WEARY WILLIE DAY

Weary Willie Day is celebrated annually on December 9.

This holiday was named for the character made famous by Emmett Kelly, who was born on this day in 1898. This is a day to appreciate the art of clowning and the impact that it has had on our lives.

Weary Willie was a unique character to the art of clowning. Kelly had developed Weary Willy at a time when the white faced, goofy clown was the norm, and selling the idea for a sad, down-on-his-luck clown did not fit the formula most circuses were looking for. For the time being, Kelly put back on the the white face and the brightly colored costume.

Times and attitudes changed when the country was in the depths of the Great Depression. Down-trodden and world-weary was the face of the nation. People could identify with Weary Willie like never before. Weary Willie, his frowning, whisker-shadowed face and his dirty, torn and worn costume, went on to become an American icon.

OBSERVE

Wear some big shoes, pantomime or grab a bunch of people and pile into a tiny car. Clown college could be just around the corner! Use #WearyWillieDay to post on social media.
THNX for sharing. Isn't that what @MR FERRET wears most weekends?

Yeah, she didn't want to go to the orthopedist this morning. The upper part of the 4 toes are bruising. The side of her foot has a little lump and that area hurts the most. That is exactly where she broke it once before along with knocking off the tendon off the bone. She wants to wait a few days to see if it gets better on its own. She used the railing to get herself down the staircase at her apartment. Curious to see how she gets herself back up there. She can always stay here until she decides what she is going to do. 3 out 4 times she broke that foot was just before Christmas.
Wow, that is really hard for her. I hope she heals quickly.

Ha! Yeah I don't think so. Maybe some crave attention not this one, she is actually the opposite has never liked attention drawn to her. First time she broke it she was 48 pounds with a 22 pound backpack, tipped over going down front staircase heading for bus. Yep this board member started a board policy about weight percentage of body weight to books sent home. Too late for her but dang.

The next year she stepped on my boy golden retrievers paw.

The third time a gown-up Dad at an outdoor swim meet kicked a rock as she was walking to the block, full force to her foot. He took her down.

The last time she was in my truck coming home from 530 am swim practice during the summer. Kid blew through stop sign and T-Boned her. Slammed her body sideways into door of truck. Kid totalled his pick-up, mine bigger and better had a dent in front quarter panel. Likely saved her from having more than a broken foot and headache.

So sometimes what looks like attention getting cycles to some are just that accidents and when there is a weakness in a part of the body it tends to snap that much easier. Me it was my ankles. I was a gymnast. None of us stuck our landings all the time.
I had a year like that...always getting hurt, a kid at an amusement park ran into the back of my leg with a dolly. I had to go get stiches. Then a girl rear ended us, at a stop light. I went ice skating and fell and got a concussion. It was a bad year. Thankfully I've never had another one like it.
