What this will do is make it so 2 theaters are "more or less" dedicated to Fastpass, but there's no reason for them to arrange the line in a way that this has to be adhered to all the time. Fastpass distribution is typically 65-70% of capacity. If the merge point allows you to send guests to one of 3 theaters, there's no real reason to reconfigure the line when it's not needed.

Conversely, the queue for Toy Story Mania very well may have to be reconfigured as a result of the 3rd track. That explains why they may have been doing the Fastpass+ only test to see when they sent out empty cars.
All correct. We build to be as flexible to operations as possible, knowing they will change as they need to regardless of what is intended. It's not set in stone that a third theater would be walk-up vs. the others be FP+, they'll use them as they need to.
Ride system layout looks the same as at present.
Essentially the same, yes.
It's Disney World. Sometime this decade maybe.

I'd wager early 2017.
I'd wager a bit sooner. :) Not much, but a bit.

Probably discussed before...Does the third theatre start operations with the new movie? Or will we see one theatre go down for the change beforehand, and then the refurbed and new third both open up together w/ new movie while the last old theatre gets the change?

I believe so. Information was sketchy but part of the storyline included the extinction. It's unclear if this would be apart of a progression in the diorama or on screen. From what I can tell the 1982 infrastructure would have been reused.
Diorama would have been kept but updated to current AA's and current A/V fx. The cars also kept, with new shells. New infrastructure throughout. New media. Would have kept the spirit of the attraction, while bringing it up to date. Still could be done in the future, too.

i wonder why they didnt opt to build a 4th theatre... if you are taking on a huge project, it would have made sense. I am sure there is enough demand for 4 theatres.
Cost benefit. Any new attraction or addition is run through a multitude of numbers people while being budgeted. They have a formula that will tell them whether it's worth it to build a third or fourth theater vs. the money spent to build/staff it, in addition to the normal considerations of physical space, etc.

Just to give you a point of reference for what audiences disembarking Soarin' in Anaheim are used to seeing daily....

If there any chance they show multiple films at the same time? It seems like park management would like it, as they could turn the infrastructure into two attractions instead of one. With our queue themed to an airport, it really makes sense that there would be multiple destination options. It would be sad to see the current film/music completely retired; I think they'll have a hard time topping it.

Not sure if you're talking about operations managers or execs. Having multiple films wouldn't increase capacity, nor would it really allow them to market it as two separate attractions. That said, I have no clue what's actually happening so my best guess could be completely off the mark.

If they convert to Soarin over the World I think they should have multiple films. The current version does an amazing job of covering CA in 4+ minutes but i don't see how they could cover the whole world effectively. Hopefully we don't end up with the Test Track 2.0 issue - theme fits in better with Epcot but the new ride is less fun.

They have the technology - Star Tours has multiple films and names it more fun to see what you will get that ride.

Our version is just called Soarin'. It doesn't need to cover the whole world. You are just "Soarin'" somewhere.

I would argue that the pre-show/car building for Test Track 2.0 is an excellent change, however the new ride feels a bit sterile to me. I think they could go a long way be changing the on board narration.
