born from having no other recourse in conversation. "You hate it because you're compensating." Just stop. That's ridiculous. He sucks, plain and simple. Maybe he could have pulled it off if the writers hadn't had him portrayed that way, but the cold hard fact is that Ren was a whiny little **** the entire movie.

As for attractiveness.... Yeah, this is Dark Side mysterious sexy.

We don't know that for sure. Rey Skywalker vs. Rey Solo will be a great debate topic while we wait 1 1/2 years for episode 8. They may want us to think she is a Skywalker, but the"he (Han) was the father you never had" line and Rey arriving just in time for to see Han die should not be overlooked. If Rey is a Solo, those two events will be strong emotional driver for Rey in the next two movies. Imagine her feelings towards Kylo the next time she confronts him knowing he killed their father and she never got the chance to know him.

That is a little too on the nose don't you think? If they were twins, given to Luke to train (and we know Ren was), don't you think the parents would recognize her? Please don't say that they wouldn't or that they are "keeping it a secret" because that is just weak.

Many think that Maz Kanata was a Yoda like character.

Many people are just silly then. She was nothing like Yoda. At all. Okay, maybe the height thing, but that's it. Yoda was a wise Jedi sage living in seclusion to hide and reflect on past mistakes made. Maz ran a smuggler's den and was not a force wielder of any kind. She showed little sage wisdom other than a keen intuition. The two characters couldn't have been more different. Those that think she was like Yoda are people that are new to the franchise and suddenly think they know all about it. I listened to two morons sitting in the theater yesterday yammering on about all sorts of things Star Wars and not one d**n thing they said was even close to accurate.

Who is she then? Luke's daughter? Wouldn't they recognize their niece?

I'd say she is completely unrelated to any of the main characters. People seem to have this burning need for her to be a Skywalker or Solo. I say she is neither. Nobody knows who she is. If she was one of their kids then they would have known it.

1. She was left when she was very young. I could show you a picture of my niece when she was 7 and then give you her class picture this year (she's 17) and you 100% couldn't pick her out.

2. I think Han and Leia did recognize her eventually, and that's why there was so much emotion between them.

GAHHH!!!

Yeah, I'm not seeing this film. I probably won't even rent it. Why? Because it was bad enough seeing Han Solo as an old man. Why would I pay to see a movie where one of my favorite characters gets offed? I don't care what the reason was. I don't care if that's what Harrison Ford has always wanted. (Dang, Harrison, why'd you let yourself go like that? You had the money. Walk down Hollywood Boulevard, and you trip over more plastic surgeons than you do the homeless. No excuse, dude). I don't care if it "served the story". Yeah right. You guys enjoy this flick, good for you, but I'd rather stay home and watch "Inside Out" again. May the Franchise be with you. :p

1) Kylo Ren was not a seasoned, trained Jedi. It was made very clear that his training was not complete.

2) Rey has combat experience, obvious from her experiences on Jakku.

3) Chewbacca shot Kylo Ren. Ren was not fighting at top capacity, physically or mentally.

4) Kylo Ren was fighting with emotional baggage that has yet to be revealed to the audience. "Spoiled" is a foolish way to describe things when all the information has yet to be presented.

5) Adam Driver is one of the best young actors in Hollywood.

6) You clearly do not know what you're talking about.

7) The fact that level of attractiveness is actually a valid critique in your eyes is just embarrassingly shallow.

I remember vividly walking to my Ram throwing air fist pumps excited to see this film early Friday morning. I got to the theatre without waiting, purchased some disgusting chicken tenders that all the ranch dressing in the world could not make edible and went to my seat. The seat by the way was one of those leather lounge ones, I highly recommend.

After twenty minutes of every Star Wars commercial currently in rotation and several forgetable trailers, the theatre went pitch black, like the power went out. People started mumbling when all of a sudden the green Lucasfilm banner pops up on the screen, and the theatre erupts. I don't know if this was how the film was supposed to start, but it was freaking awesome.

As for the film...

It didnt live up to the hype for me. People comparing it to any of the original trilogy should seek emergency medical treatment for a Star Wars hype induced concussion. I wonder how many pro football players wrote reviews?

This movie is a carefully crafted, safe, souless, edgeless Disney made blockbuster that will make over two billion dollars but years from now people will be scratching their heads when they realize they were just sucked in by hype, that the substance was controlled and people just took hits because it was a known, loved product.

Its not a bad movie though, but it does not have the magic Lucas gave his six films. It has Disney magic, and that is where it goes wrong. That is where it fails.

Two stars out of four.

1) They would know who she was. And WHY would they have left her?? If she was their other force sensitive child and they were already taking Ben to Luke then why, why, why would they have left her behind on a desert planet and only take Ben to Luke? That makes zero sense at all. "Sorry honey. We love Ben wayyyy more than you. We'll take Ben to Luke and you get to spend your life growing up on a hot as hell desert planet with no resources for food or basic needs. Good luck!" I will admit that she is the child of someone important. Otherwise they wouldn't play into her getting left as a child so much. (Which is exactly where people like you get the hair brained idea that she is someone else's child.)

2) Sorry, but no they didn't. As I said before, that is just plain weak. They would have said something to her about it if the story was stupid enough to go that route. Besides, they are force sensitive. They would have at least sensed her in the force.

This is something that I thing that I think some people might be missing. Kylo has power, but he seems very undisciplined. I don't recall him using any force powers during the light saber duel. He may not be able to fight and focus on using his powers at the same time.

I would give it 1/5, 2/10. I thought it was abysmal, but don't regret seeing it. There were so many plot holes and so much bad acting that I won't waste any time or money seeing the rest of them. Rey was great, and BB8 was good, but Solo, C3PO, and even Leia were just awful, like why did they bother bad. They don't explain anything well either...things that should have been explained in this episode were just left out there unanswered. I get that some things should carry over, but I got lost in the plot holes. I can't believe that Poe Dameron who obviously died in earlier scenes was back later in the movie and after reading why JJ rewrote the movie mid-movie, I'm actually angry. Kylo Ren was a complete and total loser as well, I don't even know how they can improve that mess. You can literally tell they spent more on marketing than they did on making sure the movie flowed properly...for all of the hype it was simply awful. If they hadn't over sold it in marketing, I probably would have liked it more. Wow, just so underwhelming. It's hard for me to say this as a Star Wars fan, but this movie is up there near the top of the list of worst movies I've seen this year. I expected it to be bad, but boy it was even worse than I could have imagined.
