What's wrong with a land line. Mine was up way before cell service after Sandy
Basically, it's because it's hard to hear it ringing when you are 10 miles away. I cannot speak for your land line service, but, what I paid for cell phone service was the same as I was paying for landline service. The cell phone system allowed me unlimited time to speak to my kids that were all long distance, additional charges, with the landline. So it was redundant for my needs. If I was away or I was home, it was with me, no need for extra voice mail or being attached to a wall, etc. I wanted to text with my girls, and was pretty envious of some of the other things that they could do with theirs, so it cost me twice as much as necessary again because of redundancy. And you know as well as I do the fact that you still had a landline after Sandy was because a random tree didn't fall on your connecting phone lines. Could have taken days to re-establish. Luck as well as equipment had a lot to do with that.

I didn't get a smart phone right away, in fact I resisted that until a couple of years ago. But, I have kicked myself ever since for not doing it sooner. I don't need a super high expense phone or one that can do parlor tricks and I think that is a huge waste of money, but, for the calls, texts and App usage that I do take part in, my basic smart phone is perfect and costs me about $70. per month including equipment replacement insurance. I did drop the landline about 6 years ago though and have never missed it at all.

I have to admit to being quite happily ignorant of how it all works though. I will probably go to my grave wondering how I can fly to California tomorrow and someone that doesn't know I did that can call my number and my phone rings over 3000 miles from home. How does it find me with the millions of cell phones that are out there. Never mind, don't tell me, I don't need to know, I'll just continue to think of it as magic.

I think I told this story before about my experience in the Sci Fi. I was on one of my solo trips, probably 2005 or so, I sat down and waited and waited and waited. Finally someone came around to take my order along with the order of the family of 5 sitting just in front of me. Again, we waited and waited and waited and eventually out came my lunch at the same time as my neighbors again. (should have caught on maybe). I had a cheeseburger and ice tea. Again waited half a lifetime for the check and when it did arrive it was for $140.00. It was a good cheeseburger, but, not that good. It turns out that the waitress had assumed that I was with the group in front and further assumed that I was paying for the whole thing. Why she did that is anyone guess. I wasn't even talking to them or looking their way. It took another half hour to get that straightened out. Needless to say, I haven't been back in there since then. I saw that loop of films so many times that I had memorized each one while waiting. I wonder if Disney has figured out yet that perhaps trying a little harder to get people in and out in a reasonable time, might increase revenue.
They should have. They are always looking for a "fast buck". lol

One of the most impressive things that I remember seeing when I first moved here in Cary, NC is that everywhere I looked along the streets, in the median and other places were rose bushes, mostly red roses. When combined with that huge amounts of blue, white and red flowering trees along side them, it is one pretty place to be. Secondary to that back in Vermont every spring there would be a fund raising drive that was done by selling Daffodils because we never saw any around there. Here they are used in field coverage at our interstate exits and entrances.
I love flowers, that sounds like a little piece of paradise.

It's only 6 pm and I'm awake. Body saying what the heck lady. Should stop looking at Fitbit
When we take our step counters, we look at them throughout the day. We get in a lot of steps, doing nothing. We pick the rooms farthest away from Artist's Pallet. I like a nice early morning walk. We share breakfast now. Neither one of us likes to much at any one meal. That gives us calories, for snacks!

Excuse me, but are you by any chance still living in 1999? ;)

No, I think it's probably more like 1989. You know, back when utilities had normal sounding names that meant something like New England Telephone, or Boston Gas Company, etc. Heck, I once lived in a town that you could pay your telephone bill at their office, and they even accepted cash for payment! There were nice people working at the counter who'd smile and address you by your first name, and they all spoke English, too! But, I digress . . . :p
