Just a different time I guess.

That may be a big part of it. Back then, I know I never gave it much thought; when you're younger, you think you're invincible. There's some truth to that statement, as I watched many college-aged people lead some wild lives, and being healthy wasn't high on their list. ;) But for the most part, all of them came out unscathed.

I think the trend now is on healthier options. Even the fast-food places have come up with a few healthier items (I still wouldn't call it "health food" per se), but the choices for people without much money (college students or other low income groups) are somewhat better nowadays. At least, if nothing else, the "awareness" factor about nutrition is more prevalent across all age groups now.

When I was a kid... my mother used to give me tomatoes in my lunch box when I went to school. She would also include little shakers of salt and I would eat them like an apple. That was back in the days when they didn't taste like plastic. They were flavorful and sooooo good. Now they have spent so much time trying to make them last longer and tough enough to handle shipping... the flavor has gone away.

One of the very few things I like about summer, is that you can finally get fresh, great-tasting tomatoes from local farmers. The difference in taste between them and the winter hot-house variety is like night and day.

True story, without a word of exaggeration:

Two of the medications I take cause extreme dry mouth. Add to that, a stuffy nose, and central heating jacked up a few extra degrees ... and I ended up mouth-breathing for the past two nights.

This morning, my mouth was so dry that my tongue was literally stuck to the roof of my mouth. When the alarm woke me up at 6:30, did I think to take a swig of water first?
No, I did not. I just kind of wiggled my tongue around ... and ended up tearing most of the skin off the roof of my mouth.
Holy jumping it hurt. Still hurts! I'm going to have to put a bit of Oragel on it in order to fall asleep tonight.

Seriously hoping I'm a little smarter tomorrow morning. No guarantees though. ;)
I'm seldom at my best after only 3 1/2 hours sleep.

OMG . . . that is awful.

My DDs campus didn't have cheap food. Last year they got a small limited menu Wendy's. This year they are building a McDonalds. But neither are cheap. They are not close to the real town and they jack the prices up big time. She could pay almost double for a Wendy's meal as she did Chipotle. They had a lot of independent places, Mia Za's was Italian and she could get a bowl of very good spaghetti and a good size salad for about $7. The one thing I've noticed about college students is they don't drink soda the way students of yesteryear did. They are all carrying a container of water.

That's a positive trend about students not chugging as much soda anymore. That will save them thousands of useless calories over time. Water is best for everyone.

I wanted to comment about Wendy's. There is one in my area and I get a craving for it maybe 3 times a year. So I went there 2 weeks ago and was shocked by the prices (I thought this was a cheap, fast-food place, right?). The single burgers with cheese, lettuce and tomato were $4.49!!! Good grief. I don't know if it was just this particular franchise or what, but shoot me. I remember (many years ago) when places like Burger King had 50 cent burgers!! I know that Wendy's hasn't always been this highly priced. :jawdrop:

Dorms at my school are less than 10 years old. They built enough dorms that they guarantee housing for all freshman (not that all freshman use it...) and after that they guarantee housing to anyone who lived on campus the year before. There are some that move to apartments around the area, but most live on campus or live at home. Upperclassmen typically live in suites or apartments. The upside of getting an apartment is that they go on a lower meal plan, so they grocery shop and cook. Even ones who live in freshman dorms do at least some grocery shopping. The school even has shuttles on Saturday so that students who don't have cars can get there (though pretty much everyone has a car at my school...it's almost not an option unless you like being stuck there). And then those of us that live at home, of course, save money that way.

At the school where I'm taking Spanish, they have older dorms and while they don't "kick you out", most move to apartments in the area (and I know why; I've seen their dorms...no way). Still, they grocery shop and eat in a lot.

I think it might also just be the generation. I think all of us grew up in the beginnings of the health craze, so we're just wired a little differently. Personally, I have to be careful just because high cholesterol and diabetes run in my family, plus I cannot eat whatever I want and stay thin. Even in WDW, I have to alternate between eating fried food and not eating fried food, otherwise my system ends up so screwed up
They are building new dorms and remodeling old dorms now, but when I was there, Ohio State's dorms were awful! I was on the 11th floor and the elevator was constantly out of order (no wonder I stayed thin lol). I was lucky that you don't need a car at Ohio State, but I know it's a necessity at a lot of schools.

I was definitely not raised during any sort of health craze, although the area I grew up in didn't help. People still don't care there. I definitely eat better than I used to though, and my body doesn't like it when I only eat junk anymore. My last trip to WDW confirmed that, I had to detox on fruit and salad for a day about 3 days in. My stomach was not happy with me at all!

That's a good thing. Lord only knows what all that cherry coke did to my stomach!

Places like Chipotle would have been great to have when I was in school. It's not cheap necessarily, but I could have afforded it occasionally.

Disney's Oscar nods

Supporting actress--Meryl Streep (Into The Woods)
Costume--Maleficent and Into The Woods
Makeup--Guardians Of The Galaxy

Never saw Maleficent and Into the Woods

But Guardians....if you've seen the movie, you know why they got a best makeup nod. They should win for best visual effects. The movie got 5 nominations total. But seeing how its the Oscars, chances are a more serious movie will win.

You beat me. I was just about to post this.
Sadly, the Canadian Tar-jay experience was a pale imitation of the American version.

I was so excited when I heard they were coming; visited one of the first stores to open; and said, "never again".
As it was, I had a relative visiting from Calgary this fall, and she wanted to go. While the experience was a hundred-fold better than the first time, it was still a joke compared to the two Buffalo stores we usually frequent.

Target did not take the Canadian consumer seriously. They used our stores as the dumping ground for merchandise that did not sell south of the border. Consumers complained that shelves were never fully stocked, and the selection was sparse and outdated. For this, they deserve to go buh-bye.

If you don't value your customer, you won't have them for very long.

ETA - Just found this article on-line. It pretty much reiterates what I said - just better, with pics of empty shelves.

Pink slime, baby! :p (Actually, I can't say that Taco B. used that, but that's what immediately popped into my head from hearing about that mess last year . . .)

I think it "looks" like it not that they use it. Funny how different the texture in ground meat is and how different it is when cooked.

Pink slime is on a comeback though. After the Brouhaha they even had to shutter a plant. It is open again. I remember stickers on ground meat a while ago indicating there wasn't slime-ish stuff in there. I can't say I've seen that in a while, maybe since it was out of our minds maybe they just stopped labeling it as slime free.

I think both Wendy's (like Carl's Jr ) are more for Premium Burgers than the "Spam Cheap Burgers Everywhere" technique of McDonalds.
