Prayers for Baltimore @StarWarsGirl @Dead2009 @Squidney I pray you, your friends and your families were nowhere near this
I was actually asleep when this happened, I didn't know what was going on till I woke up to ppl flipping out on the news
I didn't even know we had a webcam for the port, but this is where they got the video.
It went down horrifyingly fast. The bridge went down super fast. I'm sure my parents are grateful my days over going on two bridges (one way) each day are over. Granted Providence shipping lanes are not quite as busy as Baltimore. Navy ships don't come to Newport as much as before either.

I may have been over it more than you as one of my bff's parental units moved not too far from there and loved the view . Just so very sadI've only gone over that bridge a handful of times (there's also a tunnel, and you can go the other way around 695, which is typically how I go) but...I have no words.
Reports advised ship captain alerted Baltimore authorities that ship had electrical power issues and ship could not steer/ prior to ship crashing into the bridge. Baltimore staff started blockade at edges of bridge to stop more cars from driving across the bridge. It could have been much worse.I'm still confused about this whole thing. I tought that all exposed bridged had now some sort of barriers to prevent this after the massive collapse of the very longspan bridge in florida? I remember they added a ton of barriers in that bridge and its twin after it collapsed. (I think it was the Tampa bridge collapse in 1980 https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida/2024/03/26/florida-sunshine-skyway-bridge-disaster-collapse/ )
But in this case it seems some of the barriers made the ship veer straight into the bridge structure? the turn was hella confusing.
Those poor people driving on it who had no chance to react x_x
*edit*
just saw that compilation video. Jesucrist.. the entire thing fell down, even parts that were on the other interconnected areas... holy crap..
They should. It's on a federal highway, and that bridge cost $110 million in 1977. No way can the state afford that in today's dollars, and it's cutting off the port of Baltimore. Need emergency funding.Biden just came out and said the federal govt is paying for the bridge rebuild.
Yeah, the view driving across it on a clear day was gorgeous. I didn't need to use it that much because I don't often go down that way and where I get on 695, you can avoid the tunnel/bridge, which saves you a toll. But it was a spectacular bridge to drive across.I may have been over it more than you as one of my bff's parental units moved not too far from there and loved the view . Just so very sad
Best memory of the bridge was going over it with kiddo and the St Bernard rescue north at sunrise. Both were beautifulYeah, the view driving across it on a clear day was gorgeous. So the feds say they will pay for that but hasn't said they will pay for the 195 bridge in my state which has to be replaced.
Granted, my state's incompetence almost caused it to collapse vs a ship running through is different.
Anyone with a car and parts made in Europe will have future supply chain issues. A number of them sail to the Port of Baltimore. They should. Money can moved in companies / states when it is needed. It takes a disaster to get monies to be moved quickly to needed parties. So the feds say they will pay for that but hasn't said they will pay for the 195 bridge in my state which has to be replaced.

Lol. Reminds me of a similar post. MD members in thread has no relevance. I'm stating a fact on supply chain issues because of the bridge collapse. You're saying this as if there aren't people FROM Maryland in this thread. Lol.

Yes, and you seem to take offense when I stated supply chain issues resulting because of bridge collapse. Thanks to fed govt stepping up to assist and rebuild the bridge. I'm impressed with your governor Wes Moore. He's going to go places. But you quoted someone who lives in the state. We're very much aware what the bridge collapse means to Baltimore, the state of Maryland and the demand for supplies that come in. We're #1 in cars, construction machinery and sugar. The city is going to take a major hit with the jobs that have to be rerouted.
