That what you get when the parents are ATM's for their kids. They are never taught that they have to earn their keep. I would have cleaned a driveway with a teaspoon for that kind of money. They just need to hire somebody with a pickup and a plow to at least take out the bulk of the snow. Set it up so that they show up every time without having to be called. It would save a lot of anxiety.
Thanks, I'm giving serious thought to moving out of this ice box!

OK question about bread. If you look back decades and decades ago people had bread boxes that they put loaves of bread in. Anyone know what that was about. I know one of my Grans had one.

Back in the day, my grandma used one to keep the bugs out. Houses weren't as tightly build as they are today. We lived in a house that had a dirt basement.

Here you go -- some different styles of Stabilicers at L L Bean -- (depending upon conditions in winter, I've used them--I have two different kinds for different conditions): Also a note of caution: do NOT ever wear these indoors on a floor--you will slide!! They're for outdoor gripping only.

I have a better solution... live where there is no ice or snow. It's infinitely cheaper as well.

In Colorado, you think they would need their pot money. I remember a couple winters ago when Boston got 100 inches of snow (we only got 70) shoveling/snow blowing 4 or 5 driveways almost every storm.

Yes, I went there.
I know, but maybe everyone is so strung out here, they can only think about where their next joint, or goodies will come from. It seems stealing is easier thank working. Our crime rate is going through the roof due to drugs.

Your brother sounds like a piece of work, but its your brother so you have to love him. That's the family rule I guess. But sometimes we don't have to like them right! ;)
No, you have to love your children, everyone else is open game. You do for your own benefit tolerate others but love, or even like is a flexible situation. You can even love your children but not particularly like them. It's a complex game.

It is a different world though than most of us are brought up in so I guess I can't really wrap my brain around all that. I was brought up in a upper class town but most were not really affluent though that has changed now but there were the families that were affluent. My folks were more upper middle class I guess. My Sis and I never wanted for anything but inturn we were not raised to ask for everything and I got that more than my Sis.

Her friends were mostly from the top tier families. These kids travelled the world from young, had busy social parents, they belong to the club. They were not driving the kids to work or letting work interfere with their daily life or travel. Nor were they tolerant of petty low level managers messing with their kids when they did have jobs. At best their job was to be educated, do well and get into a high level University. They will graduate with a degree likely chosen for them and have a career path well set and likely a trust fund that will kick in.

It is just a different world than most of us dabble our toes into. I look at my Sis DD. She doesn't have cash. She has both a debit card and credit card in her wallet. She had a nanny, they have 'help' to do the chores and a guy that takes care of the outside and fixes what needs to be attended to. Yet they are wildly generous people and are always on some committee for the betterment of something....Both of our DD had the entire collection of American Dolls through there are more these days. My niece when she outgrew them took them to a woman's shelter and gave each of the girl children staying there their choice of an American Doll. The rest left behind for future shelter kids. Now I also know what you are saying, some of these kids ya just want to knock upside their heads, but I have that feeling no matter what family income level they come from there is the annoying kids.
We were brought up by the principal, that if you don't work, you don't eat. We always had food, but had chores to do, followed by a job. Then University.

I do sugar free cool whip mixed with non-dairy yogurt, or mixed with chocolate, strawberry or vanilla protein powder, or mixed with that new(ish) peanut butter powder. Sometimes throw in some banana, etc. Almost every night or if I wake up in the middle of the night.
That sounds great, I've seen the peanut butter powder, and wondered what you could do with it. Sounds yummy to me. Thanks.

I used to shovel the neighbors' driveways & paths for $5 per house back in the late 70's/early 80's. (around ages 9 to 14 or so.) There were 3 "regulars" who counted on me (after I did my own house) and would usually do an extra 1 or 2.

And that is one of several wintry reasons I now live in south Florida!

Others include:

driving on ice
driving on black ice
driving on icy bridges
driving in blizzards on the NJ Turnpike after the Governor declares it's illegal to be on the Turnpike in the blizzard, and having to "Dukes of Hazzard" my way through a snow bank created by the plow at my designated exit, fingers-crossed, and the T-bird made it!

just being cold. just sitting in a cold car before it warms up. freezing to do any little chore - run to the store, take out the garbage cans, bring in the garbage cans. also cold, wet gloves. cold, wet socks. taking boots on and off. boo.

I saw no reason to continue such madness LOL.
I agree, to all of the above. Living anywhere cold is complete madness!

I remember seeing called Stabilicers at a few sporting goods places. That may be a good places to start. I'm not sure if I saw them at Cabella's or Gander Mountain. Me I stay inside when it's icy.
Me too, except I tripped over my kitchen sink rug and took a bad spill inside. I'm thinking I need to move soon. We have tile over a cement floor. It get's really hard when you just go splat!
