The Force Awakens - spoiler thread

I am not sure where you saw the "uncredited writer" but IMDB and the movie credits list George as "based on characters created by".

Lucas said a lot of things about future movies at various points in time.
IMDB must have changed it because it said "(uncredited)" a few days ago. And, yeah, the movie gives Lucas character credit.

I found my answer about the characters. The new characters we see in the film (namely Rey) actually were in the screenplay drafts written by Michael Arndt.

Since Arndt's work was based on George Lucas's original stories, I think it is safe to say that these characters really were created by Lucas. That means that not all the elements of Lucas' original story treatments were thrown out.

Years ago, I read what was claimed to be leaked story treatments for episodes 7, 8, and 9. I remember reading in it that there would be a new weapon that would "dwarf" the Death Star. Those who saw the movie know what's in the film. So, either that treatment was indeed written by Lucas and parts were actually used in the movie, or the writers copied fan fiction.

The film is about to be nominated for Best Picture and has a strong chance for a Best Director nomination. It's a fantastic film.

The film has a story. It's just told during the proceedings of a two hour action scene.

Nice! I'll put it at the top of my list. It seemed like it was a movie high on action but low on the characters or story.

George Lucas likely had no real impact on the final product. He is given (correctly) the "Based on the characters created by...." credit, but the writing credit is solely Arndt, Kasdan, and Abrams. If Lucas had anything to do with the new characters or any story elements, he would have been given a "Story by...." credit.

Contrary to IMDB, which is easily edited by users (like Wikipedia), George Lucas was given no official story credit. Even Lucas admits that Disney threw out his story treatments.

God knows he definitely had nothing to do with the final screenplay. The dialogue is too believable.

I used to have such deep respect for George Lucas as a director after his original SW trilogy, THX-1138, and other films that he directed. Unfortunately once he created the newest trilogy that respect went right in the toilet. He nearly destroyed a franchise that has been near and dear to me since I was a child. I'm glad he had nothing to do with this movie. Not even creative consultant.

I respect him to a certain extent as an artist. He's clearly a good world builder, but he's such a poor writer and character builder. THX-1138 worked because of the neutrality of the world portrayed in that film, which played into his strengths as a writer.

I respect him very little for telling his fanbase, with his OT edits, that the original versions that we fell in love with are wrong and we shouldn't be fans of them. That's a horrible philosophy for him to have.

It's absolutely insulting.

Just back from viewing #2. Maybe because my expectations were adjusted, maybe because I watched it with my Kids, maybe it's the Christmas spirits but I enjoyed it much more this time.
probably because you can now expend the time enjoying the movie and not checking on the characters to "know them" ?
Also you can start to see the little details, cameos, easter eggs, references..etc..

Saw it in 3-D today and while it does not change my initial opinon, it is better in 3-D.

Some random thoughts...

Carrie Fisher- Did the guy who does voice overs for Westwood One football raido broadcasts dub her lines? Her voice work was terrible and in some instances needed subtitles. Plus she got big, not Amy Schumer plump but the years have not been kind.

Kylo Ren- Quite possibly the worst villan in a major release. An emo with parent issues. This guy is supposed to be the next Vader?

Rey- This character is pure Disney. All Rey is, is Elsa with a lightsaber. Disney is not stupid, bring in the female movie goers and you make billions.

Finn- How many times will he be shaking in the next movie? All I remember of him is the shaking and feeling sorry for himself. This is the new hero? Better yet this could be Lando's kid? At least he got the girl without a Colt 45.

Han- Loved Harrison Ford, what little magic from the original trilogy was from him and his exceptional performance.

Will probably see it on Imax.

Jimmy Thick- Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me...

So does anyone else think that Snoke is Darth Plagueis. Darth Plagueis learned to create life from the Force and created Anakin. Maybe he created Rey also and Rey was taken as a baby and hidden from him by his mother after birth. Now, this all sets up a very Spaceballish scene, Where Kylo says to Rey, "No,we are related, You are my Great Grandfathers Daughter". Or maybe, "Like me, you have no Father"

I have heard that speculation, but I highly doubt it will go in that direction. Correct me if I am wrong, but the only thing about Darth Plagueis hat is canon at this point is that Palpatine killed him. Yes, people can come back to like in Star Wars, but it seems unlikely.
