Asian as in here for school. We also have Asian American students, but they care more about getting paid.

Yes, I can understand caring about being paid. Boy, I see where the owner likes his business model but oy what a horrible HR hiring pattern and practice. Hire lots of foreign Asian students that will work for free cause they are desparate for experience. I wouldn't want to explain that to a labor board. All they would need is one person to file a complaint with EEOCommission and uncover a hiring pattern like that especially when he hires lots of foreign minorities to work for free. Yikes. I can only imagine that would make EEOC radar ratchet up.

It's not really that they're desperate so much as they need the internship for their programs. A few of them I think can't get paid, which yes, is weird. I had to write an offer letter for one of them, and it was very specific what her program required from her. The downside is that their English isn't great,so that can get messy.

Like I said, I'm fine with the fact I did unpaid internships. I got experience, I got a flexible work schedule, and now I've got a job where I make more than minimum wage, plus I get a bonus at the end of the year. And my neighbor who is a head hunter said if I want something different come January, she can more easiky place me because I've got experience. I'm 100% fine.

She does not have a boring family!
Nope, and she's usually the butt of everyone's jokes. My dad started this thing when I was three or four years old when he would randomly say to me, "Let's laugh at Mom!" And we'd laugh. For no real reason. She has to deal with my sarcasm and sass on a regular basis ("Where's my grocery list?" "The Matrix"). Even my brother can dish it out to her. She's always said that there's a lot of laughter in our house; unfortunately, most of it is directed at her. :hilarious:

To Me, as you describe with lots of foreign Asian minorities working for him unpaid is a dicey HR practice at best. A pattern. It sounds at first blush a Human Resource nightmare. So many layers of interns of who doesn't get paid, who partially gets paid and who always gets paid. Add to that lots of minorities/foreign students out of an Asian ancestrory that don't get paid but Asian Americans do. Doesn't really matter if it is OK with any of them if a complaint is filed by just one then the whole pandora box gets opened. Research on an employee after they quit for not being paid is kinda a backwards paractice for the owners HR department. Most employers research candidates before the hire not once they quit. It is like he is trying to cover his tush after the fact. An angry ex unpaid intern is the type I'd fear that would spill to EEOC.

All foreign students on a visa are required to pass an English proficiency standard test to aquire a visa to study here or come from a school in their country that is taught in English, not one that just teaches english. As an example England, Ireland etc. do not have to sit for the test because English is their primary educational language too. The standard test must yield a certain score in reading, writing and spoken. It is a timed test and you must get an accepted score to pass and to be eligible for an education visa in the US. My DD is a University admissions advisor, has to verify foreign students proficiency in the English Language scores before they are allowed to formally apply to their university.

If these Interns English is the reason for the owner not paying Asian Interns that would have to be substantiated against the visa that got them into their University here in the first place. In court with an EEOC complaint likely a judge isn't going to go with an employers arbitrary view of ability over a national standard for an education visa and the University accepting them as to why the employer is not paying foreign Asian minorities interns. Nor explain why HR approved the hire in the first place. I'd love to read the corporate handbook policies on interns and the stand practices for payed, partially paid and paid. Likely why Disney pays them all.

She sounds like she has a thick skin. Lots of family dynamics to either laugh or cry about and she seems to mostly take it all in kind. I'd like to meet her someday. She sounds like an amazing role model.

Yeah, we went through this with the musicals. They were always free and even did a senior performance during the daytime hours. Space was not a problem or cost until high school when the students had lets say a little better skill level. That all changed as funding overall dipped. They now too charge but space isn't a problem on this level like it is on the high school level. Can you possibly get tickets (buy) from friends that are not going to use all of theirs? We found with things like graduation etc not everyone has extended family and they were will to turn over the extras to us.
You have to order the amount you need a couple of weeks before and any that are unsold the week before go to those that have requested extra on a lottery system

After finishing the mini everglades tour, We went to the cocodrile show. Where an expert explained more about alligators and the biggest danger to the ecosystem in the everglades.. including this individual.
dNu78eF.jpg

That was introduced by some exotic pet owner who threw the animal because it was getting so big. This guy eats eggs.. A LOT OF THEM.. OVER AND OVER, leaving nests decimated. And since has no predators.. they are decimating the alligator and many other species.

Also explained the importance and huge variety of snakes on the Everglades and surrounding areas.
And of course, safety on how to handle meeting a "danger noodle" in the wild.

Have a video!

After that, the classic photo with an Alligator. Not a fan of having these little guys being tossed and touched and with tape x_X

After that. We went to the store and I again bought some magnets.. and new glasses, because my old ones shattered when I was getting down from the Bus x_X.

Once we finished refreshing. We returned to the Bus to return to the Port of Miami to change buses.
The Bus graciously dropped us very close Miami Beach (2 blocks away). So we walked to check the famous South Beach zone.

Have a monstrous Panorama.

Once we cheked, viewed..etc.. we decided to bail towards the main street again (the sun was insane!, I was red as lobster and our skin was burning).
Plus we were hungry, so we decided to check some restaurants.

TIP for those who havent been to this area.. CHECK ALL RESTAURANT PRICES FIRST. We were dumb to sit down on the first restaurant on the line. And it had almost 20% price hike compared to the others a few blocks more to the north.
And they had very similar dishes.

uIJXs9K.jpg

Regardless of that.. the food was very nice and It was a lot. So I ended eating the same as dinner at the hotel.

This area is very pleasant. Lots of people partying.
We also got in the middle of a very interesting conversation between a very excited old man who was extremely thin.
And a muscular black man. Both of which seemed to have worked for the same company in the same city (Chicago).
It was weird to see the old man happily screaming "WHAAAAT?" YOU TOO????, I WORKED THERE TOO!". Because everyone was looking.
The wife and her daughters were unfazed and the Afroamerican man was also happy to share...
And thats it!.. After eating, we went to walk towards the north to see if we could get inside a famous old house. Unfortunately It was transformed into a luxury hotel/restaurant. And it had huge bouncers who were clear that it was for guests only. What a shame! As the building had decor very similar to Vizcaya House.

Anyway, We were drained and we decided to call an uber to get back to the hotel.
A very sympathetic man from Cuba was our driver. But there was some weird stories that were hard to believe lol.
Like he said he worked his butt off for years, and then now works as one of the top high ranking immigration officers for the government of Miami.
If thats true. He drives Uber because he gets bored and he worked so long he simply doesn't like to stay doing nothing.
I dont know, but he had a luxury style Lexus Suv. So his story was kinda convincing.

So after returning to the hotel. We put a lot of cream in our burned skin (lol) and we went to take a long nap.

After that we walked to check out the beach.
the zone is VERY pleasant. including a walking/running wooded street for pedestrians that is covered by tall trees giving shade. And the sea is right next to it.

I know the doc has always told us to eat yogurt with live cultures in it when taking antibiotics. It takes the edge off the tummy by keeping the good bacteria in check. Bets can't eat dairy so that is out.
Coconut, soy or almond yogurt the have live cultures would do the same thing. I like coconut and James likes the soy, the other 2 don't care one way or another. Which reminds me put in a batch of yogurt today:)
