Star Tours II - Ride reviews

Wow! I haven't been since '96. My age and perception of time must be at a difference! LOL :ROFLOL:

Well I understand why you would feel that way since in the new version you have multiple travel cuts with the hyperspace and the message from one of the three characters you can get each time. This cuts the pacing of the ride a little differently.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I love 2.0 so much.

I loved the original ride, but truth be told - it didn't have a lot to do with Star Wars. I mean, how big was that "ice cave" sequence that moved rather slowly?

This ride is jam-packed with Star Wars and characters, as a Star Wars ride should be. So much more happens in the same space of time that I agree, it did feel longer.

What, a ride can't expand the Star Wars universe a little like the tons of video games, novels, comics and other media going beyond the movie characters? Sure it's nice they brought the movies into the ride now, but that doesn't mean that the lack of movie stuff in the old one should be considered a fault.

Oh geeze, LOL.

First of all, when the ride was created (during 1986, it opened in 1987 at Disneyland), there was no EU to speak of. There were no novels, everything was based on the films, with the exception of the Marvel comics which were considered non-canon even then.

Second, even today, to the vast majority of the public (and many, many fans) the films are Star Wars to them. And most of the EU is based on characters from those films in one way or another (with very few exceptions, i.e. SoE).

If you took a random frame out of the old ride and showed it to someone, a screenshot of the film, quite a bit of it would be generic. It would be very difficult to identify it as "Star Wars" at all. Spending 1/2 the ride time bouncing around a generic 80's/90's "3-D cave" (for other examples, see Body Wars, Back to the Future, etc.) really isn't very iconic of Star Wars.

The old ride was great. I loved it dearly. And I hope they have some way to put the old ride film in the new ride for special events. However, one complaint people always had was that there was very little "Star Wars" aside from the ending, and in the new ride it's Star Wars at every single moment. When at the Launch Party I asked one of the Imagineers about this and they said it was very intentional, as it was part of the mission of this ride to make it as Star wars as possible as they saw it as a fault of the previous version.

False. The first EU novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye was published in 1978.

Indeed.

I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan, yet despite that I am nearly completely uninterested in the Expanded Universe.
Star Wars geeks dominate SW websites, this may create the skewed impression that there is a lot of interest in the EU. Me, I think that less than one in a hundred SW fans is even remotely interested in the novels and comics and internet geek stuff.

Well done to the designers for giving the new ride a more Star Warsy feel. Can't wait to ride it!

Well I'm just back from spending two weeks in Florida and we went to DHS just after Star Tours opened and I have to say...where were the queues?

I've no doubt that it would be busy on the actual weekends but when we went in we ended up getting a Fastpass purely because we wanted to have a stroll round DHS and when we got back there was a queue but couldn't have been more than 20 minutes. On a seperate day, we went back to DHS and it was WALK ON!? My wife took our 9 year old on and I stayed off as we also have a 2 year old. When they came off I went back on straight away with the 9 year old. On the biggest plus point I got mostly a different journey each time.

I actually really enjoyed the Naboo part (oddly) and also the Boba Fett asteroid field.

Wow! I remember reading that when I was 11 years old. Completely forgot about it. It was something to hold over a SW fanatic until "Empire".

It was actually going to be a filmed sequel. That if the first Star Wars didn't do so hot, he could do a lower budget follow-up

How is the line looking for this ride is it taking attention away from TSMM yet or is there no line for this at all?

Heh, noooo. The other day, Toy Story Mania was at a 130 minute wait, and Star Tours was under an hour (I can't remember the exact amount). Star Tours definitely has the shorter wait right now

Presumably the build in crowds at Star Tours have to be coming from somewhere... Len? Fred? Any Ideas? Are lines dropping at Tower of Terror or Rock 'n' Roller Coaster?

But Star Tours also has a much higher capacity, so this is not a good indication of popularity.

Even so, Toy Story has the longer wait for a couple of reasons- 1) the height requirement at Star Tours limits who can ride (Toy Story is the all-around family ride), and 2) Toy Story appeals to a lot of people, while Star Tours will only appeal to certain people

i just wonder if over time people are going to get sick of waiting 2 hours for a 7 min toy story ride. Disney studios has too many shows and not enough rides that you can get on in under 15 min. It has the least amount of actual rides, yet it is nearly impossible to do everything in one day because most of the attractions are long shows or have extremely long waits by todays standards. I think they need to scale back on the small rides, and come up with some really epic stuff that will move a lot of people without running out of fastpass's in one hour. But seems for now they are focusing on the magic kingdom..and thats probaly the way it should be.

At Disney for 10 days with family. TSMM lines are still waaaaaaaayyyyy longer than Star Tours. At rope drop, the lines for FP for TSMM were crazy, but you could walk right on to Star Tours. We rode it twice, and waited for 5 mins the first time, and 20 or so the second.

My first impressions of the ride....It's a marked improvement over the first version, but I thought it was just ok. I didn't think it was great. The clarity of the screens was fantastic, but it still not an immersive experience, IMO. They queue is great, though.

The screens are too small to make you feel like you're actually in the environment. The simulators don't seem to move enough, either. I think, given the simulators used, it's probably about as good as it can get.

It's a major upgrade over Version 1.0, but not something I'd rush to ride again. Both my wife and son both agreed. They thought it was good, but not on their "must do" list.

Exactly, which is why I said, "there was no EU to speak of", as one novel (that, as pointed out earlier, was originally going to be a low-rent sequel) doesn't make an "extended universe" of.

I actually picked up a copy of it a few months ago, just haven't been able to read it myself yet.

In any case, there certainly was no EU as we know it now. And I'm terribly happy that the new ride is so film-focused. :)

I rode it for the first time on Father's Day. Stopped by Toy Story first to get a fastpass, at 9:30 they were already out to 2:30 PM on return times with an hour wait for the ride already. Meanwhile, Star Tours was a walk-on.

I will say that the new Star Tours is very well done and I liked it much better than the previous version. The motion syncing is much better and left me with very little motion sickness compared to what I used to get. I was a little underwhelmed with the 3d, but it was noticeable. The best part is repeatability, where I could go without riding Star Tours in the past, I do really want to ride it several more times to see the different versions of the ride. That is a great benefit to this type of ride.
