I wore an ugly uniform. Boys nany pants and polo but it wasn't public school. Both my DD and I are beyond conservativeGood grief, Charlie Brown! I think the best thing is for online courses, so that no one will see what your outfit du jour will be!
(When I was in grammar school, we had uggo uniforms and we all hated them--the nuns picked them out . . .). In (public) high school, I was ecstatic to wear the latest styles, but we did have restrictions on skirt length, no jeans, etc., but it was basically more common sense rules. Plus, my parents would never let me go to school if I was not dressed appropriately.
I can see that sometimes they have to go slightly overboard to prevent major problems. I don't really know the type of clothing you're talking about, and I surely to do not think your daughter is flaunting anything, however, the thing that I found the hardest to do is remember what pubescent boys and girls are affected by with the hormone changes that they are going through. Puberty isn't an automatic kick into self control and good judgement when it comes to natural instincts.Well, I would never let my kids wear anything inappropriate for sure...but there IS a double standard when it comes to dress codes. Those examples I listed were only for girls...boys would wear tank tops, and shorts that weren't as long. And shorter shirts. They couldn't wear hats, and no explicit things on their tshirts...but a playboy bunny was acceptable. There's nothing inappropriate about a girl wearing a tanktop when it's hot outside as long as everything is covered. My daughter loved sundresses and up until this past year, I could not get her in pants. Dresses every day....in the winter, we just popped a plain white long sleeved shirt under the dress and a pair of leggings so she'd stay warm, but when it was warm out, she could just wear the little strappy dress...not at all promiscuous or inappropriate, but it would not have been allowed in my school. Now, when it's hot, she has some shorts...they aren't booty shorts or anything, but they certainly don't pass her fingertips...I don't see anything wrong with them. But I don't need someone else to tell me what is inappropriate.
I'm sure we all have. My father was a truck driver and later the manager of a trucking company. We lived right next door in a company house. I was over there constantly. The language I heard would curl your hair and my father was as much involved in those conversations as anyone. However, looking back, I do not recall those words ever being said in our house or in front of my mother or in any mixed company. Words themselves mean nothing really, they are just words. When and how they are used defines culture, class and respectability, in my opinion. This reminds me of something that one of my high school teachers shared with us. She said that people who continually use "cuss words" in their conversations are either too ignorant, or too lazy, to come up with more creative, descriptive words. Quite frankly, I think I've fallen into both of those camps, at one point or another.![]()
I agree, there is a double standard. Thankfully, I went to school in an area where the policy was fairly equal. Both boys and girls had to have fingertip length shorts (never an issue for me; my shorts look very short but are always fingertip length because I'm short), boys weren't allowed to wear tanks at all, girls could as long as the straps were three fingers wide. I used to get around that policy with a shrug or cardigan over the shirt; they said nothing as long as it was on. Actually, where I lived, it was usually the boys getting in trouble, usually because they wore a tank top or their pants were hanging too low. In middle and high school, you had to wear your gym uniform if your clothing was inappropriate. Good deterent; no one wanted to wear their gym uniforms.Well, I would never let my kids wear anything inappropriate for sure...but there IS a double standard when it comes to dress codes. There are always exceptions to the rules
I have a very large vocabulary of "smut mouth" phrases . The trick is knowing when to use them. Generally they are dragged out when trying to fix cars.
