So what was all their NOLA research for,, does it matter or not? πŸ₯²πŸ˜§πŸ₯΄ I mean I don't actually care if it does or not (and I am not saying it should or should not be in Frontierland, like I don't care), but I cannot keep up with the mental gymnastics here.

It seems their research into β€œhigh elevation in/near Louisana” led them to Avery Island. Given that location’s sad and regretful history with slavery and indentured servants, I hope they found inspiration elsewhere and the β€œsalt mines” don’t make their way into the ride.

I mean "the Disneyland version" has become a disparaging comparison, so I was hoping that they would actually do a good job. I do have a lot of confidence in their team. NOLA deserves it. Louisiana deserves it.

I do wish they would have named their academic sources, though

Mental gymnastics on whose part? I for one have made it very clear that I don’t find the emphasis they’re placing on research either necessary or compelling. The salt mine stuff in particular was just weird.

I think like a fair amount of Disney projects, the research trips will be found in the design / art direction. They’ll just try and make it look and feel authentic. And that will be about it.

To prove themselves in a lie when they said the announcement when accused of having to do with climate that they insinuated that this has been planned for years and in reality, the R and D was clearly pretty early on for a ride already established that is going to be rethemed.

I honestly hope you’re right and the same amount of research that Joe Rhode & his team did going to Tibet and surrounding areas for EE is going into Tiana…if that happens, I will truly be impressed.

yeah, seems like a lot of the video from those trips has them talking to people from the area, working with artists from the area .... I think much more about the look, feel, style, spirit, etc. than about geography

The NOLA 'research' needs to be taken in context.

They're not making a documentary. It's still a fantasy story and setting. This is the NOLA that is not a place on a map, but a state of mind that exists wherever people dream and wonder and imagine, a place where illusion and reality are fused by technological magic. We welcome you to a Hollywood NOLA that never wasβ€”and always will be.

So, I can guarantee that some liberties will be taken and there needs to be some suspension of belief. Normally, people don't turn into frogs. Similar to not being concerned that a bear and a fox are arguing over the many ways they can tortuously kill a rabbit.

OTOH, they don't want to make stupid mistakes like having clothing, music, or references that were from a different period. We all know there are some folks, perhaps a few on this forum, who are just waiting to be hypercritical of anything that isn't period-perfect. Disney doesn't want to hear, "This is all wrong! That talking alligator's hat is from the 40's not the 20's!!!1!1!"

I am not that much of a costume stickler (I am certainly not anywhere near as CosTube), but, to be fair, I would kind of be annoyed if the alligator's hat was from the 40's and not the 20's because that is just plain laziness (LOL). Especially since the Internet is so readily available.

I think fidelity to eras is overrated, TBH. Just look at "The Sting." Set in mid 1930's, its soundtrack uses turn of the century ragtime. tunes - AND IT'S PERFECT AND ICONIC.

Many people from the 1930's would have still listened to Ragtime, because it was the music they grew up with.

edit: also, like what is the point of setting something in a certain time period if you're not even going to use touchstones for that time period πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚

Tiny ray of good news in the midst of saying farewell to Splash Mtn. : Several videos on YouTube showing the superior version of Tokyo Splash Mountain. Since they're not owned by Disney, they don't plan on converting their attraction anytime soon!

It does not seem like the versions that are actually going to change are going to do so any time soon at the current rate either!
