Today I made dining reservations for my Disneyland trip next week. I wasn't going to do that this trip, but I changed my mind. I have a WOC dining Package for Carthage Circle on Wednesday, and one for Fantasmic at Cafe Orleans on Friday. I am treating myself, since this is my birthday trip. My birthday is next Monday. Has anyone ever had the Dining Package at Carthay Circle? The food menu looks different than when I ate there a few years back. Hoping it isn't too spicy.

I'm not sure what part of the US they are talking about. I went to schools over 60 years ago, my kids in the 80's & 90's, my grandchildren now and none have ever had to have a uniform. There are some but those are "private" schools or religious based schools. Those have had this situation for years. I spent my first 9 years in Catholic Schools and the only one that had a dress code (other then modesty type restrictions) and that was my first year in high school. They do have codes in that body parts have to be covered, but, there is nothing that isn't just normal civilization requirements.
I was telling her the specific dress code from my school in my home town. We weren't allowed to wear anything shorter than past the finger tips when standing straight, if we wore anything sleeveless, it had to have straps at least 3 inches wide...no tank tops or spaghetti straps. No belly shirts...if you lifted your arms up over your head, your entire stomach had to still be covered. Spandex was only acceptable for P.E. and still had to meet length requirements. No logos depicting firearms, erotic things, swear words, violence...I was actually made to change my shirt one day when I wore a tshirt that was political and showed a cartoon cat's rear end. It was considered inappropriate, though I suspect that was mostly because the principal didn't like me, and I don't think he understood the message on the tshirt, so he didn't know if it was appropriate or not and decided to make me cover up anyway. He wasn't a very bright man. No hats allowed inside, I want to say there was something about hair dye and piercings...like...hair dye had to be natural colors or something, and no piercings besides ears? And I've seen news articles from the US about kids getting expelled for having corn rows, or mohawks because it's "distracting". Even in college I had a professor who told me not to wear anything with a print or glitter/sequins on it to his class because he was distracted trying to read text on my shirt, or distracted by the bling. Never had a uniform, but dress code and uniform aren't synonymous. How lucky were your kids and grandkids to never have their clothing choices questioned! That's great! I wish ours had been more like that...here it's never been an issue.

Dress codes? We don't really even HAVE a dress code here that I know of. I told DD once that most of the things she wears wouldn't be allowed in the US at school...shorts or skirts that don't come down past the fingertips, tank tops with less than 3 inch wide straps, etc...DD is a girly girl, so she never wanted to wear pants up until this year, and without airco in the schools, kids wear short shorts and tank tops when it's warm. She was so shocked that that's even a thing.
So far this week has been a mixed bag. There was another incident yesterday, but we did talk to the teacher and we worked some things out. And today he had a really great day...he was really excited because he was the only kid in his year who was placed in the plus group for language. He's thrilled. And yesterday he was put in the plus group for math, but there are at least a couple of other kids in that group. So yay.
We don't have much of a dress code. No booty shorts, no ripped clothing, no exposed belly buttons, no flip flops and no nasty words or sayings on clothing. I've seen a few girls show up in jammies and slippers and nothing was said. Even with our relaxed rules my friend's daughter got sent home 7 times last year

Well DS FINALLY had a good day today. I'm so relieved!! He is still complaining about the noise in the classroom, but at least he did not get bullied today. And he was super excited as he was the only one in his grade to be placed in the plus group for language. I was not really enthusiastic when he said that they weren't actually going to give him the plus materials, but he has to take the plus tests, but HE's happy, so I guess that's what counts. The reasoning is that if he has the plus materials, they have to have a teacher for it, and since he's the ONLY student who qualifies in 5th grade, they don't have the space and teacher to spare for only one kid. They'd have to take up a different classroom and provide a separate teacher, just for him for language. But I asked some questions, and the plus test is the same test, but with an extra page at the end for plus kids, and that page doesn't count towards his grade, so basically it's just busy work for kids who work faster so they aren't sitting doing nothing while all the other kids are finishing the regular test.
DD is confused...her teacher doesn't do plus groups, but the computer program they have for reading comprehension still has her in group C, while her class is doing B. (A is for 4th grade, B is for 5th, C is for 6th, but she has been working a year ahead, so she did C already last year) But the teacher set the instructions for B, so the instructions for the B section don't match the questions for the C questions, so she can't do her reading comprehension homework because she's still set up to do C but it's different stories and she's got C questions for B stories. It's basically like...you're reading a story about heath care, and it's asking you a question about fire safety. And they haven't found the materials for her Spanish yet since the move, so for now she has to help the teacher with the English lesson...same with DS. He asked the teacher yesterday what he will be doing during English lessons and she said they haven't figured that out yet...for now, he can just help them because his English might be better than theirs.
May the rest of the year be just as good. xoxo

I might have misunderstood the meat of this discussion. They still have social standards that are required when residing in a civilized circle. I was thinking about the standard uniform type of dress codes like little soldiers in a classroom. There were no specific dress codes in the schools that I attended because our parents established our dress codes. There was no need to regulate what wasn't happening anyway. My girls knew that there would be hell to pay if they went to school with less then respectable attire. School dress codes (other then uniforms) came into existence because parents didn't do their job and kids started to wear obscene, violent, sexually suggestive, etc. items.

It is bad enough that we cannot go to a place like WDW and not constantly hear the "F" word bantered about with the same regularity as the words 'and' or 'the'. We have fostered a generation or two of no class kids that do not know right from wrong, and we are starting to feel the affects of that in a more serious level. It's alarming and I can only hope that the pendulum swings back to the center soon. I know that sounds much the same as "and stay off my lawn", but, it is a much more basic trend and it worries me.

I once used the "F" word in front of my Father. I didn't even know what it meant, but, for a 10 year old it sounded pretty cool. I'd heard grownups using it. I got backhanded so hard I can still feel the sting on occasion, however, I never said it in mixed company again before or after I knew what it meant.

Languages evolve. There are plenty of words that we use regularly that started out as extremely vulgar. Not to mention words that are vulgar to us that are commonplace in other countries and vice versa.

Well, I think people still have to pick their audience if they use (questionable) words. I can give you an example of this, that just happened last week. One of my colleagues was at his desk and blurted out an expletive in frustration. over something he was working on. He didn't yell it out, he just said it. (No one from the public was there at the time--just internal employees within earshot.) We all understood that he was under pressure.

However, it didn't fly with one of the chiefs of the division who also heard it, and he spoke to the guy about it. The message he received from the discussion with the chief was that we are all representing a major hospital, we are professional, and we need to conduct ourselves accordingly.

Thanks. After posting about my 2 dining reservations, I got an invite for breakfast at Steakhouse 55 for Monday morning, which is my birthday. It will be a great beginning to my trip. The invite comes from a good friend of mine and it will be so nice to see her and her husband.

Spanish is one of these countries where simple words like "(polla)" can be a direct insult in Spain, but be a normal word in Colombia for example.

An insult in Mexico is a compliment in Paraguay as well...

Its pretty complicated lol.

I've done the dining package at the Carthay many times. The menu changes seasonally. Last time I did the package the burger wasn't an option which is sad, that was a great burger. The only thing I've had there that was super spicy was the firecracker duck wings, they are good and I like spicy food, but I can only eat one or two. When I did the package in July I had a tri-tip steak that was really nice and hubs had the salmon. The Carthay used to have its own viewing area but in July we were put in a viewing area that was for all dinner packages, it may have been a fluke though. We still got a great spot, but it was a little odd since we have done the Carthay package a lot and always had our own section for that restaurant.

We love eating at Cafe Orleans, but I've never done the dining package there. It is new for them to have the package, I think because the River Belle is closed for refurbishment. We did the dining package for Fantasmic at Blue Bayou and I like getting the dining package for Fantasmic the viewing area is front and center.

I really enjoy Steakhouse 55 for dinner and I have looked and been tempted by the breakfast menu there. I have heard the breakfast is excellent so enjoy!

Thanks gang, I saw y'all's recent alerts, and I'm sorry I haven't responded sooner.
With all the pain further south, I just haven't "felt it" to be on the thread too much. We've made donations, wish we were in a position to do more. The rain has pretty much stopped, but, the flooding is still, of course, occurring.
I know I posted at some point over the weekend that we were fine. Lost some shingles from the roof, lots of rain, but nothin' too crazy. We've had many thunderstorms over the years in our area that have been way worse. Monday got partly cloudy/sunny for us in the afternoon, and even all 7 of the low water crossings on the backroad portion of my commute to the office had no water over them. It was pretty sunny all day here today, although, probably, long gone are my beloved 100+ degree temps... :( ;)

I've, obviously (little green light) been here quite a bit, but, I've been mostly buzzing through TRs to keep my mind off certain things.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and prayers for all affected here in Texas.
Remember, those in Louisiana, and maybe a few other states, may need them, as well.

Continued prayers to ALL affected by this catastrophe.

Anyway gang, thanks again...!

Like the words that are censored here. ***** may not mean ******* to us in the states because it means ****** in other places.

I just put in asterisks, insert your own words. :joyfull:

I suppose, but, language doesn't have to be crude. Many words are quite normal now, but, not everything at any time is appropriate, evolution or not. It's like a bunch of children doing or saying things for the shock value. It just lacks in any class or self respect, in my opinion.

My daughters use the word quite often, but, when it fits appropriately. (that's the evolved part) Not used like a descriptive adjective every other word. To me that just sounds childish and ignorant. Many powerful things can be said without involving things considered to be smut.

From the pictures I've seen, your daughter is one of the lucky ones and her house likely will not be a priority. Especially with a temporary patch. Some peoples whole homes have been ripped apart or completely flooded.

I don't know if I'd say my DD was lucky. Our whole town is still a mess just a very functional mess a month later. I was more fortunate than she was, I only lost a patio set and some downed branches from my 75 year old tree but it still stands proudly and none of those branches squished my Gazebo when they fell.

They were working on her roof today. She found out they were coming when she was awakened by the roofers cutting out her ceiling from the roof. She has a cathedral ceiling in her livingroom where one of the two branches landed. Branches easily 18 inches across. Hole(s) both maybe 3' x 4' Its been interesting.
