Some of you may remember that we have plans to see Savannah 12/ 26 and arrive at Atlanta on the afternoon of 12/27 and leave Atlanta the morning of 12/29
Here's the thing i just discovered. On 12/29 when I am scheduled to drive us (family of 3)from Atlanta all the way back to Brick NJ.... the current forecast calls for 70% chance of snow in Virginia and 60% chance of snow in Baltimore and NJ. Current prediction is for 3 to 5 inches. The following day Brick NJ's forecast is for snow showers w/ gradual clearing.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO???
Avoid white carp. Head further south.:D

We could leave a day earlier but we've never been to Atlanta and since I've only arranged for a 1/2 day on Wed. and a full day on Thurs....if we leave Thurs. to beat the snow it will be really disappointing.
If we stay an extra day and come back to NJ on Sat. instead of Fri. I wonder how the roads and traffic will be if the forecast was for snow all day Fri. and snow showers Sat. morning transitioning to clearing skies?
Hmm.....decisions , decisions

I would stick to the plan but be ready for a slow and steady crawl on the road instead of driving the speed limit. If it does snow, the plows will be out in full force on the major roads like 1-95, and with that much snow in the forecast I'm sure they'll salt before the storm comes. If you wait until the next day, driving conditions will likely be worse because the snow would have time overnight to become ice. That said, drivers are ridiculous in snow, so you'll find yourself driving 10-20 miles per hour slower than you anticipate, depending on the conditions.

And who knows, it might not snow at all, or anywhere near as much! Either way you choose, I hope you have a wonderful vacation and a very safe trip!!

Just plan for the possibility of having to stop someplace in between Atlanta and NJ. Many times those forecasts are incorrect and also quite general in scope. The area you are driving in may have no snow at all. The further south you go the less reliable those snow forecasts are. Just go until you don't feel comfortable driving anymore. If you get to that find a place to stay and just chill.

The only real concern I would have is if you are leaving from Atlanta and decide to go on I-81 through Pennsylvania that is all mountains, if your cutting across to hit I-95 you stand a better chance of not having problems, and on the plus side also there are a lot more accommodations in the event you need them. On the down side 95 has a lot more traffic.

This. Stick to the lowlands as much as possible. I've driven through the PA mountains in a snow storm, and while it was manageable it put me 2 hours behind schedule and parts of the drive were terrifying (like when you're driving over a bridge over a huge gorge and the road is slippery). I'm from California originally, so I'm a pretty big baby when it comes to driving in the snow. More traffic, and more cops on 1-95, but less snow and terror.

I will say though, even if it doesn't snow, do yourself a favor and drive no more than 5 miles over the speed limit. I've driven between NC and NJ a million times, and there are cops hiding EVERYWHERE on 1-95.

In all seriousness, avoid driving in heavy snow. Stay an extra day if you can, and listen for news on road conditions. While that much snow is no biggie to us in Chicagoland, it could be crippling in the south.

I think I'm going to book a hotel in Fredericksburg VA for Fri. night.
So Fri. morning leave Atlanta and travel 590 miles to Fredericksburg VA
Sat. morning leave Fredericksburg VA and travel the remaining 253 miles to Brick NJ
*
I can just put that in place and then cancel it if the weather forecast changes
Opinions anyone?

I've done this before!! Fredericksburg is a nice area to stay for the night, especially to avoid snow. This is on the approach to a heavy traffic area though, so you'll either need to leave pretty early in the morning or you'll have a very slow start.

I was stationed at Fort Bragg in NC and Fort Dix NJ at the same time, traveling back and forth between them to train soldiers for deployment. We had Snowpocolypse in NJ one week I was there. It was 8-10 inches of snow every day, and total white out conditions most of the time, but we were still expected to work. In order to get to our work building, we had to bundle up and hold hands as we walked so nobody got lost. It was a full blown expedition to get to the chow hall for dinner. We kept asking for a snow day, and kept being told no.

Fast forward to a week later and I'm down in NC. We had a really light dusting of snow. I think they said it was around half an inch, but it stuck to the pavement. They gave us three snow days right in a row for that half inch and almost all the local businesses were closed.

It's amazing how differently snow is handled in the South :hilarious::hilarious:

It was a margarita at the Fantasmic dessert show. You get a choice of this one or a non-alcoholic juice drink. We chose these! They were really good and strong which was good since it was freezing watching the show! Lol The cups flash a couple of different sequences. Good souvenir!

I've been watching the wait times all morning paired up with my touring plan and I think we're going to be okay. I will say though that I am FLOORED at how many people are waiting in the standby lines when there are available fast passes for some of these attractions.

Like you can grab a fastpass for Pooh right now or you can wait for 30+ minutes in the queue.

No matter how anyone rationalizes it, it is so unfair that my son has to work both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Groceries store do not need to be open on the holidays. When is my son supposed to celebrate Christmas? The world sure has gotten stupid, and greedy in so many ways. My blood pressure is probably sky high at the moment, after my son just broke this news to me.
