Star Tours II - Ride reviews

My Review

It took me 11 rides to get to see all the scenes and people.

If my favorite pieces were put together it would be:
Darth, Hoth, Yoda, Naboo

Naboo is interesting to me.. it is sooooo much better than the other endings, that I wonder what happen to the other endings. Was the Naboo team paid extra?

If you have never seen the Naboo ending, keep riding, its soooo worth it.

May the force be with you!

I rode the attraction 3 times yesterday and came away disappointed. I thought that the storyline was not well fleshed out, and main plot point borrowed greatly from Star Trek the experience in Vegas(only not done as well). The lack of solid preshow and engaging story was shocking(fine for 1990, not for 2011).

Random thoughts:

-The Vader opening is way cooler than the storm trooper equivalent. I understand the need for variety, but not when one option is so inferior.

-I feel that Admiral Ackbar should be cut as a holograph since he is always the greeter at the end of the attraction. There is no reason to cut Yoda or Leia entirely from the attraction so that a lesser known character can have two scenes(especially since he says exactly the same line as Yoda).

-The Boba Fett storyline seemed thrown together and climax was underwhelming. A random theme park guest would have know idea who this character was without proper build up.

-I love C3PO, but Rex was a much more engaging pilot, IMHO(he actually turned around to speak to you).

-3D effects were good, but really needed a larger screen and in ride effects to make it work. I actually found the ride dull.

As a Star Wars fan, I came away disappointed. It could have been much better.

It just shows you how opinions can differ and that is the tricky thing with multiple ride experiences.
That being said I am not saying your opinions are not valid(since a lot of message boards can turn into that) but I am saying I was completely the opposite in opinion except for two points you made.

Rex was better as a more engading pilot. I used to love how he was a droid that you could tell was programed for such a thing as flight since his head could just turn around and talk to passengers. I loved the part in the original Star Tours when he would say "..There would be some turbulance up ahead please make sure those seat belts are fastened." It was those kinds of touches that made it feel live.

The other point I agree with is the simulations could of had a little bit more simulation. It did not seem to move as much as the original and they definitely switched to a different kind of hydrolic system. (you can even smell the difference)

Otherwise I completely disagree. I like the storm trooper opening better because you have the rebel spy actually on screen vs the small screen on side which many people overlook, and I love the depth added by having the imperial droid attached and then stuck to the glass.

Sorry you came off disappointed.

What are your thoughts on Double Ackbar instead of Yoda or Leia? Also what about the tacked on Boba Fett storyline?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Sorry, I did not share those because I did not expect anyone to care that much. Thanks for being interested in my opinions! :-D

I thought those were indifferent really. I mean for the Star Wars fans Boba Fett trying to destroy us is amazing, to others he is just another bad guy Vader has to get us. We know he is not our friend pretty quickly. "Not so fast" and it is after we are on our mission which they know about.

The double Admiral Ackbar did not bother me, since it would only make sense to have the guy who hid the recorded message transmission into R2 ahead of time would be the one expecting you by the end. So that is another indifferent to me as it makes sense to the storyline.

*QUESTION THAT CONTAINS SPOILER*

At the end of the Naboo scene when the pit droid crashes through the front of the ship, is that simply a 3d effect or is there an actual broken screen effect perhaps similar to what was used in Alien Encounter? I realize this might be a stupid question but simply judging by the video its an extremely convincing looking effect which had me curious. Thanks

It is just a quick change of 3D. All graphics. It is a pretty good one. It is funny you mention that as I was just thinking the other day if they would of went with an Alien Encounter practical method somehow...it would of been REALLY cool, but difficult to smoothly pull off.

wow...

:hammer:I think some people are TOO hard to impress. I got to ride it 4 times last week and the idea that each ride was different, even though it's obviously in segments, was Awesome! I ended up in Naboo 3 out of 4 times and still had a different experience each time. How many rides can do that?
The visuals were great in 3-D, I don't think watching them on a computer screen can do them justice. I love when you catch the Wookie!
And whatever the new "degree of movement" is on the simulators, it really added to the feel, like when Vader pulls the ship or when you were hitting the ground during the race.
The only segment I didn't get to see was the Boba Fett chase, I really was hoping for that one!
I loved the old ride but think this revamp was really well done, even WITH Jar Jar.:sohappy:

Agreed fully. Actually it is quite funny that I thought the gungan section would be my least favorite. Underwater and what could happen did not seem all that exciting, but anyone who has ridden it knows from then on out that ending is just purely awesome. It ended up being my favorite section of any ride I got.

I find the Storm Trooper and Imperial droid intro much better and still more impresive than vader's still but you are right, being controlled by The Force was a clever thing.

This is all I needed to know. Can't wait to ride it. :D

I just got back from Disney yesterday, and I was there from May 20th- May 30th. When at Hollywood Studios (May 25th), the park was ridiculously busy! I thought that since it was Star Wars Weekends, along with the opening of the ride - the wait time for the ride would be long and that fastpass would be for later on at night. BUT as I walked through the park, R&R was broken down - ToT was an 60 minute wait (not too bad) and then Toy Story Mania was a 90 minute wait. I thought again ok there is no chance im getting on Star Wars ... when I walked by it... it was a 30 minute wait and fastpass was available for only 2 hours ahead ... I went on it.. and was disappointed... I was not into it at all. Ya the 3D is cool, but I liked the old one better. Later on at night, my cousin and aunt met us at the park and wanted to do the ride - by this point (8:00pm) the ride was a 5 minute wait. Only this time around on the ride - we got an awesome one! It was so much fun and completely different than the first.

Only concern I have - is that if you are in line waiting a long time and get one that you dont like that sucks! But if you get one you enjoy then ur lucky! Overall im on the fence - there are things i like about the old Star Tours ... and things I like about the new 3D one.

I highly suggest the Fast Pass during Star Wars weekends! My 7-year old had a blast on the new Star Tours. That's was the biggest thing for me. We got a gun down some Tie Fighters, Pod Race, blast some droid fighters, fall through the city, and skid on a landing platform combo. I thought it was pretty cool, though very short. I remember the old version of the ride being longer. The 3-D a was great upgrade! I still think Space Mountain is WDW best ride! LOL

It's actually "to the second" the same length as the old ride :)

Even though its the exact same length, it actually feels a bit longer to me, probably because so much more happens, and the sequences are so fast paced.
