@donaldtoo I just wanted to say that it's really special how supportive you are of your DD and her vegan cooking. When I make a vegetarian dish that's amazing, most of my friends/family say things like "I wouldn't eat that" or "that would be delicious with some chicken in, then I'd eat it!!"

So good on you for being supportive, telling her it looks yummy, and knowing you, for eventually trying it. You're a good man.
Ugh, I get the same remarks. I stopped saying I am vegan. I just go with plant based. I think some people just associate politics with veganism. It is apolitical for me. I just prefer eating this way. I don't care what anyone else eats. Live and let live.

Anyone ever been to a beach in Cocoa Beach. We are considering a beach day when we go down in 2 weeks. Trying to figure out what beach to go to. There are 4 public access ones.
We did when our DD was little but I can’t remember the exact location. I know we walked down a path from our hotel. I will see if DH remembers and let you know. It was very nice.

I think what's important here is that people show some respect to others. One of my brothers is vegetarian (has been for many years), and I'm not a fan of some of the things he likes. However, if he makes something and explains to us what's in it, I always thank him for the effort he put into creating the dish. He knows I may not love it (I'll always try it), but he also knows that I at least respect his choices, even if different from mine.

He just got the promotion. It makes no sense and just as it seemed everything had fallen into place. There is no way he can get his old job back? Prayers that a door has opened somewhere for him.

His old job went to a good friend of ours, who Brian got hired years ago, who Brian trained. Plus - they hired a second person (a friend of the boss' son) to share duties. So yes, Brian's old job is now being done by two people.

I do not typically think this way, my first reaction is always to take personal responsibility, take any criticism to heart and learn from it for your next job, but I am actually not surprised this happened.

Remember I told you guys they weren't going to let him work for two months because they didn't want to have to give him benefits?

He kept applying anytime a position opened up with benefits. They promoted him to Club Level Manager (a job for which he had been the assistant manager years ago - working opposite schedule with the manager.) I thought this would be cake. He was excited and was cleaning things up, finding lost inventory in the stands, letting employees know there would be no BS (and his employees always love him more than his bosses.)

Last week was two back to back big events (the first like this since he took the position in the first week of July.) A busy soccer game and a busy football game. While I was in New Orleans, he was working 15 hour days for 4 or 5 days in a row. I worry when he does that because of what just happened with his eye. Diabetes is an opportunistic disease, and this job routinely runs his system down.

The night before the event, his boss called him into the office and reamed him. Something about not ordering enough turkeys, blah blah blah. There were leftover turkeys afterwards. They didn't run out of anything. They didn't have any incidents or issues.

Now, one of the other bosses had his girlfriend in mind for Brian's position, and outright expressed doubt Brian could handle the position when he got hired. That made me think there was a target on his back at that time.

That boss told Brian's boss that the events "weren't run up to standard."

And when they fired him, his boss said, "At least we never had to give you benefits." Seriously? WT..?

Swear words...

Got that covered!

I hope Brian will be able to find a position that appreciates him.

So do I. But he has been trying to leave that place for years, and it's been very, very difficult. He'll be 50 in 2 years. They want 25 year olds they can pay low salaries.

Well you could make some meals there to save some money.

I never thought of that, because we go there FOR Disney food. But it's definitely a good idea. Can make some special dishes like my pasta y fagioli!

I'm (almost) half wondering if he's just better off away from that company. It doesn't sound like they're the best company to work for.

Again, I was definitely worried when I saw he would still have these marathon weeks of crazy hours with the new position. It is not good for him. Even he has used the phrase "blessing in disguise" a few times already - assuming he lands on his feet. He left that place two years ago to go to Margaritaville for a reason (and that just turned out to be bad timing with the building being sold and a new mgmt company cleaning house.)

He's already got applications everywhere. He'll be applying for unemployment. He has a couple more checks coming. He's been enrolled in a study of diabetics for a few months now which gets him a small check every time he goes to check in. He's talking about starting his own cleaning company. He's basically open to anything. (Working for/with me really doesn't do us any good; it wouldn't increase the household income by what he used to bring in.) And there's a guy who books catering jobs who has already been notified, and will be putting him on jobs here and there. That's always been a fall back when he's out of work. So at least there will be a trickle. But this cycle for years now is hard in various ways. And he's in a weaker position going on interviews after losing a job just as season was picking up.

This really feels like a set-up. I just can't figure why they would want to do that in the first place. Otherwise, why wouldn't they offer him a different (even lesser) position for the season? Why wouldn't they sit him down and say, "OK, these were your first events. Here's what went right, and here's where you can improve." The next event is 8/31. Who is going to be trained that fast?

The cabins have a really nice kitchen. There is a cooktop. The microwave is convection. Never underestimate take out from the counter service of Trail's End. It is pretty good.

It would be hard for me to believe that it was done purposely. I think maybe the boss who wanted his girlfriend to do the job was a spiteful person. Probably found any excuse to get rid of him. And he said it was a good thing that health benefits hadn't kicked in yet???? What the heck? And was he using the health benefit against him? Isn't that illegal?

Well, here we go again. I hate making posts like this.

Brian got let go today. Yes, from the new position he just got promoted to. Benefits didn’t even kick in yet. (Ironically, if he’d kept his old position this wouldn’t have happened.)

He’s taking it pretty hard. I’m pretty concerned as well. He was already out of work for a couple of months with the eye surgery and was just catching up. I’m stretched thin after moving the store.

Considering canceling our little WDW trip in two weeks, although it actually wouldn’t save a whole lot since most of it was covered by Chase points. Still, seems kind of irresponsible.

Maybe just downsize the hotel or cut one day to have more points for meals, etc. I’ll check availability in the morning.
I am so sorry. I know how excited both of you were. I hope he finds something soon.

Good to know!

Options: keep as is, 3 nights in the cabin at $225 each, completely covered by points, new experience, bring the dog, have at least $100 more in points for I guess one nice meal.

Cut Sunday and just drive up to a La Quinta to be ready for earliest possible check-in on Monday (Labor Day.) Save $249 (incl tax) to use for meals. Since it’s only Sunday night to Wednesday afternoon, that pretty much covers most of it (especially if we take the cooking suggestion.) We have no Sunday park tix anyway. It was going to be a resort day. Bring dog.

Switch Sunday to All Star for $87, save about $150, but leave dog home.

Switch to the Port Orleans that takes dogs, save about $50 per night = $150 towards meals. No kitchen.

Switch to our usual CBR, save just under $100 per night = $280. No dog.

Switch to AoA for $120, POP for $100, All Star Music for $87. Save up to $150 per night = $450. No dog. Significant $$ there, though.

Seconding the above, @Tony the Tigger . From an objective viewpoint here, I'm (almost) half wondering if he's just better off away from that company. It doesn't sound like they're the best company to work for. Still, sorry to hear that Brian lost his job, and also that it puts the both of you in tough financial shape.
This. I have to say, I am really hoping that it turns into a "best thing that happened" story.

Oh! Can also nix the whole thing and go first week of September for Food & Wine, possibly off site. We couldn’t do that before because of his work. Or can even go on my bday 8/31. OK, I have some “what if” planning to do after the dentist today lol.
I would switch dates and combine it with your birthday. Would you have a sitter for Kylie? It would save money by not taking her. That $87 a night sounds pretty good and would save a lot of money. You could save the extra points for another trip.

I say keep it, maybe do a little more cooking. And while you are cooking, I think B might want to look into lawyering up. By bringing up the benefits, that boss opens up a whole new avenue. Seriously, consult an attorney, because it sounds like this had to do more with the cost of insuring B, than his performance, and the turkey is just a thin veneer covering. Might not be, but unless I am missing something, it may be a pattern there.
