J.J. Abrams' untitled Star Trek sequel may have found its villain. Variety reports that, while nothing is yet official, Benicio Del Toro is expected to be offered the role imminently.

Famous for his secrecy, Abrams has reportedly not yet revealed even to the actor what the role will be, though production is expected to begin this January.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin are expected to all reprise their roles as members of the Enterprise crew with Abrams back in the director's chair and a script again from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

Kristen Stewart Offered Akira
Source: Twitch November 15, 2011

The live-action take on Katsuhiro Otomo's classic manga moving forward, Akira may have found its Kei. Twitch reports that The Twilight Saga star Kristen Stewart has been offered to play the female lead.

Stewart joins a bevy of talent said to be up for roles, including Garrett Hedlund in the leading role of Kaneda, Gary Oldman as the Colonel and both Helena Bonham Carter and Keira Knightley for undisclosed roles (Potentially Knightley could be up for Kei as well).

The Kei character is the romantic interest of Kaneda, a member of a biker gang in a cyberpunk dystopia.

Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) is set to direct with a script from "Harry Potter" screenwriter Steve Kloves. Previously, Akira was famously adapted as an anime film in 1988, although this take on the story is said to transplant the action from "Neo-Tokyo" to "New Manhattan."

Update on the Star Trek Sequel Production
Source: TrekMovie November 16, 2011

TrekMovie has posted an update on the production for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek sequel. The site says that filming officially starts on January 15, 2012 for a 2013 release.

Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have been working on 3rd draft of the script, though it's pretty much ready to go.

The site adds some spoilerish details on the locations that may be used:

TrekMovie has learned that Abrams himself traveled to Hawaii to scout a location which is being seriously considered for a "jungle planet." Shooting will also include a museum in Los Angeles standing in for what a source said was a "famous Star Trek location." As per usual with a Star Trek film, studio shooting will take place on a number of stages on the Paramount lot.

While all the main cast of the first film will return, none of the new roles have been cast so far.

Simon Beaufoy to Draft Hunger Games Sequel?...

Simon Beaufoy to Draft Hunger Games Sequel?
Source: Deadline November 16, 2011

With the first film's full trailer hitting earlier this week and hopes high for a top-tier franchise, the producers of The Hunger Games are already eyeing the sequel, which will adapt Suzanne Collins' second book, Catching Fire. Deadline reports that a new writer is likely to be brought into the mix and the studio's current choice is Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy.

Gary Ross, the director of the first film, wrote the screenplay with Collins, but it is suggested that his busy post-production schedule precludes him from following suit with Catching Fire. He is planning, however, to return as director.

Following Slumdog, Beaufoy re-teamed with director Danny Boyle for 127 Hours. His next work, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, is being directed by Lasse Hallström and will hit theaters March 2, 2012.

It was reported last week that, to justify a sequel, the first film will have to gross over $100 million domestically, something that the studio has every confidence in.

Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Wes Bentley, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz and many more, The Hunger Games hits theaters on March 23, 2012.

I'm definitely looking forward to the release of "The Hunger Games" next year. I'd be surprised if it didn't reach the goal it needs to for a sequel in under 2 weeks, let alone before the first week of release is up. But then, I've been wrong before. Just that the books have made quite a fan base for themselves, so the movie would have to truly suck in order to not get the sequel approved.

I agree, these should be some great movies! It'll be interesting to see how much of a following they get; I just really hope they live up to the books.

New Line Goes on a Giant Monster Rampage
Source: The Hollywood Reporter , Moby Games November 17, 2011

New Line Cinema is interested in bringing some classic 8-Bit action to the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter has word that a feature film version of Rampage is in early development, based on the 1986 game from Atari.

The Kaiju-themed game was a cross-platform hit and spawned five sequels with the most recent, "Rampage: Total Destruction" arriving in 2006 for the 20th anniversary. The original game is officially described as follows (thanks to Moby Games):

George, Lizzy and Ralph were just ordinary Americans, until an experiment went wrong, turning them into a Gorilla, Lizard and Werewolf respectively. Following this, the three of them plan to go round destroying buildings, and up to three human players can join in.

Smashing at the edges of the buildings for long enough will make them collapse. The police and military are after you, and will shoot at you, so try to destroy them (failing that, you can avoid the bullets). You will need to eat regularly, with things like plants on offer, to avoid shrinking back to being human.

Well, the trailer looks pretty good, I'll definitely give it that. Not sure that it will quite be as good as the books, but if it's even half as good, then we should be worth it. I'm liking Woody Harrelson as Haymitch. And now that I'm looking at things, Lenny Kravitz might just be pretty cool as Cinna after all.

Used to love that game and played it all the time at the arcades and on the NES. Might be entertaining enough for a day of mindless monster mayhem at the theaters.

Chris Nolan talks Dark Knight Rises timeline and more on Bane's origins
Comments: 1490%Strike Back below!
by: Mike Sampson Nov. 21, 2011

For the first time, director Christopher Nolan is opening up publicly about THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Speaking to Empire Magazine in advance of the upcoming six-minute preview that will be in theaters with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4, Nolan talked about how this film fits into the trilogy.

"Perhaps surprisingly for some people, Nolan says, "our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after THE DARK KNIGHT. So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state." You mean, he's in New Jersey?

Lest you think Nolan would give Bruce Wayne the opportunity to sip team and contemplate retirement Nolan adds, "With Bane, we're looking to give Batman a challenge he hasn't had before. With our choice of villain and with our choice of story we're testing Batman both physically as well as mentally."

So who is this Bane character anyway? Explains Tom Hardy: "He's brutal. Brutal....The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it's nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns." Ouch?

The film's costume designer explains Bane's look and hints at his origins somewhat by saying, "He was injured early in his story. He's suffering from pain and needs gas to survive. He can't survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at his back, where there are two canisters."

Speaking of origins, Nolan confirms that the six-minute prologue in December will focus mostly on Bane's beginnings so we'll all find out how it happens soon enough...

First Look at Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
Source: Entertainment Weekly December 2, 2011

Entertainment Weekly has a first look at Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. Coming to theaters on March 2nd, the film also stars Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare and Derek Mears.

The movie takes place 15 years after the siblings' incident at the gingerbread house. Arterton explains: "You see a series of flashbacks with their experience of killing that first witch, which is brilliant... The heart of it is that these kids grow up to be bloodthirsty witch hunters."

She added that, while the film is a bit tongue in cheek, "it's also very, very dark, and bloodthirsty and there's a lot of cursing. It's kind of got a [Quentin] Tarantino feel, really."

So what are the characters like in the movie? "Gretel is much more in tune with her spiritual side. Hansel is a typical action hero, cheeky, funny, a womanizer. She's much more of a thinker, intense, internal and bit more open-minded than he is."

The trailer will be revealed next Thursday.

The Dark Knight Rises Prologue Details!
Source: Warner Bros. December 1, 2011

Rumored for some time, Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that their upcoming Christopher Nolan bat-finale, The Dark Knight Rises, will receive a special prologue before select IMAX screenings of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol beginning December 16th. Details of the event are listed below in the official press release along with a list of the 42 locations that will be offering the six-minute opening:

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The Dark Knight Rises” — the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy — is one of the most anticipated films of 2012, but moviegoers won’t have to wait until next year to see the six-minute opening sequence of the film. The film’s prologue will be unveiled exclusively in select 70mm IMAX® theatres worldwide. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The Prologue will be released in North America on December 16, and in the UK on December 21, 2011. Additional international dates vary by territory and will be announced soon.

In making the 2008 blockbuster “The Dark Knight,” Nolan was the first to use IMAX® cameras in a major motion picture release, and, as now, audiences were given an advance look at that film’s prologue months prior to the Summer 2008 opening. Nolan employed the extremely high-resolution cameras even more extensively on “The Dark Knight Rises”—including the film’s prologue—to achieve unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for the moviegoers.

Christopher Nolan stated, “Our experience on ‘The Dark Knight’ shooting and projecting IMAX 15 perf 65mm/70mm film was inspiring. The immersive quality of the image goes beyond any other filmmaking tool available, and in revisiting Gotham, we were determined to shoot even more of the movie in this unique format. Giving the fans an early look at an IMAX sequence is a great way to draw attention to what I believe will be an incredible way to experience our story when it comes out next summer.”

Christopher Nolan Talks The Dark Knight Rises
Source: The LA Times December 12, 2011

Publicity for The Dark Knight Rises has kicked into high gear with press screenings of the the IMAX prologue, the viral Operation Early Bird and the release of a brand-new teaser poster over the weekend. Today, The LA Times had the opportunity to speak with director Christopher Nolan about the highly-anticipated release, discussing the reasons for choosing Bane as the film's primary villain.

"I didn't know him very well," says Nolan of the comic book iteration of Bane. "David Goyer got me a bunch of stuff on him and we looked into him. I only knew him by name, I wasn't familiar with his back story. He's a very cool character. And getting an actor like Tom to take it on, you know you're going to get something very special. Tom is somebody who really knows how to put character into every gesture, every aspect of his physicality in the way that great actors can... With Bane, the physicality is the thing. With a good villain you need an archetype, you know, you need the extreme of some type of villainy. The Joker is obviously a particular archetype of diabolical, chaotic anarchy and has a devilish sense of humor. Bane, to me, is something we haven't dealt with in the films. We wanted to do something very different in this film. He's a primarily physical villain, he's a classic movie monster in a way — but with a terrific brain. I think he's a fascinating character. I think people are going to get a kick out of what we've done with him."

Nolan also discussed the jump forward in time that fans will experience between the The Dark Knight film and The Dark Knight Rises. As was previously announced, the new film will take place eight years after the end of the 2008 film.

"It will make a lot more sense to people when they see the film," Nolan explains. "But it's not a great mystery — it's the jumping-off point for the film — but it's hard for me to articulate it. I think the mood at the beginning of the film will make a lot of sense. If I had to express it thematically, I think what we're saying is that for Batman and Commissioner Gordon, there's a big sacrifice, a big compromise, at the end of the 'The Dark Knight' and for that to mean something, that sacrifice has to work and Gotham has to get better in a sense. They have to achieve something for the ending of that film — and the feeling at the end of that film — to have validity. Their sacrifice has to have meaning and it takes time to establish that and to show that, and that’s the primary reason we did that. It's a time period that is not so far ahead that we would have to do crazy makeup or anything — which I think would be distracting — but it gave them something to get their teeth into, particularly Christian in terms of [portraying] this guy who has been frozen in this moment in time with nowhere to go. He really has done an incredible job figuring out how to characterize that and express that."

Set for release on July 20, 2012, The Dark Knight Rises also stars Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Juno Temple, Josh Pence, Daniel Sunjata and Nestor Carbonell.
