I'm curious to see how they do. There's no one here for them to practice their English on except me. We've warned them that in the US, they'll HAVE to speak English to everyone else because no one speaks Dutch and I think they are a bit nervous, but also excited. And they also know that if they get stuck, they can say it to us in Dutch and we'll translate. But this is really the first time they'll have tested their English skills. The last time we went, DS was only 2, so he was only making simple sentences even in Dutch and he wasn't much of a talker anyway. DD was 4 and could speak a bit in English, though not nearly fluently. We were in the US for 3 weeks that time and she picked up quite a bit, so now that she'll be 10 and she already speaks well and she learns quickly, I'm anxious to see how she speaks at the end of 4-5 weeks!! I think DS will pick up a lot in that time, but DD even more so just because she's older and has an affinity for languages.
perhaps they use the internet? skype? animee? tv shows?

When I was in the Netherlands (The Hague, Amsterdam, Utrecht, in the summer of '97) pretty much everyone seemed fluent in English. But maybe they learn it in school a little later, and I was just speaking to adults.

@Goofyernmost is your eye 100% yet? Do you have an appointment for the other one yet?
Thanks for asking! No, not completely. I went in for my one month follow up only to be told that I had a small infection on my Cornea. This is a bad time of year to be going to places like the VA. They are short handed and it is painfully slow. I had a 1pm appointment for Monday. I arrived at 12:30 and it was almost 4pm before I was seen. My blood pressure was on alert. I was given some antibiotic eye drops and told to come back in the next morning for a "quick" check to see if it was working. No hassle, shouldn't be any holdup, I was told. Arrived at 10am and was finally seen at 1:30pm. Then I was told that the infection was diminishing and now I have to return tomorrow (New Years eve) for another follow-up. That one is at 7:30am. Hopefully I will be out of there by the time the ball drops in Times Square.

As far as vision is concerned, that is quite good. I now test to the point that I no longer need glasses to drive and because the new lens is so much clearer then my old worn out natural, yellowed, ones my night vision has improved amazingly. I still am waiting to see how my Prostate Cancer is advancing (mid January) and if it is still at slow, slow speed, I will schedule my right eye at that point. Way to many things going on all at once. Aging is such a sweet experience.

Good news and bad news.

As long as the scales tip more toward the former than the latter, then you're still good.

Best wishes for a healthy New Year, my friend.

If I could convince my husband to drive between Orlando and Wyoming, that's what I'd do for exactly that reason!!! Plus, when you drive, you get to SEE so much more...you make that part of the vacation. It's more than just the road time, it's part of the activity....stop and see a cave here, or a fort there, or a landmark, etc. So much fun and so much cheaper than flying. But hubby won't go for it, at least not with the kids. :(
That was my one big surprise when I went to Europe. If you recall we took a lot of trains. I wasn't used to using trains and was a little apprehensive about it, but, I was sold within a few minutes. Just being able to see the landscape, people and movement that is lost at 30,000 feet, is mind boggling. I was sitting there looking out the window the entire trip(s).

Fort Worth is nice. We all travel to airports for the first time. My Sis started the week in Rio and now is in Autro Pertro and if you remember had her passport stolen in Mexico earlier this year and wound up extending her vacation because of it another 4 days without her family. Even if there are a few bumps along the way you will still have such fun. Betting by Saturday and Sunday for sure it won't be nearly as crowded. Just have the mindset for NYE that it will be beyond packed. On New Years Day if ya get up early many will be sleeping in. Enjoy your travels.

Good luck with tomorrow. My FIL had an appointment Monday and was kept waiting all day at his regular hospital. I think it's everywhere this week. Hurry up and wait:cautious:
