Take a look at Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen in one of those upcoming Snow White movies
Comments: 1100%Strike Back below!
by: Mike Sampson Oct. 6, 2011

Back at Comic-Con, we got our first look at the cast of SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN in costume. It looked appropriately dark and brooding. Today, we get a first look at the cast in costume for that other Snow White movie, which doesn't even have a title yet.

The film stars Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane in a slightly more comedic take on the Snow White legend (at least more comedic than Kristen Stewart looking depressed in chainmail...). Tarsem Singh (IMMORTALS, THE FALL) is directing for Relativity Media, who is looking to sneak this movie into theaters before Universal's HUNTSMAN movie. Does it matter which one is first? Take a look at Roberts as the Evil Queen and Lily Collins as Snow and then compare that to the SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN characters to see which one you're digging on...

The Hollywood Reporter says that Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon topped the home video charts, scoring first place finishes on both the sales and rental charts for the week ending October 2nd.

The summer blockbuster, which was released without any bonus features on Friday before a more feature-packed version down the road, topped the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert and dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales charts, bumping Universal's Bridesmaids to second place. 64% of the title's sales came from Blu-ray.

"Dark of the Moon" also topped Home Media Magazine's rental chart for the week, as Paramount makes its titles available to all retail channels on the same day.

On the rental chart, "Dark of the Moon" knocked another Paramount title, Thor, out of first place and into second place.

The film was released in theaters on June 29 and has earned $1.12 billion at the worldwide box office.

Following images earlier this week of a bearded Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe as Jor-El, comes , courtesy of The Daily Mail, shots of Amy Adams on the Man of Steel set as Lois Lane, confirming that her portrayal of the typically raven-haired reporter will maintain the actress' red hair.

As you can see in the final image, a scan from John Byrne's 1988 miniseries, "The World of Metropolis", this isn't the first time that Lois has been depicted with red hair, though it does mark the first the first time the look has been employed for a film adaptation.

Adams joins Cavill, Crowe, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Russell Crowe, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, Harry Lennix and Laurence Fishburne for the film, scheduled to hit theaters on June 14, 2013.

Zorro Reboot Hires Writers....

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=82998

Zorro Reboot Hires Writers
Source: Deadline , Isabel Allende October 6, 2011

Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia have been hired to draft a reboot of Zorro, Deadline reports. This version is said to be based on the Isabel Allende novel that, released in 2005, served as a mock biography. Allende describes her take on her official site as follows:

A swashbuckling adventure story, "Zorro" reveals the history behind the legendary masked man.

Born in Southern California in the late eighteenth century, Diego de la Vega is a child of two worlds. His father is an aristocratic Spanish military man turned landowner, his mother a Shoshone warrior. From his father, Diego receives lessons in the art of fencing and in cattle branding; from his maternal grandmother, White Owl, he learns the ways of her tribe. As a child he also witnesses the brutal injustices dealt Native Americans by European settlers and begins to feel the inner conflict of his dual heritage.

At the age of sixteen, Diego is sent to Barcelona to be educated. Spain is chafing under the corruption of Napoleonic rule, and Diego, following the example of his celebrated fencing master, joins La Justicia, a secret underground resistance movement devoted to helping the powerless and the poor. With this tumultuous period as a backdrop, Diego falls in love, saves the persecuted, and confronts a great rival who emerges from the world of privilege. After many adventures—duels at dawn, fierce battles with pirates at sea, and daring rescues—Diego de la Vega, a.k.a. Zorro, returns to America to reclaim the hacienda where he was raised and to seek justice for all who cannot fight for it themselves.

Federman and Scaia are best known for television series like "Human Target", "Jericho" and "Warehouse 13". Though Zorro will be released through Sony Pictures, it isn't planned to have any connection the previous modern film versions, The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro.

Sony Pictures Animation Opens Pooch Café
Source: Sony Pictures Animation October 6, 2011

Sony Pictures Animation has just announced plans for Pooch Café, to be written and directed by Kelly Asbury and based on the comic strip by Paul Gilligan. Asbury directed this year's Gnomeo & Juliet and was the co-director of Shrek 2.

Planned for CG-animation, Pooch Café stars Poncho, a cheese-loving, squirrel-fearing, toilet-drinking mutt who joins his canine friends at the Pooch Café, a neighborhood hangout where dogs can be dogs – comparing notes on such weighty issues as avoiding baths, zebra-flavored kibble, and the construction of a giant catapult with which to hurl all the Earth's cats into the Sun.

"Kelly's wit and cinematic sensibility pairs wonderfully with the irreverent characters and wry comedy in the 'Pooch Café' comic strip," says SPA's president of production, Michelle Raimo-Kouyate. "We've been looking for something to do with Kelly, and this was a perfect match."

First Look at Touch, Starring Kiefer Sutherland
Source: Fox October 7, 2011

Fox has released this first look at "Touch," a new drama series starring Emmy and Golden Globe winner Kiefer Sutherland. The show is created and written by Emmy-nominated Tim Kring ("Heroes") and will join the Fox schedule in the spring of 2012. "Touch" is a distinctly uplifting drama in which science and spirituality intersect with the hopeful premise that we are all interconnected, tied in invisible ways to those whose lives we are destined to alter and impact.

At the center of "Touch" is Martin Bohm (Sutherland), a widower and single father, haunted by an inability to connect to his mute 11-year-old son, Jake (David Mazouz). After multiple failed attempts at keeping Jake in school, Martin is visited by Clea Hopkins (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a social worker sent to evaluate Jake's well-being. Everything changes when Martin discovers that Jake possesses the gift of staggering genius - the ability to see things that no one else can and the patterns that connect seemingly unrelated events. Jake is indeed communicating. But it's not with words, it's with numbers. Martin meets Arthur DeWitt (Danny Glover), a professor and an expert on children who possess special gifts when it comes to numbers. Now, it's up to Martin to decipher the meaning and connect the numbers to the cast of characters whose lives they affect.

Aaron Eckhart to Star in I, Frankenstein...

Aaron Eckhart to Star in I, Frankenstein
Source: Lionsgate October 7, 2011

Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) will play Adam Frankenstein in the Lakeshore Entertainment, Hopscotch Features and Lionsgate production of I, Frankenstein, which starts filming in Australia in January. The film was written and is to be directed by Stuart Beattie (director of Australia's breakout hit Tomorrow, When the War Began, and writer of such films as "Pirates of the Caribbean," G.I. Joe, 30 Days of Night and Collateral), and is based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, co-creator of the "Underworld" franchise. Lionsgate will distribute the film in the United States, Lakeshore will handle international sales and E1/Hopscotch will distribute in Australia. The U.S. release has been set for February 22, 2013.

Aaron Eckhart recently finished shooting the lead role as an ex-CIA agent in The Expatriate, and stars alongside Johnny Depp in the upcoming The Rum Diary.

I, Frankenstein is a modern-day epic: Frankenstein's creature, Adam, has survived to present day due to a genetic quirk in his creation. Making his way to a dark, gothic metropolis, he finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans. As writer/director, Stuart Beattie said, "Mary Shelly's story is about the creation of the first human being. This is the story about that being becoming human."

"We are thrilled to again be collaborating with Lakeshore Entertainment, and Aaron Eckhart, one of today's most versatile and talented actors. This story is all about what it means to be human, and there could be no more achingly human performance than the one Aaron gave in our own 'Rabbit Hole.' We are so excited to see what he will bring to this role," said Lionsgate’s co-COO and Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake of the production. "This is a wonderfully imaginative script and we are looking forward to seeing it brought to life by a talented filmmaker, and to bringing this story to our loyal genre fans."

"We've tremendously enjoyed making our 'Underworld' franchise films and we are looking forward to working with Stuart and our partners at Hopscotch and Lionsgate to create a new world for a legendary character," said Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg, adding "We know that Aaron, with his proven range, depth and intelligence, is going to make an iconic Adam."

Troy Lum of Hopscotch said, "We have wanted to work with Stuart on a big film in Australia and when we had the opportunity earlier this year to expand our relationship with Lakeshore on the creation of a potential franchise, it all came together."

Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, Andrew Mason (who produced Beattie's Tomorrow, When the War Began) and Richard Wright of Lakeshore are producing the film, with Hopscotch's Troy Lum and Kevin Grevioux as executive producers.

Michael Paseornek, Lionsgate's President of Motion Picture Development and Production will be shepherding the project at the studio.

Sony Eyes Steve Jobs Biopic.....

Sony Eyes Steve Jobs Biopic
Source: Deadline , Simon & Schuster October 7, 2011

Following the tragic news of his passing earlier this week, Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures has begun negotiations to turn the life of Steve Jobs into a feature film.

The project, still in the early stages, would be based on the upcoming biography, "Steve Jobs" by Walter Isaacson, set to be released later this month. Fully authorized, the book is officially described as follows:

Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years—as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues—Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the twenty-first century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple's hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

Jobs' life was previously adapted as a 1999 telefilm, Pirates of Silicon Valley, in turn based on the book "Fire in the Valley: The Making of the Personal Computer" by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine. That film featured Noah Wyle in the role of Jobs.

Netflix Scraps Plans to Separate DVD-by-Mail Service
Source: Netflix October 10, 2011

Netflix, Inc. today said it will not rename its DVD-by-mail service and that its U.S. members will continue to go to the Netflix website for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

Netflix said in a September 18 blog post that its DVD-by-mail service would operate at Qwikster.com. Instead, U.S. members will continue to use one website, one account and one password for their movie and TV watching enjoyment under the Netflix brand.

"Consumers value the simplicity Netflix has always offered and we respect that," said Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings. "There is a difference between moving quickly -- which Netflix has done very well for years -- and moving too fast, which is what we did in this case."

Netflix today informed its U.S. members in personal emails and a post on the Netflix Blog, which you can read below:

DVDs will be staying at netflix.com

It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password… in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

We’re constantly improving our streaming selection. We’ve recently added hundreds of movies from Paramount, Sony, Universal, Fox, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, MGM and Miramax. Plus, in the last couple of weeks alone, we’ve added over 3,500 TV episodes from ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, USA, E!, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, TLC, SyFy, A&E, History, and PBS.

We value our members, and we are committed to making Netflix the best place to get movies & TV shows.

Thank you.

-Reed

Following the premiere of the poster, the trailer for the violent, post-apocalyptic thriller The Divide has come online as well and can be watched using the player below.

Opening in theaters in January, the Xavier Gens-directed film stars Lauren German, Michael Biehn, Milo Ventimiglia, Courtney B. Vance, Ivan Gonzalez, Michael Eklund, Abbey Thickson, Ashton Holmes and Rosanna Arquette.

In The Divide, nine strangers-all tenants of a New York high rise apartment-escape a nuclear attack by hiding out in the building's bunker-like basement. Trapped for days underground with no hope for rescue, and only unspeakable horrors awaiting them on the other side of the bunker door, the group begins to descend into madness, each turning on one another with physical and psycho-sexual torment. As supplies dwindle, and tensions flare, and they grow increasingly unhinged by their close quarters and hopelessness, each act against one another becomes more depraved than the next. While everyone in the bunker allows themselves to be overcome by desperation and lose their humanity, one survivor holds onto a thin chance for escape even with no promise of salvation on the outside.

A Preview of James Cameron's Titanic 3D Rerelease....

Check it out:

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=83123

A Preview of James Cameron's Titanic 3D Rerelease
Source: Edward Douglas October 12, 2011

Earlier this week, ComingSoon.net had a chance to watch roughly 18 minutes, essentially 8 key scenes, from James Cameron's Oscar-winning 1997 film Titanic, which has been converted into 3D for the film's rerelease in April 2012 to coincide with the 100th Anniversary of its sinking. The footage was followed by a short Q&A session with the filmmaker and his producer Jon Landau to talk about the conversion process as well as the reasoning that went into doing this rerelease.

In his introduction, Cameron stressed that he wouldn't be changing a single frame of the original movie, but unlike other 3D post-production conversions, they're spending over a year working with 300 artists to go through every shot and pixel of the movie and do what's necessary to make the new theatrical experience as relevant and memorable as the original. Cameron's intentions are to use the conversion process to create a movie that has the same depth of field it might have if he had been able to shoot the movie in 3D originally, using the decade of experience he's had with 3D photography and filmmaking to make sure every scene looks as good as it possibly can.

The clips shown were taken from different points in the three-hour film, beginning with a scene of the boarding of the Titanic from the opening of the movie, an absolutely stunning shot in 3D where you can see the throngs of people on the docks stretching for hundreds of yards with the Titanic looming above them, as Kate Winslet's Rose arrives to board. The next scene took place much later in the movie, and it involved Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack meeting Rose on the stairs, so we could see what the added dimension does to bring to life the interior sets that were built for the movie, followed by a scene of Rose down in steerage dancing with Jack, before being found and brought back upstairs for an awkward breakfast with her fiancé (It's impressive how much younger both actors look in 3D!)

The most impressive shot was the tracking shot of the bow of the boat when Jack and Rose are on there and she's pretending to fly, because the 3D really gives you a feel of how high the ship was from the water, and watching the camera pan so fluidly across the bow with the water shimmering below shows what sort of care is being put into making the movie look just as good in 3D. This isn't the typical converted movie that seems to have very obvious layers between foreground and background.

They also showed four scenes from the actual crash and sinking of the boat, beginning with the spotting of the iceberg and the moments leading up to the crash. The longest sequence we watched shows Rose going below decks to look for Jack, who has been handcuffed to a pipe by her boyfriend's guard, and after finding him, she frantically tries to get help in order to rescue him as the ship sinks deeper and deeper. This was another good example of how good the water looks in 3D, because there are many scenes in this sequence of Rose looking down one hallway or another which stretches into the distance. We also watched the scene with everyone clamoring to board the lifeboats and cutting them free as the water started reaching the decks, then the final scene had Jack and Rose back on the railing of the boat, but this time as the ship jutted straight out of the water before its final plunge.

The footage had real depth and dimension but the 3D was never distracting, and it did add a lot to seeing these scenes, especially having not seen the film in over ten years and on a big screen in even longer. Although Cameron mentioned they're really pushing how far they could take the 3D depth of field with the process, it didn't seem to be as noticeable in these later scenes, maybe because the more activity on screen warranted less 3D tinkering. Cameron and Landau looked at this process as a creative visual FX process rather than a technical one, and we were surprised to learn that doing this post-conversion process didn't require bringing back the original film's DP Russell Carpenter or the original FX team, since the original movie was more model-based, so there weren't hard drives full of computer data that could be used to make the process easier. Cameron said, "I consider that a part of the process of conversion which is all visual FX, where every single shot, no matter how simple it was--like an insert shot of somebody picking up a fork--is now a visual FX shot with 20 artists working on it."

"While many movies take six weeks for the whole process, we're taking sixty weeks," Landau added. "You can't do justice to water, you can't do justice to smoke, you can't do justice to a close-up in six weeks. You're just jamming it together and a lot of times the director's not even there for that process." Cameron feels that much of the problems that have led to the backlash against 3D comes from studios forcing their filmmakers to release their movies in 3D, which often relies on a decision by the accountants to convert rather than shoot in 3D because it's cheaper, even though the results aren't the same.

Cameron also reflected on the success of the original movie 14 years ago and why it warranted this sort of rerelease. "I was trying to account for what was similar between the 'Titanic' phenomenon and the 'Avatar' phenomenon, which proved very similar in a way. Even though the movies were completely different and didn't even always necessarily play to the same segments of the audience. I think it was that decision to see the film on the big screen and I think the 3D part of that gives people a reason to go to the movie theater. But I think there's a lot more going on with it than just that."

He gave a couple examples of this. "There are younger kids we're going to have to sell it to that don't know the movie. There's going to be a teenage audience that only knows the movie from video, and the question is whether they know that just from peer-to-peer or is it passed on from watching it with their family, their parents? There's social aspects to it we can't understand. I've always thought of the watching of this film in theaters as being a social phenomenon where parents could take their children or a teenager would go with his Mom where people would actually make their social appointments to go, and that's why the film was still cranking strong in the 10th, 12th and 16th week, because it takes people time to get that all worked out. 'I'm definitely going to see it in a theatre. I'm not going to see some pirated cheesy download. I've made that decision, now I have to figure out who I'm going to go with.' Very often, there was a lot of repeat viewing, but I don't think it was people going back solo and watching it over and over having the same experience. I think it was people communicating what they experienced with someone else."

"The way both Fox and Paramount are approaching this is as a new release," Landau added. "I think you'll see the campaigns that are very aggressive to a new audience, just like would be on any new release."

"They're marketing it with the energy of a new tentpole release," Cameron agreed, "but you can't sell it the way you would sell a franchise movie in the marketplace, because you're not going to take the time to tell people the story. You're going to make the assumption they know the story, but we kind of made that assumption the first time around, because the over-arching story of Titanic is so well known. We're not trying to tell the story in the trailer, and we're really happy with the trailer, because actually it's more of a memory-skewing device to remind you of how the film worked, that it wasn't this sappy romance, that there was real jeopardy and the threat of hideous death for these people that overshadowed these light romantic moments. That juxtaposition of love and death that made the film powerful and poignant."

When asked whether the rerelease is being done merely to push the gross of Titanic over that of its record-breaking follow-up Avatar, he joked, "Because we're just greedy motherf*ckers, and we didn't make enough the first time around. It just felt right in the centenary of the sinking of Titanic to bring this back out for fans who either are fans of the movie but have never had the widescreen experience or are fans of the movie who remember it from back then and want to re-experience that. I think it's perfectly valid."

"Let's remind ourselves - Hollywood is a business, and there's nothing wrong with that," he continued. "I personally am interested in fostering and promoting 3D as a viable business, and not only for the cinema, but the home market as well, so having a successful film in 3D is a good thing. Whether I'm involved with it or not, I'm happy. It doesn't matter what that 3D title is, because it helps the business."

When asked about making changes in the movie, Cameron joked that he'll let George Lucas be the filmmaker who goes back to his earlier work and changes things. "That's an example of what I don't want to do," he quipped, then added. "That's not a slam. I think he considers his movies a perpetual work in progress. For me, the problem is when you pull that thread, it all unravels because where do you stop? For example, I've done three expeditions to the Titanic, I've done literally hundreds of hours of exploration of the interior of the wreck, always photographing all the stairwells, so I know the places where the film is wrong." In other words, Cameron has been able to learn a lot more information about the interiors of the Titanic than he had when he made the movie, but he knows that going back to fix those things would be very time-consuming.

One of the surprising things we learned is that those who may be adverse to 3D will also have a chance to see Titanic in a pristine new digital 2D and 2D IMAX version coming off the new 4K Master created in the process. Both Cameron and Landau thought that far too much emphasis of the story was put on the 3D of Avatar and how that contributed to its record-breaking box office. Similarly, he feels that too much of the media are to blame for the idea that 3D is losing ground at the box office just because it may be accounting for smaller percentages of a movie's take, and he's not worried about it affecting the rerelease either.

"Look, I think there's a trick to how you play the 3D card in the marketing of this," Cameron stated while stressing that the focus of the rerelease is to give those who loved the movie another chance to have the theatrical experience. "The 3D is interesting and it does galvanize the experience and ratchet it up to a new level, but it's still 'Titanic' in a movie theater which a lot of people have never seen, so from my perspective, I'd like that to be the lead line, that it's 'Titanic' being released after 14 years away on the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic itself to a new generation that's never seen it in theatres... and it's in 3D!"

Cameron isn't ruling out the idea of someday rereleasing some of his other popular movies like T2 in this manner, but for now, the filmmakers are going to be off-the-grid making the sequels to Avatar, and it was only the time they had between to see how this experiment of converting and rereleasing might work with Landau considering Titanic a "no-brainer" for this sort of re-release.

Cameron concluded with his thought on this. "We've seen one 3D rerelease so far that's been successful (The Lion King), and we're about to see another one right after the first of the year with Star Wars and then we'll be the third one, and then after that, I think we'll have a sense of whether people consider that valid. Maybe with the changing way people consume media, the idea of these favorite, beloved movies actually do have a place back in the cinema."

Titanic will get its rerelease into 3D, 2D and 3D IMAX theatres on April 6, 2012.

How many lives must be sacrificed in your quest for unlimited sequel money Mila Jovovich?

Just kidding, though 16 people were hurt on the set of Resident Evil 5, no one was killed fortunately, but it was a scary accident. A group of extras in full zombie makeup were on a mobile platform that suddenly shifted, causing them to fall about 20 feet to the ground.

The problem then became figuring out who was actually injured, and who was just wearing gruesome zombie makeup that looked like an injury. With several broken bones in the mix, it took a while to get sorted out who was hurt and who was just in costume. Is it bad that seems just a BIT funny? But I’m glad no one was seriously injured!

If you’re sitting there wondering why RESIDENT EVIL 5 exists in the first place, did you know that the fourth movie, AFTERLIFE, grossed $300M worldwide? Yeah, I know.

Javier Bardem is confirmed for Bond 23

It may not have a title yet, but BOND 23 is racking up a full roster in terms of a cast. One of the rumored members for a while now has been Javier Bardem, but only now is he officially confirming that he is in fact playing a part in the film to Nightline.

"I am very excited, my parents took me to watch the movies, and I saw all of them, and to play that is going to be fun. They chose me to play this man, but I cannot give you many details."

It’s a bad guy role, which you might have guessed , and Ralph Fiennes is also supposed to be on board as a villain, but his part is so secret that according to him, “I swallowed a pill to make me forget what I was told.” If I had to guess, I think they might make him Blofeld, who is rumored to be making a return.

Judi Dench is back, Naomi Harris is Moneypenny, and Ben Whishaw, Helen McCrory and Berenice Marlohne are also on board. The only rumor about the title now is that it’s called SKYFALL, but that has yet to be anything close to confirm. Too close to the upcoming SKYRIM game for my liking, and doesn’t really sound like a Bond title anyway.
