It has now been 30 years that we have being going out to dinner for Thanksgiving. I was married only a few years, my Sis in law school, my Mom was a teacher and worked the Wednesday before when she said Uncle. While I did enjoy Thanksgiving dinner at home it was so much work. Days before prepping. Up early to get bird in and all the sides that go with it. The pots and pans and all the dishes. Then the clean up. Just crazy.

And no matter where we had Thanksgiving the 'work' and clean up and shopping wasn't shared equally. While I love hearing of all the families that enjoy all the cooking and family meal time I just won't and glad my Mom decades ago said no more. We get to choose our meat and have upto 24 side dishes along with it. I can order any wine I wish. When we are done my Mom leaves a massive TIP (that they often come back to make sure she didn't make an error and she explains it is her Thank you for not having to do this) and we push our chairs in and leave all the mess behind, go back to her home and have dessert-from the local bakery. It is a lovely tradition.

For me, it's not so much the work, prep, cleanup, etc. involved, but when my parents passed away years ago, at least my siblings were still around. So we all would have dinner at my place or my sister's. But then my brothers both moved away, so it was just my sister, myself and hubby. It just wasn't the same at that point, and I kept frustrating myself to "recreate" the sort of idyllic, Norman Rockwell family tradition portrait.

Finally, I gave in to the fact that it would never be the same without my parents and brothers to join us, so I suggested to hubby and my sister that we just go out to eat, and create a "new" tradition. It was awkward the first time we did it, but now we love it. And, we often don't have turkey, either. We've had prime rib, lobster, and other delicious entrees the past few years! :hungry: ;)

White Christmas is my favorite Classic

My kids are on a different page, Elf is DD favorite while DS is Christmas Story.
Mine is It's A Wonderful Life. I'll only watch it in black and white. My other favorite is the Muppets Christmas Carol. We have a boc of Christmas movies but no matter how busy we are we always watch those 2 together as a family. Now where did I put the box of holiday movies? Better go look for it this weekend.

Me, I love to read and reread Erma Bombeck books. I can relate and continue to make me laugh.

Never go to a doctor whose office plants have died.

When your mother asks, "Do you want a piece of advice?" it is a mere formality. It doesn't matter if you answer yes or no. You're going to get it anyway.

Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the 'Titanic' who waved off the dessert cart.

Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence.

Thanks to my mother, not a single cardboard box has found its way back into society. We receive gifts in boxes from stores that went out of business twenty years ago.

I think it's time we women stopped carrying supplies for the entire family. If children don't have room to carry their own toys, if men don't have pockets in their pants, tougho.

I never leaf through a copy of National Geographic without realizing how lucky we are to live in a society where it is traditional to wear clothes.

:inlove:

Ha! Thank you for those early morning chuckles, here. I haven't thought about Erma Bombeck in years . . . and she was hysterical. My mother loved her humor, too!!

Happy farm market Saturday. I really don't need anything but I have to return egg cartons and maybe I'll luck into a few things I didn't get yesterday. I'm also going to grab a few things for the holidays like disposable pans. I'm not the biggest fan of those but my dh likes them for when he runs the smoker. Have a great weekend everybody:joyfull:

Black and white is the only way to watch that movie. I also love the black and white versions of A Christmas Carol--especially the 1938 one.

In color, I like Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, and the 1964 version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

I never have any luck ordering clothes online. Not unless it's something I already have tried on or own. I think that's part of the reason I sew some of my clothes. I've never not had to alter a pattern. I'll admit it I'm weird all around:oops:

It's the same for all of us. Sizing is very inconsistent. When I order online, I usually only order from stores that have a local store here, so I can return the item, without paying shipping. And I usually only order clothes when they're offering free shipping to my home as well.

I ordered pants from Kohl's last week (30% off coupon). That's because I knew what fit me. But for me, you can't get a 29 inseam pant anywhere unless by some miracle a store will have it.

That is my favorite as well. I first saw it when I was in Vietnam on Christmas Eve. The base where I was stationed was party central that night. Drunks everywhere, fools filling their mouths with lighter fluid and then lighting it as they spit it out along with "good will to all men" fist fights on every corner. I went inside and turned on Armed Forces Television and they were showing "It's a wonderful life." Never was anything more appropriate than that movie that night.
