I was on that road a few years ago in that stop and go section when I came the closest that I have ever been to watching my life flash before my eyes. I was stopped in a line and I happened to look in my rear view because I heard a noise back there. It seems that a flatbed truck loaded with giant rolls of steal (probably headed for car manufacturers) must have dozed off or something because he hit, at full speed, the back of a small car and proceeded to push it directly toward me. I even braced for the hit. At the last minute it kind of moved slightly to the right and just missed my car by inches. As it passed by me on my right, it was so close that I could see clearly the poor young lady that was in the car. I can't even describe her facial expression as the truck pushed her severely shortened car past me. Just as the front wheels of the truck got even with my passenger door, the truck started to climb up the back of the car flipping the truck over on it's side and pinched the car forward and spun it around in front of the truck coming to rest just a few feet from the front of the truck that was now laying on it's side. I looked behind me and only a few feet away from the back of my car was a giant roll of steel. It would have crushed my car had it fallen off the truck just a few seconds later.
I think I didn't stopped shaking for a week. I don't think the girl was injured seriously, but, I can only imagine how in shock she was. The front compartment of the car did not seem to have any damage at all. When I left there were hoards of people climbing up the truck to see what had happened to the driver. I would have stayed to help if there had been no one else there, but, armed with my limited knowledge of emergency procedures, it was better that I just moved out of the way.
