Space Mountain refurbishment begins April 19 2009

Would this partial track replacement be the addition of banked turns?

Holy smokes! I rode the ride for the first time in 6 years last month, and there was something unsettling about the ride (besides the girders in the dark that seemed to threaten to decapitate me) that I simply could not put in words! And it was the lack of banked turns! That is why my neck hurt!

I have doubts that anything major like that will be added during the refurb. Somehow 5 months only seems long enough for cleaning, recalibration, basic maintenance stuff.

I'm keeping my expectations low. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised!

I still don't know where some of you are getting your short refurb timeframes from...even the info Steve gave us said LATE 2009. American Idol was supposed to open in LATE 2008 and that turned into Feb of 2009. Kim Possible was supposed to be completely up and running by year end 2008 but it's not QUITE completely open to full capacity yet (atleast I haven't heard anything). April until late 2009 is 8 months at the least...we've already gotten some sites saying atleast 10 months.

Everybody needs to get off that pessimism band wagon that has been rolling through these forums over the past couple weeks!

Total closure was a bit more than 2 years. Actual work was about 20 months, if I recall correctly.

Total track replacement? Last I heard, no. Partial would be more likely.

But DL's SM was suddenly taken out of service before it killed someone and there was no planning for the refurb.

One would hope that with the WDW SM being planned for the past few years that they would have cars, track structiural steel already built and ready to go. Unfortunately I have no faith that this has happened. A little spit and polish, weld cracks in the track, add sound and dust the post show a little. That should be enough work for 8 - 10 months.:hammer:

It's because people hear what they want to hear. They expect "Walmarting" because we have gotten it so much recently. As soon as 1 person mentioned they expected it to last 6 months or less everyone had to jumped on the bandwagon. It's sad how pessimistic we have become. :brick:

Unless something has changed since the last info I got, 10 months is the minimum. I see it going a year, easy.

It`s a maybe. Again.
Ha! I love that.
Over the past year or so I've heard from various sources:
For sure.
then
No doubt.
then
Don't know.
then
No chance.
then
Possible.
then
Unlikely.
now...
Maybe.

 Seriously, nothing about this refurb has remained constant...

It's about time.. But 5 months? isn't that a little on the short side for a coaster? I always thought the rehab of Space Mountain was to be a complete overhaul of the attraction, much like the Paris or Anaheim version. Does anyone else have any thoughts?

We were on it a few years ago when it stopped. They turned the lights on and we had to walk out after CM's manually rolled the cars to the next straightaway. It seemed so much safer and more secure in the dark....

I'm actually against the on ride audio. Just one more thing to break later down the line. Then we'll have a SM Effects Watch thread. :)

Fix the light issues (as much as they can be), new cars and a little new track would be awesome.

Onboard Audio is pioneered enough that there's no sense in NOT doing it, RNR and Space Mountain at Disneyland haven't had any major downtimes in the audio department. It's just a matter of pulling out the car, and having the Fonz hit it.

Aayyyy!
