I saw the first hour of part one of the American Experience last night, as I fell asleep at 10:00 (I'm always asleep by then--wish I could have stayed up).

Thought the first hour was excellent. I'm hoping to catch up this weekend when my local PBS stations will be repeating it. I imagine for Part 2 tonight, it will be the same; I'll catch the first hour only. I hate watching it out of sequence, but that's probably the only way I'll get to see the entire 4 hours over the course of this week.

Update: Just went to the PBS site for American Experience. Looks like they are also showing the episodes online so this might also be helpful for those of you trying to catch up as well.
I DVR'd it and watched it today. I was expecting a lot of it to be a condemnation, instead it was a more logical depiction of what a person with that kind of drive and imagination might be like personality wise. Not always pretty, but, certainly not Charles Manson type of thing. Good so far, recording the rest tonight although I may watch it as well.

Sargento had a commercial on, that said cheese food product only has to contain 69% cheese.
Well, the rest must be stabilizants, chemicals to prevent agglomeration and anti bacteria.

reminds me of Taco Bell, hiding how their supposed " 100% beef" was BS.
Most of their "meat" is actually filling made of chemicals, fillings, soy, wheat and other derivatives.
I mean, seriously.. less than 36% is real beef.. the rest are filling, flavorizants and chemicals.

I cant see that channel or that special.
How bad it was?
It was near the end of part 1 prior to the Animators Strike where Walt gave a speech to his animators which infuriated the staff when it was over. This must have been found from the Disney archives and Walt said "dam" a few times during that speech (Which back in the 40's and 30's was considered shocking to the public). I remember seeing an ad for the American Experience of Walt Disney DVD after part 1. Thankfully both part will be streamed online tomorrow.

Hearing that speech from Walt himself was pretty shocking since we're mostly familiar of Walt during the 50's when Disneyland got built.

And now he's going to be doing The Apprentice. Wonder if he'll be saying "you're fired"?

only because of said word? or for the content of it?
was the speech damaging to the employees and staff? or just because of the insults?

Just finished watching the first part of the Walt Disney PBS special. Pretty much like everything I've ever read about him. I greatly admire him, and always will. An awesome visionary. But, he was also human. ;) :)

I thought part one was pretty amazing too. Is it just me or did they make it seem like both his mom and dad were really harsh people? From what I've read his mom was kind of like Walt, kind of a prankster with a decent sense of humor.

But Astronomy requires a LOT of math. I took an Astronomy course in college and the lab was almost entirely math...calculating how bright stars were, how far things were from earth, etc. Miserable.

My first Astronomy class in college was like that a lot of math. I dropped it because I wasn't doing well (shhh, don't tell my science students), and the next semester I took it with a different professor. There was still math, but he was actually a consultant for NASA as well and we learned a lot of cool stuff. I was really glad I dropped the other class.

It appears that the speech was damaging to the staff and employees since this took place after the majority of workers and animators started getting their stuff taken away such as pain brushes, pencils, and the only stuff remaining is the writer's desk. If you catch part 1 and part 2 streaming online tomorrow you might understand what I'm talking about. It's a bit difficult to explain since this was the first time I started understanding about the writer's strike at the studios.

On a positive note, I found the recording of Walt and his wife cute to hear.

I've read several biographies. Neal Gabler, who wrote "Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination", which I've read, was interviewed on the show last night.
From what I've read, and understand, Flora was always a loving and nurturing mother, with a silly sense of humor, too. As best as she could be under their curcumstances, anyway. It was Elias that was quite religiously overbearing and hardened. Seems she was hardened to some degree because she needed to be, probably. But, again, from what I've read, she was also very loving and nurturing, and Walt loved her dearly.
