For this intern, I offered to talk to my manager about putting her on payroll. I told her I don't have that authority, but I would talk to my manager about it. My manager probably would have said yes too just because I asked. Instead, she sent me this really long text message that said "With all due respect" with was neither respectful nor professional.

Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise that she left, regardless of salary or no salary. Good grief . . .

Maryland has similar laws, but getting experience has been tough. The paid internships are hard to come by (for instance, Disney's program is very competitive), and students need experience, especially since a lot of degree programs require internships. Unpaid internships have very specific requirements and criteria they have to meet.

Just for fun, I investigated her Linked In profile. She got her Associates degree, switched from Business Administration to Human Resources Management. Then, she went to another public college in the southern part of the state. It looks like she was only there for one or two semesters before switching schools. She had a job in January that she worked for about a month. It seems like she bounces around and when she's not happy, goes someplace else.

My company is transitioning into a dual paid/unpaid HR internship program. We're going to interview lots of interns, and then good ones we'll offer paid internships, while students aren't as strong but want experience, we'll offer the unpaid internship. I talked to the owners and told them I really need an intern on Fridays, so we posted on several college websites for a paid intern to come in and work on Fridays. Our broker interns are paid on commission, same as professionals, and our Financial Advisor interns are dual paid/unpaid. We have quite a few Asian students who don't really care whether they get paid or not; they just need the experience. My company also prefers to hire from their internship program. I'm not sorry at all that I got experience from unpaid internships. It led to this paid position, and when I graduate, I'll have a year's worth of part time professional experience. Not bad at all.
I may be disagreed with here, but, in my mind the term "unpaid internship" is a fancy rich white businessman's name for slave labor. I find it abhorring that anyone would even consider it. Even unpaid, the intern does help out in many ways that otherwise the business has to pay someone else to do. Even minimum wage is less repulsive to me then to have generated a mindset that I will expose you to business, but, you will do it here for free. Yet, everything that you do will in some way or the other help make me richer. I find it immoral and wrong on so many levels I cannot even spell them all out.

Even done as a "fast-track" situation, it is still a disservice. Fast-tracking can be done while paying something to the person that is putting in the effort and the time and still has to survive. Sorry, I just find it terribly wrong and just another totally greed related move by businesses. If they don't hold up their end, then you do what will happen once in the work force anyway, you send them down the road. They will learn quickly to put effort in it because then they have something to lose. Remember the now famous phrase that we here so often today... When they pay me more, I will give them more effort? What do you really get for free. And if someone doesn't measure up to the standards required to get paid, then you have not only wasted their time, but, yours as well.

You and Yours, is a generic term in this post and not directed at anyone personally.

Oh dear lord, thank you for the voice of reason. I was just struggling with Figgy's description of the ground almonds and achote pepper (never heard of that one before!).

So buddy, I'll match your bacon and raise you some butter and/or sour cream, too!!! :hungry:
I'm sure I got the spelling wrong it's a bit spicy and a bit sweet. We got it at the farm market from a local vendor who has some rather interesting spices.

I used to love picking out cute outfits on picture day for my boys now it's stay away from my clothes I have to look cool:(
Boys, do not have "outfits". They do, or at least should, have clothes that fit in with the culture of that specific day. No wonder everyone is wandering around with a confused look on their faces.

It just brought back some nightmare thoughts of my high school days of Ivy League, pegged pants and bleeding madras shirts with penny loafers completing the look. But, at the time, it was cool and certainly not referred to as an outfit. :)

p.s. When the very occasional event dictated we wear a tie it was a strip of cloth about 3/4 of an inch wide. It had about the same amount of material as a current swimsuit for the girls.

Wow, you have to pay to go to concerts?! I've never heard of that for music concerts. Our choir and band concerts are free for all ages and anyone can come (although our district is probably smaller than yours). Our school has a ticket cost for plays and sporting events. If you had a fancy phone, you could facetime it or skype it for the people that can't go.
We don't charge either. We have two music concerts each year, one before Christmas break and one before Spring Break, and they ask for one donation per person for the local food pantry. Of course it's not required. I always donate more because I know some families who can't bring something.

@figmentfan423 That was a crazy Transit accident in NJ. How did it not stop! o_O
I have no clue. It's on every channel and very sad. I called somebody I know who works near by and it was heard from several blocks away. The whole area is jammed up. The traffic there is as bad if not worse than mid town Manhattan to start with. Nobody can get in or out of the area except for emergency vehicles
